  • Londonist's 12-part documentary series exploring London’s historical, mythical and contemporary pagan connections.
In episode 11, Robert Kingham explores one of the pink granite obelisks erected by Thutmose III in 1450 BC to flank the grand temple of the sun in Heliopolis - or, as they are better known, Cleopatra's Needles.

    Excellent and fascinating series!
My only complaint - episodes way too short!

Would have been worth mentioning the scarring to the monument’s sphinxes delivered by German zeppelin-launched bombs in WWI. That clock face is also on the ShellMex centre just to the West of the Savoy Hotel.

I was about to comment the same thing (at 1:56 the shrapnel pockmarks to the base are very clear). As I recall there's a plaque close by which records that they were caused by one of the very first bombs ever to be dropped on London from the air.

      Just to correct you Michael:
The damage to the plinth and the sphinx was caused during an air raid a few minutes before midnight on Tuesday 4th September, 1917. A group of five Gotha bombers attacked London. The bomb that fell here was intended for Charing Cross station but fell short. It hit a tram and the conductor and two passengers were killed. It left a hole in the road leaving the underground railway visible. After the raid one of the bombers was shot down and disappeared into the Medway.

I was watching a doco on Heliopolis and I never realised that's where the obelisk actually came from. Obviously it came from Egypt like but I never realised it was Heliopolis. Fascinating stuff.

Did you know the obelisk is in London thanks to donations from the public and the support of a wealthy English surgeon and freemason, Sir Erasmus Wilson. He cut a block in the form of a rough ashlar from the base and presented it to a masonic lodge as a gift. The block now resides in our collection at Museum of Freemasonry, London.

The whole story of getting it to London is a cracking one which we didn't have time to include in the film. I really enjoyed the article on it in FMT.

Electrum is a material of which the composition is not certain . I have visited the obelisk of the Cocorde many times before the capstone was covered with gold, and many times after. The covering has not given a positive result, some of the charm was lost since. It is my impression that the effect that obelisks bring about was diminished since, and that must be because the paramagnetic flow of granite is somehow altered by the gold. Isn't it said that the capstone of On was transparent, and reflected the colours of the rainbow?

@@melissadavis4436 Ah yes just destroy monuments you don't agree with or respect its history, pretty sure there's an example of that in recent history with the Taliban and that huge statue of the Buddha in Afghanistan. Interesting how you hold the same view as them.
