  • This was a very technical rescue of a horse which became stuck in a river. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, Rescue-9, was called to long line the horse to safety. This is a different operation than our usual hoisting of people and requires a great deal of technical expertise from organizations such as: Riverside City Fire’s tech rescue/HART team, CalFire, Norco Animal Rescue, and Sheriff’s patrol/Norco Station.
The horse was heavily sedated for the flight for his safety. Conquistador is his name and he is doing great!

Great rescue, great training in an odd situation. More live experience never hurts.

Awesome. Amazing work. Saw you guys on FlightRadar today for something in the mountains between Mecca and the 10. Got the alert when taking off from Hemet and going to Palm Springs. And my name is Jason too lol.

One reason for the horse to wear a 'helmet', besides to protect the horse from injury, is to blind him; horses panic much less when their eyes are covered. Thats why you see people using towels and shirts to move frightened horses.

I thought they misspelled hoist rescue in the title…. And I was wrong 😂 They really mean a horse.

So many questions. Do they have a horse-helicopter-harness in every rescue team/bird? Why is the horse there? Why is the horse wearing a helmet? How did they catch the horse? How did the people get there initially?

The horse bucked off his rider the day before and ran off. A neighbor saw the horse stuck in the mud on the river bank nearby and posted a pic on FB. The horse owner recognized it as his and called 911. We don't carry that large horse sling, the Riverside City Fire Dept has that device and they are very good at setting it up. We train with them annually to long line horses like this. The horse has a helmet, well, to protect their head. The initial team of firefighters from CalFire had to set up a swift water rescue boat/pully system to get to him. Thanks for watching!

...And there is the first guy. Never fails. Just 46 minutes into it! We love to save animals just as much as people. When we lose that, we become savages.

It was also someone’s personal horse. If your dog was in a burning house you’d want firefighters to go in and save it right or is it just a dog?

Who cares? It also counts as training. Instead of just randomly flying around and doing hoist operations for training scenarios, at least they get to use it, which is better than training.
