His wife actually died in real life 2 years before this movies release and that was a IV line she was hooked up to, she died of a brain hematoma (brain injury) and he had to pull the plug on her in 2009. So while making this movie he related so much.

Well said. I remember being let down by this ending when I first saw it in theaters. But the more I thought about it, it's an incredibly moving conclusion. It's a movie about the will to live. Whether or not he survived was irrelevant, what matters is that he fought until the end.
This scene is even better in the context of the entire movie, remember the opening scene where Neesons character is about to blow his own brains out? He wants to give up. But then the crash happens and he is fighting for survival with every inch of his being until we get to this scene. One of the most simple and powerful movies ever made that every man and boy should watch

Liam Neeson was so incredible here. His face in the last few seconds. He showed so many emotions in mere moments. He went from broken, to jubilent, to sad, to steeled resolve, to ready to fight. All in a few seconds. 10/10 performance
It is notable that he's the first to lunge at the Alpha, not the other way around. He finally accepts the inevitable fight and now takes charge. If there is a choice, that's the way to go out: defiant resistance overcoming all odds.
This scene is absolutely the most breathtaking I have ever witnessed in a film. The power of the human spirit and the will to fight on in the face of hopelessness is captured 1000 fold. The battle raging within all of us is seen in this film and the passion and love we all hold as well. Breathtaking. Spectacular. Brought me to absolute tears.
I think this movie is a must watch for all people stuck in darkness and despair. Who want to kill themselves. Forget the wolves and everything else. The final message this scene says is fight til the end.
Not really, have you ever heard the expression “I saw my life before my eyes “ when you are against the wall with fear or in a life or death situation it’s. Kemal to have those flashes in just seconds , the brain is amazing .
Here's a thought. What if the alpha is Death herself? Morrigán, the Celtic goddess of war and death sometimes took the form of a wolf. Ottway is Celtic, and a warrior. Earlier in the film, Ottway attempts suicide but the howl of a wolf distracts him. What if the howl was Morrigán herself? Calling on a Celt not to die by his own hand, but in battle like a warrior. EDIT: not to blow my own horn or anything, but this helps explain why the wolves in the film don't act like wolves in real life.
Actualy, they were interviewing the director and Liam. The interviewer mentioned that a viewer perceived that they died in the plane crash, and that everything after that was purgatory. The director, surprised, praised the viewer!

He starts the film with his spirit utterly sapped, on the precipice of hell itself. By the end of the film living or dying is irrelevant. All that matters is the battle in front of him. It could be said a person is defined by that which they overcome. So to avoid the real fights as he was doing at the beginning is to rob yourself of a reason to be. The impossible circumstances he was pitted against gave him a cause to fight for again. The wolves could be entirely metaphorical. The black wolf could be death itself, stalking him as he neared his inevitable end. The true battle was between the character and hopelessnesss. So then it is entirely irrelevant to the story whether liam or the wolf won the final battle. Liam defeated hopelessness either way and that's the only real fight there ever has been.
Who wins or loses doesn’t matter, because he was courageous enough to put his best effort to fight and die in a fight he knew will not survive. That is strength beyond belief.

As my Opinion, This Scene is one of my most favorites, Because the Alpha was actually an father, and it made him realize it was a father, which means he also realized that the wolf he shot earlier was the mother, they both have their loved ones dead, they both feel the lost, the anger. It's like the wolf had sense his feelings the same way it has, which is why it taken him time to figure out and let him prepare for their last battle into the fray. And the scene after the credits where it shows them both lying down with their last breathes, it gets me emotional because they both died feeling the same emotions, they both might get to see their lover ounce again in the after life. I'd thought the reason he was fighting so hard to survive was because he'd resolved to be reunited with his ex-wife, only for this scene to show that he had lost everything, and out of everyone there he had nothing to go back to. But he always fought against nature, god and himself to survive. Beautiful.

His wife has been with him the entire time and reminds him to not be afraid. Notice how he builds a crucifix out of the wallets and she's right beside him, his guardian angel. His father's poem was a sign for him to never quit fighting, once more into the fray. He kills the wolf and reunites with his wife in heaven. Brilliant film.
