  • Despite retiring hurt overnight on 39 after a nasty knock on the arm, Sunil Gavaskar returned to the crease, smashing the Aussie attack all over the Adelaide Oval. He went on to post his 9,000th Test run on his way to 166 not out during the First Test of the 1985-1986 series.

No disrespect to Sachin or VK, but SRT always had Dravid/Lawman to company, VK has Rohit/Pujara/Pant, but this man, Gavaskar was lone warrior of that batting line up.

The Greatest Batsman of all time!!! An Opening batsman to garner so many runs in a test cricket era where the emphasis was on lasting for days and not slogging every ball, Master of technique (see the way his feet move, always in line of the ball, playing spinning balls on back foot) against the fastest and fiercest bowlers of cricketing history in their opening fresh spells. Against todays bowlers, fast out fields, helmets and powerful bats, Gavaskar would take every bowler to the cleaners and it would be very difficult to get him out. I see how today on turning pitches our best of batsmen cannot last for half a day, I have seen this man bat for days on extremely difficult spinning wickets on which no one lasted, no wonder the opponents loved and respected him hugely. He single handedly laid the foundation on which walked Tendulkar, Virat and Rohit Sharma.

      Don't just see statistics In
That era lndia didn't know how to play One day cricket
India was a bachha and kacha team then
But. remember India got respect in Test cricket from Australia West Indies Newzealand England and Wales Pakistan only after the arrival of the Little giant Sunil Gavaskar
Before him India' was never taken seriously in world cricket

India should have won this series, they needed 70 or 80 runs when rain came, only it was Australian umpires who saved them and no play was resumed after tea. Well before neutral umpires and ICC. Also, in my view GAVASKAR defense was even better then Sachin. Forget about the new age batsman. His last innings in test a 90 against Pakistan was gem even though we lost that game.
