    I bought my Makita dcs6421 used from Home Depot tool rental. Currently have two of them. Great saws . I used them for a couple years now. Never any breaks or repairs. I run a 20 inch bar on one, and a 28 inch bar on the other. Only use no ethanol gas as well.

    I know everyone hate sthem, but I have a little Poulan saw. I got it in 2007. I have used it quite a bit, cleaning stuff up after storms, normal yard work. Cut down a couple of trees with it. It still is running great starts on the first or second pull every time. I bent the bar on it a last year and had to replace that, but no real problems other than that.

    • @SteveRobReviews
      @SteveRobReviews  Před 7 lety

      I don't hate Poulan chainsaws , they have their purpose and that's light duty as their intended. The ones for $100 are not capable of doing the same tasks as a $1000 saw and yes some try to get away with it. LOL In my experience the saw started fine and ran great but the first time I used it on a 12 inch tree it sheared off the crank at the clutch. At Princess Auto up here they sell skids of factory reconditioned poulans for a low price . You seem to have one thats running great , nice to hear Tom. Cheers

    Here is a story for you. I had two Stihl chain saws. One was a 015L and the other was a Farm Boss. Both ran hard for years cutting fire wood. Never had a problem with either one. I loaned them to my son-in-law and he said he had nothing but problems with them. I go over there to investigate and I find the saws laying on the garage floor out or the cases and everything scattered. The saws were filthy. He had not cleaned either one and had left the gas in them for months. I turn around get back into my truck and go home. He called a few days later and ask if I had another chain saw he could borrow because the two he had borrowed would not run. I told him to take them to a repair shop and get them fixed. What does he do. He goes out and buys a new Stihl. I love my family but they don't take care of anything!

    Nice review and a nice collection saws. My stepdad has an old Stihl Farm Boss that he's definitely got his money out of over the years and it still runs like a champ. I've got a small Poulon Pro (16" I believe) from a pawn shop to use around the house. It looks brand new, I only had to pull the breather off and pop the throttle cable back into it's guide. For as little as we use it at the house I hope it holds up. I wish it had a chain break and dogs but for $40 I couldn't beat it.

    All great saws,and with regular carburetors that you can adjust,rebuild,or replace easily. I've had a 50cc makita dcs520i from the 90s for almost 20 years. I bought it in a pawnshop many years ago and still runs great.i have a stihl ms310 that's cut alot of firewood over the last 12 years and an ms441c that takes care of bigger trees. All have been great saws and have needed only routine maintenance. I bought a 550xp husqvarna with mind to upgrade from my old makita. It was used and needed a little work,but when I tried to get my only dealer to work on it he said he didnt have any parts for it in stock. He said itd be 8 to 10 weeks for anything he ordered. The 550xp is a popular saw that's been in production for a few years,yet he had no gaskets,seals,piston,ring,cylinder ,not one thing in stock other than a tune up kit. My stihl dealers ( of which I have 3 to chose from) keep a good stock of even obscure screws from 20 year old saws. I'd not hesitate to buy another makita, if only they had actual dealers.

    100% agree with Steve's comments on the Makita / Dolmar.
    I'm in Australia and have the identical saw. We don't get the Dolmars out here so everything is branded Makita and this saw kicks arse.
    Only difference is Aussie version just has black plastic upper mouldings. Very well made and power to spare.
    It is on the upper end of the weight scale compared to the competition but is by no means uncomfortable in use. Check out my vid on a simple air filter mod for this model to always keep clean dust free air running through the engine.

    One reason crankshafts snap is because ya get the saw good and hot, get the chain hot, tighten the chain, and let the saw cool. When the chain cools, it shrinks.... you can snap crankshafts that way.... so don't leave the chainsaw tensioned.

