As watch lovers, and possibly as watch collectors, we tend to become almost immune to the big numbers watches such as the Rolex demand. But if you step back and think about it like the average man in the street, £20,000 for any watch is simply madness - it's a watch, for f*ck sake! I simply wouldn't pay that much, no matter how wealthy I was. It's just silly.

Well, luxury means it's meant for rich people, we would hate to admit it, but most of the customers who buy rolexes aren't into watches all that much. And aren't on the wrist of most watch lovers. What's is funny, is that a rolex use to cost about a few weeks, or more like a month's pay when they originally came out; being somewhat attainable for the common man who wanted quality. Now they're not meant for rich kids and old men who hace a few dollars and remember a rolex was a pipe dream as a kid.

It is more accurate than 2 Rolex and Omega seamaster that I have tested... my Steinhart ocean 1 39 with the same mowement got +3 sec per day and San Martin with NH 35 -2 sec per day. AS I have posted before I have the Rolex 114060, a San Martin (V2) and a Cronos. The SM has the NH35, the Cronos the PT5000. All three watches, in their respective price points, are what I expected. I don't wear any of them much - I have many (50+) watches. My work watches are all Chinese made or at least cased with the Seikos. My daily is a Date Just 36. When going from the Seiko watches or Chinese to the Rolex it is amazing the difference in quality and feel. This all begs the question - what will happen when the Chinese double or triple their craftsmanship to meet the increasing demand for quality? I hope all have a joyous and safe Holiday Season and find comfort with family and friends. Peace to all.

Well the super-clones that can fool even watch makers are like twice the price of a San Martin/ Cronos. So its not necessary ridiculous to imagine. The better question is if you want an exact copy of the watch, probably why San Martin and crono don't always try and get every detail right.

I have no Rolex, though I do have an Omega Speedmaster. I think aspiring to Omega levels is doable for the Chinese, but it will take more than technical brilliance to do so. An in house caliber is a must. COSC certified would do well for pedigree. The last thing is a big ask. Authorized dealers and a marketing arm that knows watch collectors well and doesn't play around with poorly translated literature and a clear brand identity instead of alphabet soup branding that just makes you shake your head. In short, they could do well to poach some talent from the Swiss.

@@kb9oak749 The PT 5000 has shown that it can be chronometer capable. Both Cronos and SM offer base level Swiss Movements in their watches. As for in-house movements, I look at Laco and their claim on 'Made in Germany' while using Japanese and Swiss movements. The point I am trying to make is that the Chinese might at some point move past what they are doing wrong. Similar to the Japanese in the 50's and sixties with cars and electronics.

This just proves how silly you are to pay $20K for a Rolex or any watch. The fact that San Martin gets so close is proof in point. The point also about the movement to me is no issue, who cares if you need to wind the watch every day compared to every 2 days, big deal. Any watch can be regulated generally to within 5-10 seconds a day if you put the work in & anyway who cares as long as it is not running 30 seconds a day out. NH35’s PT5000 & Selita’s are all cheap & easily replaced. The beauty of a cheap watch is you don’t care if it gets scratched, broken, stolen etc, it’s what a watch should be a timepiece not a investment or status symbol.

Right!? Steeldive and San Martin just prove, decisively, that the "heritage" brands are & have been taking ppl to the cleaners for decades. They're just taking advantage of ppl's insecurities, and could make and sell the same product at a fraction of the cost reaching a far larger market share if they wanted to. Instead, they keep the price high to keep up the image of exclusivity. Whatever, I'd rather put a down payment on a house than wear a 👑 on my wrist.

If you're so insecure that you have to prove your worth with an object, buy a sweet car. Stuff you wear should not be your investment, it's just gear. The cost comes in the name on the dial, especially rolex, they use to be tool watches, so they weren't ever really meant to be "pretty", maybe we forget that fact too easily. Bonjour,

After seeing the price differences from 2 years ago, I decided to pass. What going on with Rolex reminds me of the time I wanted a Harley Davidson (1996). Back then you had to place your name on a list in conjunction with a $500.00 deposit and wait about 6 months. Guess what? Now Harley can’t give them away as the competition has surpass them in quality and reliability. I guess I’ll wait until the market returns back to earth. Still it’s a very nice watch. By the way I did get the Harley; but on my terms and a in and out transaction.

Yes, good as the Rolex is, it's hard to see where the extra $10000-20000 gets you, doesn't it. It's even harder to see when you compare the $1200 Ginault to the real Rolex, or other brands like Squale, Davosa, and Steinhart, all of which use good swiss movements and very good production. As good as Rolex? Probably not, but WAY cheaper. If you want some good homages of the Sea Dweller/Deep Sea, try the OceanX brand. Their normal watches are pretty nice and their occasional Damascus versions are amazing.

