One small but very important detail was left out in the information box. India needed 70 odd runs to avoid innings defeat, and were 25 for 5 when Kapil paji walked in. Soon it became 31 for 6. Kapil's 129 helped India post a respectable lead of 150 runs for SA to get in the 4th inning. India lost, but it was at least a graceful defeat instead of being all out under 70.

Not many people know that Kapil was the
1st man to take not only 200 but also 250 wickets in ODIs. From 1988 to 1994, he was the world's leading wicket taker in ODIs, ahead of Botham, Imran, Hadlee, Marshall etc.
Kapil is the only captain to take 9 wickets in an innings.
Only man to claim 400 wickets and score 5000 runs, also only man to claim 400 wickets and 4000 runs in Tests.
(Though Sobers is said to be the greatest all rounder, he managed only 235 wickets in 93 tests at a horrible strike rate of 87 and a very poor avg of 34, Sobers has no 10 wicket hauls and only 6 five wicket hauls.
If you think Kallis was the best, then he has only 292 wickets in a whopping 166 tests at a very poor strike rate of 69 and a poor avg of 32, also he has no 10 wicket hauls and only 5 five wicket hauls)
World record 184 innings without getting run out.
He is the 1st man to hit 4 consecutive 6s in tests. (Now equalled by Afridi and De Villiers but not broken).
He is still in the list of top 11 wicket takers in tests.
Strike rate of 94 in tests, higher than Richards and Sehwag, 95 in ODI, higher than Richards.
Still youngest to 100 wickets and 1000 runs, 200 wickets and 2000 runs, 300 wickets and 3000 runs.
He is still the youngest man to take 300 Test wickets.
He is still the youngest captain to win a World Cup.
At the time of his retirement, he was the world's leading wicket taker in tests, and remained so for six years, until Walsh broke it in 2000.
Scored 500 runs and took 50 wickets in the same year twice (Pollock and Botham have also achieved this feat)
Has been holding the world record for the fastest 50 at Lord's in a Test Match off just 35 balls for 40 years now. (1982)
      INDIA Records:
Fastest century by an Indian in Tests in 74 balls. (Later equalled by Azhar but not broken).
2nd Fastest 50 by an Indian in tests in 30 balls. (Pant now fastest in 29 balls, record broken by just one ball)
2nd fastest to reach 100 wickets in 25 tests (Bumrah is now fastest in 24 tests, record broken by just one test)
Second fastest 50 by an Indian in ODI in 22 balls (Fastest by Agarkar in 21 balls, record broken by just one ball)
First Indian player to score an ODI century
First Indian bowler to take 5 wickets in ODIs
He is the 1st Indian to complete his maiden test century with a six. (Harbhajan is the only other Indian to do so)
(Myth: Kapil never bowled a no ball: This is wrong, he did bowl no balls.

He was ahead of his time for batting. Look at some of the drives and pulls against high-quality bowling on a testing pitch. In this innings, his first 50 came in 95 deliverables. Obviously, he had to curb his natural instinct as India was struggling and then started the onslaught. Had he followed this mode for his other innings, he could have easily scored 7000+ runs in Test. I think India didn't have a good batting coach during that time, who could help Kapil improve his batting temperament or a little bit on defensive technique.

No bro Kapil Dev was after all a human man, throughout his career he was the only worthwhile fast bowler in the Indian side. He had to managed 2 departments and he did a fabulous job in one and a damn good one in the other, balling and batting respectively. Imran Khan had Akram, Younis & Sarfaraz, Gary Sobers had Wes Hall, Griffith, Gilchrist; Kallis had Steyn, Pollock, Ntini. Kapil Dev had no one he was a one man army.

In this video, Kapil himself says that he had bowled no balls. czcams.com/video/Otolhum-xzA/video.html)

Kapildevji is a LEGEND. A gentle stern HERO..No can can match him in character, sportsmanship, discipline, ethics, spirit and what not. If there is anything more than Bharat Ratna, he is the only one to deserve. His seriousness is contagious to serious people. The same guy who made 5 out of 65 and someone in the commentary box who loves more dot balls makes the irony for this situation. Yet RS has also displayed aggressive innings many a times. Need to appreciate. But could have avoided such slow batting, at least 1 run in 3 balls could have changed the game away....Kapilji proved on so many occasions...175 not out in 1983, four sixes to avoid follow on with one wicket remaining, this 129, and many more...He is undeniably THE LEGEND...GENTLEMAN OF SPORTS...INDIA WILL NEVER GET A MAN LIKE HIM...WHAT AN ALL ROUNDER....! For many of us (64years plus) who grew up following Indian cricket our team wasn't in top 5 and Pakistan was above us.But the Indian team had some players who were truly world-class and their exploits made us happy. Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev,Mohd Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender sehwag were some who put fear in opponent eyes. I exclude post 2008 to current players. They are the jewels of Indian cricket. If I had to choose one who made most impact for Indian cricket it has to be Kapil Dev.
