I am Greek and I just retired a couple of years ago. the plan has always been to live 6 months in the US and 6 months in Greece. We lin Northen VA now but moving to Sarasota FL in a couple of months.
to give you an idea of the cost of living and the lifestyle well it is night and day. We own an apartment here and own our own home just outside of Athens in a beautiful area called Lagonissi. I have carefully calculated the house maintenance expenses and for twice the sq feet we pay about 20% less in Greece. Everything else, food, internet, cable, going out to dinner, day trips etc our budget when we are in Greece drops from 8K per month to about 4K per month. The only thing that is more expensive in Greece ( a lot more expensive I should say) is the gas. But the distances are must shorter that you drive and if I have to go to Athens I take the bus which is so cheap. so the cost of living between Northen VA USA and Athens Greece I put it to about 50% less.
The cost of living in Greece is high if your payroll is coming from Greece, where on average most people make about 800 eur. The center is ok, but to condensed to live long term, with hectic traffic and blocked streets allot of the time. But athens has very nice suburbs the northern parts and the southern parts, with better infastructure, nice buildings open space, green the sea or mountain in preference. Greece is unique as it is upon the safest countries globally, with very low crime rates, and Athens to, for a capital city is very safe, add good weather and the good food, then you have a good quality of life and a first class country, the greeks make allot less of money, but respect of life, and freedom makes for a first class country that is beyond mousaka, souvlaki and sirtaki and the ancient greeks.
Can you live by the sea near athens? And commute in via public transportation?

Thank you for sharing this very informative video about the cost of living in Greece for a month. I have been searching for this kind of video and have been watching some however this is the best I have ever watched. I want to take a break from work for a month and use my annual leave and go to Greece. Thank you for this one. You really did a great job here mentioning and breaking down all the expenses for a month. Awesome!
Athens is such a historical place, I would love to say that I live there for a month ! Good job guys
It seems like you guys did really well on food costs! I would have thought it would be more expensive. Love these cost breakdown videos!
Love your content! So informational :)
We really learn a lot from you guys! 😊 Athens!!! Beautiful place! Wish We could also visit one day!😄
Truth is if you didnt Airbnb you could easily find a house for 300€.
Not for something short term. Short term leases are higher priced.
No.
Hey guys 😄 we find these cost of living vlogs super interesting, its a great insight into what living overseas costs. Especially since living in one city for a month at a time is something we want to do in the near future. Actually pretty surprising, thought Greece would be A LOT more expensive!
Good informative video.
We’re Aussies , we spend 5 months a year in our own home on a Greek island.
The bit that really sucks , is the Aussie exchange rate makes it difficult.
I remember the days of the Drachma .. now that was cheap!
But Greece is really beautiful and unique.
Keep up the good work.
That’s what I love about the Mediterranean countries, food and wine is delicious and affordable
Ross and Bek hopefully we meet somewhere to celebrate to that!
That's awesome that you've managed to stay in Athens for so long. Greece is definitely a country that we want to visit too. The accommodation, transportation and food tips were great prepares us for what to expect. Especially the tip about buses being late hahaha. Can't wait to have a Greek tomato!
It's the best time for Greek tomatoes soon! I dont know if Ross and Bek got them in a proper Grocery paper bag(the brown one), but the natural smell of that paper along with the smell of tomatoes when you open the bag, is such a childhood memory for me!!!
Very good video, i'm planing to move to Kos later in 2021 and stay there i live now in switzerland your video makes it very easy to plan for something like this thank you very much , the video is very inforatiev and well edited quality is at the top 👍🏻
Great breakdown on costs, always love it when you include coffee!👍👍👍Didn’t realise tap water in Greece is safe, interesting to know! Thanks both, kind regards, Simon and Elaine😀👍💕
be careful. Water is safe to drink from the tap in Athens. Not all cities have that. In other places, there is too much salt in the tap water so we dont drink it

