A few comments which you may or may not find useful: 1) When you clink your glasses you can say "Yámas" 2) It's typical for Greek people to share an order of different dishes instead of having a "main dish" each. This way you can try different flavors and avoid the "fatigue" that comes from eating just a plate of fried calamari. 3) Some restaurants, (especially seafood-restaurants) may give you a free dessert or fruit but unless they're super generous, you'd probably have to place a larger order for them to do so. 4) Ouzeri means a tavern that serves Ouzo, a Greek spirit similar to Sambuca which pairs seafood or fish. Usually dilluted with ice and water and sipped veeery slowly through the meal. 5) Often with seafood restaurants you are paying more for the location than the quality of food. If you're in a tight budget try to avoid the harbour and look more inland for better prices. 6) Fresh Fish can be quite expensive, especially big fish. Something you could try would be to ask if a restaurant could grill a fish for you (You could say you fished it out yourself). They would ask for a cooking charge and you may need to buy some salad or something to accompany it but you'd save quite a lot of money overall. You could buy the fish directly from a fishing boat or the fish market (ask that they don't clean it for authenticity). 7) You can get even cheaper coffees if you request the "fixed price" coffee. These are prices set by the government to avoid overcharging of certain products. It applies in "public spaces" coffee shops such as in airports, hospitals, train or bus stations etc. The "fixed price" coffee is a single regular coffee or frappè but for only 1 or 1.5 euro instead of the 2 - 2.5 euro which you paid. But you have to be very clear when you ask for it or they'll serve you the expensive version. The greek word for it is "diatìmisi". 8) There is also a "diatìmisi" sandwich. The standard ham and cheese toasted sandwich. Again you have to be very clear what you ask for. The price is 1.45 euro. If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

On the other hand there is Italy, France and worst the UK. You can get cheap breakfast, but if you don't want to spend too much money on lunch, you have to eat burger, pizza and kebap the whole time..
I couldn't agree more! you can get fantastic big meals for very little in all those areas. I loved big potato dumplings stuffed with meat in Lithuania! I got really lucky in Florence Italy in finding out that you can often get amazing food from big restaurants by using a special "take away" hidden entrance at a reduced price... I paid 3 euros for ravioli or other pasta dishes which were absolutely spectacular (selling for 10-14 euros in the restaurant on the other side of the kitchen).
I think that you had choose the wrong places .You can find almost at every corner coffee for 1 euro, and to eat at the lion square is like to eat at the Eiffel tower in france
Ego Eimai totally agree. Center of Heraklion is expensive, if he would walk a bit further away, he could get everything (like pita gyros or sandwiches with coffee) for approximately 5€
Usually you have a general idea of the prices of a restaurant from the salads. 7 euros for a salad is quite expensive. Normally in Crete you get a Greek salad from 4,50-6€

Cred ca daca as face sacrificii enorme cum ar fi pierderea apartamentului ca sa ajung si eu o data in Creta oricum m-as uita in gura altora pentru ca preturi ca 10, 16 euro pentru o portie de mancare, dar noi suntem trei persoane adulte!!! Asa ca nu-mi ramane decat sa ma uit in gura altora pe youtube!
I was there in the off-seasons and it was inexpensive. not sure how expensive it would be during peak tourist season. but, as you can see, I had a wonderful time there

I noticed locals in Greece pronouncing the food gyro with a guttural "G" like "hkg-eer-oh" more like "hero" but with a guttural "h" sound. in the USA sometimes it is pronounced "gear-oh" or "euro" like the money. seems to depend on where you are on how it is pronounced.
A well-meaning fellow, but hopelessly white. Every Greek-American had to be laughing at his description of loukoumades as 'doughnut holes'. And he was lost for the proper toast when downing his raki.
specialparadise Hey, sp, I don't think I was too hard on him. On the contrary, I appreciate the enthusiasm. But 'doughnut holes'? My yiayia was tossing. A good guide book would have shown you a picture labeled 'loukoumades'. On a different subject entirely, two great related books (obviously, there are many more, and I mean besides 'Zorba', whose lignite mine is set on the south coast of Kriti): Henry Miller's 'The Colossus of Maroussi' and Lawrence Durrell's 'The Greek Islands'. Eat, drink, sleep. Make friends when the tourists have gone. Gather round the somba and roast chestnuts.
