  • In this video we're going to go over everything I found wrong with my J3 cub. I kind of feel like its a short list, making me think that there's going to be a lot that my mechanic uncovers. But that'll be for another video!

    Carl if you guys need any help or whatever come see me over at the Dillon Hangar. Also you need to go talk to Vern Rich about your welding repairs he can take care of all of that stuff you described easily. His shop is over off of Deer Valley and 9th. Looks like a fun project.

    Pretty neat having come across this video.
    My apprentices father had owned the plane before it off-fielded. Used to be based in Odessa, TX.

    Good luck on your project, Carl. Can't wait to see videos of the restoration and when it's finished. IMO, I don't know if I could take on such a project, I think I would rather have kept looking for a plane that was already flyable or very close to it, but still the same hope the best.

    My first question is, what's been done to the fuselage to support a O-320? Did someone just bolt on a 160hp and go, or has the fuselage been beefed up? That's the first thing I'd look at. I'd also remove the fabric and do an inspection of all the tubing, especially around the cabin area since it had a hard landing. Since you're not going to do aerobatics in it. I'd look at installing full length wings. A J-3 with that much horsepower will be fun. Good luck on your project.

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  Před 2 lety

      Answers. No idea it's been flying this way since the 70s with over 750 hours on the frame. I know there were modifications done. We're inspecting the plane inside and out. for any corrosion, cracking, or other issues. I would love to get full length wings, Actually talked with a company about it at OSH. Thanks for your thoughts.

  • @stephenstidham3022
    @stephenstidham3022 Před měsícem

    Common practice to cut those old, stiff fuel lines. They get so hard and stiff, that they are all most fused to the fuel line. Best to replace with new anytime a wing is removed.

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  Před měsícem

      All fuel lines firewall aft have been replaced with hard lines. =) All new flex lines firewall forward. Anything having to do with fuel has been replaced, accept the wing tanks. But we modified those.

    Plane looks good, it's a GO for sure. Nothing mayor to repair so far. You are doing a good job with the inspection and evaluating damage. Very smart thing to do at this point of time. It will take time and $$ we know that, but it will be so worth it at the end.

    The notch in the door is added so the door will clear the lift struts when opening it. The wheels and tires appear to be the stock J3 Cub 8.00x4 size.

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  Před 2 lety

      I believe they are the stock size. I'm getting new tires hopefully this week. I've seen the window cut out on a few other planes, I'm wondering if it's needed more with the clip wing?

    • @stanley917
      @stanley917 Před 2 lety

      @@flywiththeguys the cutout on the clip wing J3 lower door is required to clear the lift stuts - without it, the door will not fully open. There is no cut out on the stock J3.
