- How to Build a 4x8 Mobile Workbench | FREE BUILD PLANS | DIY Workbench
If you’re looking to build a 4x8 mobile workbench, this is the video for you!
Build plans are available for free at www.bluenorthwoodworking.com
To determine the length of your legs, first determine the height of your bench. For example, my bench is 37” tall. This left me with 31” legs. My caster wheels are 5 ¼” tall and the plywood top of the bench is ¾” high. So, 37 - 5 ¼ - ¾ = 31.
TOOLS USED:
Right angle clamps

Let me know if you have any questions or comments. I will do my best to get back to you.
Thanks!

My dad passed away 8 months ago, I feel you man, he's the reason why I do woodworking today. It's hard without him.
Sorry for your loss. Carry on his passion 💙
Hey James, I used your design and my bench came out perfect for what I needed. Thanks for the plans on your site. Definitely subscribed and also appreciate you sharing the story about your old man. ❤
Thanks Fernando 👍🏻👍🏻
I would love it if you would do a video on how to build a sturdy, flat, level and plum table for plainers
Great video - simple design and execution. I built this yesterday with my dad. I added 1/8" hardboard top and bottom too. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Ken!
I'm just getting my start in to woodworking, and I was thinking the first thing I was going to do was build a bench. Well, Now I got a nice, easy video with a strong looking bench!
Thanks James!
Good luck, Big Tony!
Exactly what I was looking for-thanks!
You got it, Dr. Johnson!
Thanks for the plans! I’m going to be using the table for a giant board game table, specifically axis and allies! 👍🏻👍🏻
Enjoy, Robert 😎😎
real cool video! love that you touched on you Dad! Without a doubt he;s smiling
Thanks David :)
James, sharp instructional on building a mobile workbench. Your video is well done, good sound, clean visuals. I like the story about your late father and plan to post a picture of my own in my work area. I think you are on your way to a successful series and I wish you the best. I am subscribed and liked - so keep the good work coming!
Hey there, thanks so much! I appreciate the good words 👍🏻👍🏻
Love your how to video on this work bench, I decided to build it today. I took your material list with me to Home Depot. I had them cut the one sheet to 86 inches and then I cut the rest at my house. It was a very easy build with your free step by step PDF file. Thank you 👍🏻
Love to hear that, thanks Ron!
Awesome video! I just went out and got the lumber. I've never done woodworking but you do a nice job of making it seem accessible.
Good luck, let me know if you have questions :)
Nice and simple. Love it
Currently half way through building one myself! Thank you!

Good luck, mya!
Great video! Thanks for sharing, adding this to my project list.
Thanks Melanie!
Nice big bench! I’m sure you’ll see a massive difference having that much working space.
Thanks Peter. I love it already, so much space!
Thanks for the video and free plans. Going to build this one for my shop.
Enjoy Jay 👍🏻
Thank you. I am absolutely going to make this work bench this weekend.
Get er done!
I made this workbench (or very similar) about 5 years ago. I have since gotten more serious with woodworking and realized I should've made the top of this a torsion box so that the entire surface of the bench can be a flat reference.
Nice 👍🏻
I built mine and it turned out great! Instead of prebuilding the bottom shelf. I attached the sides to the legs, added the cross member and slid it's top on. May have slowed me down, but it worked. Following your process definitely made it easier.
Love to hear it man!
Thank you! This is a great video! I'm hoping to put a heavy flat file on the bottom shelf - do you think as long as I get heavy-duty casters, it could support about 150 lbs?
I have had some pretty heavy wood on my bottom shelf and it’s been fine. The cross bracing should make it plenty strong enough, in my opinion.
When I eventually make this, it will be used for cutting fabric and leather for bag-making and quilting. I’ll use melamine as the top so my mats and fabrics don’t get snagged.
I’ve not really made anything since woodworking class 47yrs ago. I’m not afraid though I am wondering how I’d get it out of the house when I move in 2-4yrs. I’m considering using bolts instead of screws with braces at the corners so it is easier to break down.
Thanks for the video!
Good luck Christine. I used screws on my last bench, which I disassembled and reassembled without issue when moving.
It’s really cool you would n your dad, mine has been in heaven for 40 years more and to this day there are little things that make me think of him.
I to am making one to flatten slabs. I have a real nice sled set up don’t want to mention who’s because i do not know if it would be advertising for them, anyway i would like to make it so the sled could be removed early so i can use it for an every day work table as well.
I really like these plans and plan to use them to make my table, maybe i will send pic when done.
Hi Howard, I would consider routing in some dovetail grooves and using microjig clamps to keep your sled in place, while also being able to remove it anytime you want. Good luck with your table :)
enjoyed the video an instructions...Questions..if I want to use t tracks on the top of the work bench, would I use the same type of plywood or would you recommend something else?
Hi John, plywood will be fine to use
Question about the caster wheels. What wheels do you suggest (Amazon ? ) and is there any issue fastening them to the 4x4 end grain ?
Hi Tom, I just went with a highly rated wheel off of Amazon. Make sure you take in account the full height of the wheel prior to cutting your legs. My 4” casters were 5 1/4” tall if I recall. I didn’t like screwing into the end grain, but it worked fine. I used washers to help.
Great video man! I was wondering how its holding up? I've made plans to build something similar but a lot of guys are saying I should add supports in the middle as well to prevent sagging long ways in the future. Whats your opinion, do you think that would be necessary or nah?
RIP to your father
Never a bad idea to have extra support. Mine has held up with no issues at this point and I typically have a couple hundred pounds of wood on the bottom shelf at all times. And thank you 💙
It would have been nice if you had included a list of materials.
Material list is in the plans… 👍🏻

Great video! RIP to your old man 🖤