@@rossandbek2407 I would like to get an apartment in Greece.
The basic salary is about €650 per month here in Greece. So you can understand why the young people leaves Greece and immigrate at other European countries.
That's really reasonable total living cost.
Hahahhahaahaa love the blooper
Thanks for sharing guys
We've never been to Athens.
This gives us idea about the costs if we go there
Come to the Greek side... We have Souvlaki!
Hey, thanks for the exposure. I don't know if you had any local guides helping you, but if you go just a little out of the tourist center of the city, food gets better. Since you like fresh seafood, you should visit some of the seaside villages / small towns that are just an hour by bus or 30 minutes by car from Athens center.
Some info not related to tourism is that it's actually cheaper to own your own house rather than renting one. Houses are more affordable the last few years and the upkeep would be about 250-300 euros per month for a ~60 squared meters apartment built somewhere in the last 20-30 years and maintained well. Compared to other European capitals, this is an extremely good deal.
And also, yes! Tap water is as clean as it gets. Athens is built between four hills that provide fresh water all year round.
@@rossandbek2407 Whenever you come back send a message and I will assist you as much as I can. Me and my wife are also travel nuts and love discussing our trips with like minded people. That's reason enough to help fellow travelers discover as much of Greece as they can.

Hi i want to come to study in Greece and i have some questions i have i can talk with u it will be so helpful
Very interesting watch, Though i dont drink but i know $1 for beer is cheap, thanks for sharing,
The first time I went to Athens & the Islands in 1973. (You can't even imagine the islands then !). I went so many times after that which culminated in my buying a place in 1991, just up from Monastiraki (although central - it's still VERY cheap to buy there !!).. . I really enjoyed your video. When I eat out I would usually have a fish meal which can be E12 - E15, so it's usually E20 by the time I've added a salad & drink on. And, of course, they usually offer you a glass of something, or a cake, as a "thank you" afterwards. . And, by the way.... it's pronounced " taVERna ".
Agree about the bus transportation. They are getting better but on some neighborhoods not so reliable. The food is great in most of the cases!
Ross and Bek thank you for the kind comments.
you are right
What do you recommend for travel insurance?
tav''Erna. Great video. Although I stay in Athens, I did like it to know what it costs in living expenses for a foreigner (appox 806 euros) if one already has accomodation
Well, most of the people here earn around 500-600 euros per month (if you can find a job), so it's impossible to live and survive alone.. I am greek, living in Athens at the moment but I have lived in other countries and mainly the UK for several years and I can tell you that every day here is a challenge.. Nice video, but for people who dont live here, looks like a paradise because they compare cost of living based on their country's salary
that's normal to tell you the truth. Of course, anyone would compare according to his/her budget no matter if they are foreigners or not.
i live too in Athens but ok not a challenge ..anyway i have a different opinion )) happy new year ))
Didn't you have an issue with your internet and rent a work space? Is that in your budget anywhere or did you just keep that out as it was your own need and outside of the idea of the Cost of Living vids?
Athens accommodation seems cheaper than what would it be in Madrid based on the location you are describing
Ross and Bek well you can do Valencia, or go even to Andalucía or the north and find that price or even lower... let’s stay connected I’ll help you guys out with some insider info 😉
This is SO much cheaper than here in America. I'm in shock, lol. Looking forward to 2021 💙
You have to consider the cost of living. It's really hard to live here
@@imsearching4yearsnowforana966 It depends. I was born in Amsterdam, but I will never want to come back when I leave to Ahtens next week and start my new job! I will not even earn 1/3 of my wages over here but I still will have enough.
@@qwerf1897 where do you work ? i mean you live in Athens now or Amsterdam ?
As you had mentioned about on line jobs...what sort of on line business does greece do with other countries... as i am keen to know... and i am from sri lanka
A normal price for a small apartment that yours is like 400€ max here in Greece...I would say even 300€...they ripped you off...also 1500€ per month is way too much for a Greek couple to spend
My parents rent apartent I’m kalamaki nice area Athens 400 euro month
Short term leases are always higher than monthly rental on long term leases. Most Greeks don't go out every night and don't eat out as much brining their cost much lower. But this couple is traveling around to experience the culture of each country, so they'll be going out and eating way more than the average Greek. Which makes their cost of living there for a month higher.
@@zoey8430 are you sure ?? all my friends going every day out ..if they dont go they feel illness haha..and i mean day and night !! ..and if we stay at home we called delivery ..and that cost more !!

