      Hello, It's so wonderful to hear you and your daughters are enjoying these videos. It warms my heart. I bet they are so excited about their hatch, and I hope all goes well for you! I am always careful to handle the birds with love, and to give them treats (in moderation) and so they have learned to trust me. They also like being talked to because the tones of our voices lets them understand our mood, and they know not to be worried. (Hunting predators are silent or angry sounding, and so if you talk calmly, it relaxes them.) They all have different personalitites though, and some are much more comfortable with being handled and cuddled than others.
      Good luck with your serama hatch. If you will be keeping them with larger birds please do introduce them carefully and ensure all the birds have plenty of space. i wanted to let you know this to avoid any heartache, because seramas are so very tiny compared to even bantam birds of other breeds, but they have equally as much pride. And so a regular chicken squabble can sometimes end up badly for them due to their tiny size. I hope you and your girls have lots of joy from your chicks next week and from your future seramas! Best wishes.

    Thoroughly enjoying these videos! Sweet seramas... :)
    Just a little concerned about the raw eggs. It may encourage egg eating should one egg ever break. Better to cook them first and they won't connect a broken egg with yumminess.

      Thank you! So glad you are enjoying the videos. I had also wondered about this potential issue but had no problems so far. There have been a few times when the girls have laid soft (shell-less) eggs and ended up eating them, but they've not eaten their normal hard-shelled eggs. Thanks for being concerned though. For now I am not worried, but will monitor their behaviour. They love the raw eggs so much, and are not as keen on scrambled eggs. I'm a soft touch!

If that happens, I may need to find homes for some, even though I would love to keep them all! You will see in future what happens in the videos. I do not know yet. Thanks for your lovely comments. I have a dozen Serama eggs in my incubator, I have other chickens but first time Seramas---will I need a special food for them or can I feed them regular Chick Start?

    • @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266
      @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266  Před 3 lety

      Hi Lisa, good luck with your hatch! How exciting to be getting seramas for the first time. I have found regular chick starter crumbs is fine for the seramas. Do check to make sure the granules are fine enough for the first few days. I used amazon's extra select brand and allen & Pages smallholder range chick crumbs, which were both fine.
      It is your water situation that will need some consideration. What are you planing on using? They are so very tiny. In their first week or so of life it may be best to get a fairly flat dish/saucer (say no more than half an inch high) and fill it with pebbles then put the water in. Then show them where it is a few times by dipping the beak. This way they can climb onto it to have a drink and minimise the risk of drowning. I used to use milk bottle lids but they can be tipped over and need constant monitoring. Even the water saucers will need frequent monitoring and topping up- eg if wood chips get into them and soak up all the water etc. I am planning to use sand for this reason (personal preference.)
      The other thing to note is that they need tiny grit when they start eating other foods, but I would sprinkle a tiny bit on after the first week or so. This is the link to the grit I have been using, which they still prefer even as adult seramas: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07NY2ZBKD. And the hens also need extra fine oyster shell when they grow up - the regular sized stuff is just too big for them. I've used both of the following and found them to be good: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07GS6FXVN or www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0037XVKMO
      Best wishes.

    No hate but isn’t it a bad habit to feed chickens eggs?

    • @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266
      @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266  Před 3 lety

      Hi, Chickens love their eggs and in nature they would eat any eggs that might accidentally break, or any eggs which don't hatch, are unviable etc to supplement their nutrition. Some people consider it a bad habit to let them eat raw eggs because it could teach chickens to eat their own eggs. If someone's flock does behave like this then yes, I would also be cautious about feeding them eggs, but my flock generally doesnt have this issue. I never break the eggs open in front of the chickens because they are very, very smart and might learn from this. They just see it appear in a little dish. I like to feed them their own eggs sometimes as additional nutrition. Eggs are full of good things and chickens enjoy them too!

I realised it is better to clip his wings and have him safe in our garden than to risk losing him again. He was so shocked by the experience of getting lost, poor thing, that I am sure he will be happier this way.
