    Just installed this dual camera setup following your video. Worked a charm. The circular plastic clips on the rear fabric were a pain to remove. For pulling wire, I used hand soap as lubricant and that worked well. Found a different video that explained how to remove and reinstall the a pillar.

    After I hardwired my dashcam like you did, my 12-volt battery died due to the parasitic drain from the dash cam's parking monitor feature. So I set it to turn off immediately when the car is shut off, but it still managed to die again somehow. And now my local dealership refuses to even diagnose the problem citing aftermarket add-ons, they said i'll have to uninstall the hardwired dashcam before they'd diagnose the problem. This is exactly why i hate dealing with stealerships!

    • @EVDude
      @EVDude  Před 3 lety +3

      I'm sorry to hear you had issues with your battery. Did you verify the charge of your 12V battery? If you got the same hardwire kit you should have a cutoff voltage so the battery doesn't drain. If the dealer doesn't own up to it, simply disconnect the 2 fuse taps and that's it as those are the only two connections to the car. Let me know how things go.

    Thanks for the video! It gave me the confidence to install my own system. I had the most difficulty with getting through the rubber conduit at 18:10 so I wanted to share with others my method. On my car it was taped tightly at the entrances around the cables, so I had to carefully remove the electrical tape to access the conduit. I then popped the rubber gaskets out so it was all free hanging. I was afraid to use Vaseline since other commenters said it would erode the other cables’ insulation. So without lubricant, I easily pushed and twisted a no. 2 pencil (eraser first) through the conduit carefully to avoid damage. Next, I drilled a hole through the end of the pencil and threaded in some picture-hanging wire. I pulled the pencil back the way it came from, and was ready to use the picture wire as a pull string. I wrapped the wire around the camera cable evenly to spread out pressure and avoid damage to the cable head. Then I used electrical tape to wrap the two wires together, tapering them on the leading side so they could get through the pipe more easily. I was very careful not to pull too hard and damage the existing wires in the pipe. It went best when I alternated pulling with kneading the rubber at the sticking points.
    Thanks again, from your neighbor in Vermont 👍

      I finished the VIOFO A129 duo installation an hour ago on a 2017 RAV 4 hybrid. I ran the rear camera wire on the top edge of the airbag cover because it did not appear that the wire would interfere with the airbag deployment and it seemed both an easier and safer process. Getting the rear camera wire through the rubber boot connecting the hatchback door was somewhat arduous, but using some Vaseline and additional help from my wife with a hemostat to widen the boot got the wire through. Both cameras are working nicely. Thanks again.

    Great video - but I have a question: With the VIOFO HK3 hardwire kit set to cutoff at 12.4V (I believe that's the setting you indicated you are using in the video) do you have any idea approximately how many hours the camera runs in parking mode before the Hk3 shuts off? I've seen conflicting reports in other forums that the runtime may only be a few hours.

    • @EVDude
      @EVDude  Před 2 lety +1

      I haven't tested it with the vehicle parked for days but I know it does at least 8 hours as that's the time it's parked when at work. You'll get conflicting reports because everyone's batteries are not at the same level to begin with. So if you're battery is healthy to begin with (over 12.6-12.8 V) you'll be good for hours or even days.

    • @terraskater
      @terraskater Před 2 lety +2

      @@EVDude The VIOFO dual draws about 1A at 5V from the included 12V USB adapter in dashcam mode, so that’s approximately 1A x 5V = 5 watts. Assuming some efficiency loss that would be about 0.5A on the input side of that same adapter. Assuming the HK3 operates with a similar efficiency and that parking mode draws the same (or perhaps less?) power, that’s a steady 0.5A drain on a 55Ah battery (according to page 542 of the owner’s manual). So that works out to a theoretical 110 hours of parking mode runtime - to completely drain the battery. Unfortunately that doesn’t do much to answer the question - How much runtime can we expect before the voltage drops to 12.4V? So I guess I’ll just have to test it! :-)

      All 4K dash cams have overheating issues. Because writing more data to Sdcard. Avoid 4K cameras until someone figures out how to solve this with better technology. I chose Viofo A129 Plus Duo for this very reason. Front camera is 2K, rear is 1080p. Less data to write. And the 4K resolution in reality is not significantly better than 2K for reading license plates in motion.

      Possible incorrect installation. Please read up and go back over it. (I almost made the same mistake). Fuses used in the fuse tap should be 10amps or under. You are using 15 & 20 which is too hot. It could burn up the dashcam and the car.
      Secondly...the second fuse (the lower amp fuse going to the cam) should be 5, 3 or 2. It should be as low as possible...as the dash cam uses less than 1 amp. The excess juice could damage the cam.
      But definitely recheck your fuse tap setup. Read the maximum amp rating for the tap. It's usually rated for fuses no higher than 10amps. You could do 10 & a 3 or 5. 7.5 & a 3. Or 5 & a 3.

I was going to have it installed but I'm worried that if something happens later on (even it doesn't have anything to do with the dash camera) that the dealer is going to say that the warranty is void because of it.