      @SteveRobReviews  Před 7 lety

    Oh god Poulan... I have a horror story on that one. My dad had a Poulan Pro that had to be adjusted after about 6 months, and after a year he tried to get it warrantied tod due to the gas line and primer bulb going bad. It was still under full warranty but appearantly the warranty doesn't touch "anything that gasoline touches". Um... isn't this about 70% of the saw? He paid the full price to get the parts and fixed it himself but god if that thing isn't horrible to start. It still technically "works" but it now just sits in the back of the garage never being touched. It takes about 30 pulls to get going, sometimes needs to be adjusted since it changes the adjustment for some reason not to mention that it won't idle whatsoever.
    Then he took the opportunity that came along to buy a 1-year-old Poulan for $60. He took the deal and is now regretting it deeply. It has too been put on that shelf with the other one lol.
    To compare: 25 year old Stihl 026 just replaced the carburetor and it starts in the 4th pull every time without any issues, runs perfectly, idles great. I love that old saw. He also has a significantly older 032 that is very veyr heavy since it was made before plastic was everywhere (almost everything on it is metal except the gas and bar oil tank)
    My dad now has a saying. "The problem with a Poulan is that it's a Poulan."

      @jayqck Před 5 lety

      @@rock4349 Rest assured, Dolmar chainsaws are not gone. However, the name will be changing to Makita.
      While remaining models under the name Dolmar are still being sold, they will be replaced once they're sold out.
      The same design, engineering, and manufacturing goes into providing reliable quality, powerful performance, and ergonomic comfort.
      So while the name has changed, the characteristics that made Dolmar a trusted brand still remain.
      How Dolmar Became Makita
      TransitionIn 1991, Makita acquired Dolmar. While Makita was familiar with electric-powered tools, Dolmar was experienced with gasoline-powered tools.
      Combining their knowledge and expertise enabled them to create an outstanding marriage of raw power and cutting edge technology.
      For approximately 25 years now, the two brands have continued to market and sell their products under different names. But because Makita has built such a strong brand name for itself over the years, they’ve decided to merge their outdoor power equipment and Dolmar’s products under one name - Makita.

    You should try the Echo X series like the CS501P 50cc saw or CS620P 60cc saw. Great professional chainsaws from Echo you cannot buy in stores although you can buy online at Home Depot who then sources a hardware store for the product. You have to go to hardware stores like Stihl to buy them directly.

      I have the 501P w/20" bar and the 620P w/24" bar. They are solid built chainsaws and start very easy! The 501P isn't broke in yet, but it's a lightweight saw that's perfect for limbing and general cutting purposes. I can't truly speak for it's power yet because the saw is basically new, but it had no problem whatsoever making crosscuts in several rounds of locust with the bar almost buried. The 620P is broke in and it's a chip spit'n monster! It would easy pull a 27" bar. Japanese quality indeed. My only real complaint would be with the air filters they chose to use. I'd have much rather seen them use ones like the Dolkita's. Replacement parts for Echo can be found online and in stores easily.

    Huskavarna has two lines one line for the big box stores and one for the small engine shops. And there's some differences between the two lines. Kinda like DeWalt did with their tool line they have cheap and professional series.
    The only reason I run Huskavarna is for the simple fact if I need to get a chain I could run to the big box stores and get one. But I but mine from a small engine shop I have a 50cc and 3 bars for it (14-18-22 inches) for the amount I cut it's the best way to go for me.And I have a Sthil pole chainsaw.
    When polan was made 20 years ago I had a 49cc one I bought for a emergency clean and it ran great until some prick stole it. I think I had put 600 cord of wood through it before it got stolen. I wouldn't buy one now though they are a one run and done product now

I don't think It would hold up to heavy use but has done fine for its intend purchase .I did pick up an echo cs 620 pw for 600 dollars I don't have much time on the saw but so far I happy .I think if you need a pro saw then stihl or husky is the way to go for sure but if I was looking at the home or ranch series saw then I think echo is the way to go if you don't mind the weight and limited chain and bar selection .