@@rossandbek2407 Yup. I have some friends heading out there this month. They are from Portugal though so the heat is fine for them. I might go sooner as there is obviously air conditioning. Being from Scotland there is also a potential brexit round the corner so that is a motivating factor.
If you are not comfortable with the heat, October is fine. April is even better, though.
Gotta love the cheap wine in Greece!
Wine making started from ancient greece so...
Hahahah the blooper was funny !
Wine cheaper than water?
I am from athens
1 metro is quick and reliable please avoid buses
2 taverna has great food but it can be expensive, street food on the other hand can be 2-5€
3 wine and beer are cheap in the supermarkets but in my opinon they are overpriced when you go drink outside (ex.one glass of wine can be 7€ but one litre from the supermarket can be 3€).Get your beers from a market and drink them in the centre looking at the view and sit on a bench or climb to lycabettus or something (i was surprised when i heard this is illegal in other countries)

Thank you. Hello from Greece (thessaloniki)
Hi i have some questions can u help me ?
Airbnb doesn't help or improve lifes of people that actually wants to live and build something on a city. So, if you are planning to move or live for a few months in Athens I suggest doing some research on other channels and find apartments from locals that are willing to rent it for that period without bending to the pressure of rising costs for profit. 700€ for a 1bedroom apt in center of Athens is way to high than average.
Out of reality.... yet some things were right like the bus theme...
My opinion wathing the video:
1) Tap water is good only in terms of a need. It is full of chloride. Bottled water on markets can be found for 0.14cents per 500ml but usually almost everywhere its price is 0.50cents.
2) The quality of food on centre is poor. Most taverns are dirty and prices are very high... It is more value for money to eat in a michellin restaurant or similar to experience greek cuisine even for 1time than to spend the same money to eat garrbish for several times on taverns. Souvlaki is the most common street food at arround 3 euros but 8 out 10 places have also poor quality so you must pay attention. Once i had a souvlaki from monastiraki and the meat was expired... I understood it from the first bite. The thing with bakeries everywhere its true but most of them are not really cheap especially in centre. Most pies till 2euro are not very healthy choice cause they are produced using a lot of sunflower fried or baked which does not taste good. If you get natural juices yoghurt desserts or sandwiches with fresh cut vegetables with cheese ham etc.. the price can be almost half of the price you ll pay visiting a tavern. Also all bakeries have more or less the same products.
3) Almost 700euro for a house is way to much. But it depends on what you are looking for.
4) Railway and metro tickets are not that expensive thats true.
Athens is multicultural city with special beauty consists of the unique feeling of time being stopped. Maybe at 60 s. Cause noone cares.... Oh and of course there are not public toilets.... also the toilets of all shops in the centre are dirty cause lot of tourists visit them every 5sec.
5) Souvenirs shops are cheap. For example in Berlin i found a magnet of normal size for 3euros here you can find the same size with 1 or 1.5. Also miniatures of a hands size with 3 or 4 euros like acropolis statues etc. Clothes and shoes in centre are very expensive while you can find cheaper anywhere else. Except you want that the t shirt for example has a stamp on it of acropolis for example.
Oh and if you want a Greek salad better make it yourself or if it is that you go to the tavern choose it cause it would be the only thing you can see directly its quality.
Recipie for Greek Salad:
1 big tomato
Half a cucumber
1 medium green pepper
1 medium onion
Some olives
Feta cheese
Oregano
Olive oil and salt
You cut the vegetables in even pieces. Some use different way of cut for onion different for the pepper etc. I like to have even pieces to taste each vegetable with the same tension. But because the queen is tomato i like to cut a little bigger pieces. On top of vegetables you add olives. I prefer the green ones cause their flesh is hard and i like it when i chew it cause all the taste appears suddenly in your mouth. There are many varieties like kalamon olives their flesh is soft and they are bitter than any other. You add a slice of feta cheese on top again. Feta is national product with global recognition and almost each city has its own production. I prefer though goat cheese.. feta is a soft cheese goat s feta is the hardest it is spicy a lot compared to feta from cow s milk. So i take 1 slice of goat feta and i put it on top but usually i like to break it in small cubes and put everywhere on top not just on top. More soft types of feta melt more easily cause there are fluids from olive oil and vegetables and i dont like my feta to be melt. On top i add 2tablespoon of olive oil to cover as much of the surfrace as possible. And at last... if you find fresh oregano... you add everywhere as much as you like to give this meditterannean summer aroma.. but not too much cause it has a bitter taste as much as you add. I use 1 tablespoon. Also i like to have slices of baked bread with garlic and mint olive oil and oregano to eat the salad