First many thanks for the great video! In my sn019-g are no visible dust particles. The build quality is absolutely outstanding and has nothing to do with the sn017-V3 from San Martin, which is much cheaper made! I also own an original Rolex Submariner 40mm from the year 2000. The build quality of the sn019-g is much better and it also looks and wear much better. The sn019-g is an absolutely dream homage of the actual 41mm Rolex Submariner! I would never buy a watch for 20.000 when I can get a dream twin with an also Swiss Made Sellita SW-200 dream built workhorse movement. The sn019-g is an absolute dream watch, if you hand over it to a Rolex owner he always will be very impressed and also be shocked about the the much to payed money! I think it was this video that kept me from ordering the SM. What probably did it for me was the wrist-shot, showing the ridiculous overhang - on a wrist slightly larger than mine (~6.7 in/17cm). Some other reviews I found of the SN019 were of a slightly older variant with much less prominent end-links and a taper down to 16mm. And that one looked perfectly fine on a YTer with my wrist-size.
Since I found different specs on different store-pages for the taper on the bracelet, I contacted SM and they very politely confirmed (via photos from their stock-room) that it now tapers from 21 to 18mm. They also measured the male end-links for me and how far they stick out - at which point I had to give up on the watch.
Which really bothers me. I still think this is an excellent watch and no other SM Sub has the date/cyclops, 4Hz movement, glossy dial combo that I want . The Sugess seems to comes closest to what I want and it's nice and thin for a Chinese homage - but I'm not a fan of the font they use on the dial and of the name "Seaman". Plus consensus seems to be that SM have superior finish compared to Sugess and I'm really impressed with the level of finish on my SN0109 - so I'd like to stick with the brand. Oh well... guess I'm going to have to save up for the real thing.. ;)

The one thing that really standout is $20,000 vs $300. For $300 you got about 99.9% of what a Rolex is. So you’re paying $17,000 extra for what?

Great comparison! I think many of us, when purchasing a San Martin, do not expect absolute high-horology quality, but the product put out by SM is some of the best you can find for an everyday wear timepiece between $200-$400 USD. I get the feeling you described--close, but not quite there--with my sn-046g (the orange dial skx/marinemaster): a great watch, definitely better than the original in multiple aspects, but the unique bracelet it comes with is somewhat sharp and almost as heavy as the actual watch. Though the model is a semi-recent addition to their line-up, I think it will be consistency where we see the most change with San Martin in the near future.

It's not a rumor, it's reality. I wouldn't say Rolex has parts made in China (but I couldn't be certain) but entry level Swiss Made certainly does. To be able to call a watch Swiss Made, 60% of the value of the watch has to be made in Switzerland and so does the movement. If you compare Swiss man hour costs with Chinese, you can see that this means that most of the watch can be made in China no problem, including dial, hands, bracelet, case, etc.

Well obviously the Rolex is more accurate and the 904 has a slightly better luster I personally would rather own the San Martin. I'd be less worried about it.
P.S. I got the new Sugess V4 Day Tona and MAN, compared next to the $50,000 version I'd take it everyday over the Rolex.

I've never heard anybody call that Rolex the Starbucks, it's always been Kermit/Cermit. I couldn't focus on the rest of the video after that.

Why not compare it with SN017 then..?

I debated that a lot but as this one was the one they built to directly homage the 126610 I found it more fitting

The chinese watch looks surprisingly well made but why go for a 1 to 1 copy? This is not a homage, it's a knockoff with a different logo. I hate Rolex's price takeoff and think it's ridiculous for a brand producing 1.000.000 watches a year, always using the same design. Just scrap it and make something interesting like the San Martin GMT, which may be inspired by Grand Seiko but at least it's not a total ripoff.

I totally agree with you, the San Martin SN0116 or the SN0129 you mention are absolutely the way San Martin should take it from now on

That swiggling bezel on Rolex has shocked me, I admit.

there's definitely a law of diminishing returns with watches. Is the Rolex worth 30 times more than the San Martin? Probably not. I'd rather put the 10k on some Apple stock. Fun fact, if you put 10k on Apple stock 25 years ago, it'd be worth around 12 MILLION dollars right now. The Rolex or 12 mil? I'll take the 12 million.

If this $10,000 watch doesn’t destroy the $300 watch in every category by a large factor it’s a fail in my eyes.

When at the start you say something like "comparing it to the real thing"... if something is not real it's "unreal" i.e. imaginary or a simulation - none of which apply to the San Martin. It is much better to refer to the Rolex as the homaged/original/cloned piece, and not "the real thing". I think we've been corrupted by decades of Coke advertising. Thanks for the comparison.

Thanks for the excellent comparison. I agree with you the 017 was a much better size and feel, and hope someday they decide to refine that V2 model to better compete.

The sharp edges on the bracelet andugs of the SN017 really ruin what is otherwise a very good watch. I wish they focus on finishing and deburring their watches better.

@@altamushg agreed, I’d also appreciate an option for glossy dial. The sunburst dials are not my preference.

  • @bauscianerazzurro2906

What's the point of these comparisons? San Martin if you gonna actually use the watch for its purpose, Rolex if you gonna show off or speculate on the market

San Martin just needs to learn how to make the rehaut shallower. This is my biggest criticism of their Submariner homage watches.
