    ----------
History was made in the game, as India’s Chetan Sharma dismissed Ken Rutherford, Ian Smith and Ewen Chatfield in consecutive balls to claim the first hat trick in World Cup history.
Chasing a target of 222, India’s openers Kris Srikkanth (75 off 58 balls) and Gavaskar (103* from 88) were in imperious form as they helped India reach 224 in just 32.1 overs for the fall of one wicket.
We have also published the India vs Zimbabwe 1987 World Cup Highlights where Kapil Dev once again torments and destroys the Zimbabweans single handedly in a dejavu of Kapil's heroics against the same opposition in the 1983 edition of the World Cup

I was in Class VI when Cricket World Cup 1987 was played. I have sweet memories of this match, which was played on 31-Oct-'87. I had the privilege of watching Chetan Sharma's hat-trick and Gavskar/ Srikant's blitzkrieg live on TV. What a wonderful match it was. I remember it even now after more than 3 decades. Sunil Gavaskar, in his last test innings against Pakistan in Bangalore, and in his second last ODI here in Nagpur, showed that he was a true master, a genius, who changed his batting style at will for both tests and ODIs, and remained champion till the end. When he retired, everyone asked 'Why?' even though he was 38-and-half at that time! A supremely fit player, Sunil also held a record of playing most successive test matches (106).

Gavaskar found it very difficult to adjust his game in one day cricket. From 1975to 1985 he was never convinced about one day cricket. Similar to vvs laxman , rahul dravid. But from 1985 he changed . His scoring rate increased . 1985 1986 and 1987 sunil gavaskar proved that he can be an all format player . I was in 11th standard during this world cup. My cousin younus rushnaiwala was a ranji player and had good connections with indian team players. When indian team was in ahmedabad cricket team was invited to his bunglow in paldi area of ahmedabad and i had privilege to meet and take autographs of manoj prabhakar, kiran more, dilip vengsarkar ( captain) and mohammed azharuddin . They were very down to earth . Not like todays oversmart players .

So, his early departure in the semi wouldn't have made that adverse effect on our team if the other players could have performed well. Had we won the semi because of the efforts of any two or three of Srikkant, Sidhu, Azhar, Vengy, Kapil, Sastry, Chetan, Binny and More, we would have surely entered into the final. If not willing to play at Kolkatta, Sunny could have opted himself out of the final squad. So, your allegations are simply illogical and biased.

Watched it in school days and was delighted 1st to see a Hattrick by Chetan Sharma (all bowled) and then brillian attacking batting by both openers Srikant and Gavaskar. I guess this was the first time Gavaskar played such aggressive batting. Played a lot of lofted shots right from the first ball making his intentions clear. He was very well known to play classic cricket shots like straight drive cover drive square cuts hooks flicks off the pads, but here he just played the most attacking slog shots over midwicket. Maybe he was trying to prove a point to someone in the dressing room as he clapped a few times cheering himself after hitting fours and sixes.

I was in 10th grade. This was the day I got introduced to cricket & first cricket match I watched on TV at a home in a neighbouring street. At that time, I did not know anything about cricket rules, seniors around were clapping for boundaries, I did not know what it meant, I did not know the difference between 4 and 6, they explained for a sixer ball should cross the boundary in air, for a four along the ground. I still remember i misunderstood one bounce four as six because it crossed the boundary in air. Second cricket match i watched on TV was SF against England from another home in another neighbouring street, which India lost, I think Graham Gooch scored a century in that match. I remember Openers fell cheaply , Maninder singh & Kapil dev was last hope for some miracle but ultimately India lost the SF match. After this, I got crazy and started playing street cricket, and it impacted my 10 the exam results. I still remember those days, I used to go to watch the seniors plyaing cricket in a big temple campus in the pretext going for studying for 10th grade exams.

Gavaskar was bullied for his 60 over 36 runs against East Africa in 1975. Will they eat their words if they are around still?🤔

matches played in the early 80s, in Aus had superior video quality when compared to 1987 WC in india. but India has improved and 96 had better quality video and audio footage. after 2000, it matched the aus or eng standard in video quality, shows the tremendous increase in tech in the indian subcontinent as the years progressed.

Wonder why there is no youtube link for the first round-robin match between India and New Zealand in the 1987 world cup. India won the match by 16 runs. It was played in Bangalore. Kapil Dev was the MOM for a brilliant 75 of 71 deliveries.

Gavaskar even wrote a column in The Hindu right before this match. He was accused of slow run rate in the previous match and he basically wrote 'wait and watch' this time. He was running 103F fever that day. His concentration and determination is unmatched.

What a match this was India Vs New Zealand. Great Stadium and it’s almost full with crowd. Cricket upto now has become too fast before 210 was a defiantly a winning score and now 400 in ODI is chaseable.