I've got a 73cc Makita, and have had it for two years now. Bought it through Home Depot. Quite difficult to find parts for it. But JacksSmallEngines in the States as well as a few other websites carry its parts. There's so many different names for this 73cc saw and its variants. The one I bought is the EA7300P. I agree with buying from a real dealer 100% . Saws are so good these days, and so close in performance, I choose the dealer, not the saw. I will never buy another stihl product because my local Stihl dealer is a price gouger for parts, and is not very customer friendly. I went there with my dad since I was 5 years old. The folks still remember me from then. I am 43 now. But all those years of loyalty really mean nothing except they think they can charge an arm and a leg because I'm too loyal to change dealers. I prefer Stihl but I own one Husqvarna too, an Echo, and I have an old John Deere not sure who actually made those, I have seen people claim Echo and Homelite made them I don't know. I have 5 Stihl saws though. I would only buy Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo, Makita or I guess Jonsered and Redmax that are basically just a red Husqvarna. Around here though Stihl dealers are everywhere. I know of one Husqvarna dealer sure there is others but without looking online I don't know of any. I did just find a dealer selling Jonsered and Redmax though but its an hour or more away and not sure if they even have saws they have mowers and trimmers but on their site they don't show saws. I didn't even know there was Jonsered mowers but they have them at this dealer. I want one of the 64cc Makita saws can't think of what the model number is. I think the Echo 590 is the best farm/ranch series saw sure seems to be a hell of a lot more saw for the money then a Husqvarna 455 or the Stihl MS290 or whatever the new Farm Boss model number is. That Echo here in the US is only $399 and a local shop has reconditioned Echos and that saw is only $300 there.

      @matthewolson8875 Před 7 lety +1

      makita is keeping the dolmar color ... but its all gonna be makita I think. there are others that are way more versed on what is going on than me. Spike60 knows about the huskys.... I would assume he'd have a line on whats going on with dolmar as well.

  • @John-ls6hz

    Be careful buying some of those lower cc Husqvarna/Jonsereds Some are rebranded Poulans.. I found that out the hard way I bought a Jonsered saw a number of years ago. It was a 55 CC rebranded Poulans. I traded that saw in less than 6 mths. Every time I used that saw something broke. I bought a 2165Jonsered pro saw... I've had it for my number years already likely over 10 now. It's been nothing but gas and oil/chains /bars 10 cords a year minimum.

      @@SteveRobReviews I believe it's the homeowner lines that are a problem. One of the best saws I ever had was an old husky 50 my dad bought it used and gave it to me I used it for 20 years very little trouble sadly I think those days are past when you find quality in that cc range

    • @JesseLJohnson

      Husqvarna or its parent company think Electrolux used to or still owns Husky but they also own Poulan, Redmax, Jonsered and I heard they bought McColluch too but not sure. If you look at a Redmax or Jonsered though they look like a red Husqvarna.

    Poulan or pukeland as they are called down home, is garbage, overheating, hard starting, very delicate.
    Chainsaws in cases, hehehe, first thing to throw away, maybe keep a chain guard.

      Ever notice how new poulan's smell so bad when the first come out of the box. Me fadder bought a couple for our saw mill, he called em phew-lan's. And to tell the truth, they always smelled different than the jonsereds and huskies. Maybe it has something to do with the fact we could never get them to go tank for tank, oil and gas. Best we could do was 1/2 a tank of lub to a tank of gas. Maybe it was the chain/bar burning. only thing we didn't do was drill the lub passages bigger

    The old Poulan saw were good saws the same with homelite and McCullough, The makita/dolmar saws are great saw the only bad thing are parts can be super expensive in the states .I've owned a lot of different saws and I think you have to judge a chainsaw on that particular model and not the brand there are a lot of farm model stihl that I wouldn't waste my money on I would go echo or makita best bang for the buck if your talking pro saws then stihl hard to beat.I do have an echo cs620 pw that's has been a great saw it's the best bang for buck your going to get for around 600 dollars nothing even close to it in the price rang also the makita 5600 for a farm /ranch grade saw is a smoking deal for around 450 dollars.Its probably the only farm/ranch saw I would consider.
