    This was my last winter's project, it is my brand new experimental Super Cub. I am on the Columbia River here in the Pacific Northwest of the USA down on what I refer to as my playground and practice area. It is a place I have spent many hours burning up hydrocarbons to make the oil industry very happy.
    I am posting this in response to a few negative posts I have seen. By the way, my channel, my rules. I will remove them when I see them so you might as well not waste your time. Give me a thumbs down if you don't like this video, or any of the other videos and leave my channel. That is the best way to vote here.

    Great to see how you test your gear. Love the discussions on safety and risk mitigation when trying out a new sand bar/strip (aerated sand, etc.). Would love to hear some discussions about how you know where you can/can’t land. BLM vs. county or state property, etc.

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  Před 3 lety +1

      That can be a sticky subject for us in the lower 48. Alaska is pretty much wide open for off airport but where I live I have been Mirandized for landing on National Forest lands. I showed them the CFR's as they applied and that is pretty much where it ended. The BLM is I believe much more problematic because each area has rules that apply to the specific area and it is pretty hard to find out what is legal from the agency in charge. They are quick to usually say it is not legal...

    Whats extremely interesting about this as well is its a pretty much stock Javron Kit going back with the lycoming 320 and demonstrates amazing STOL capabilities without fowler flaps , without slats ... Just a lightweight super cub with a strong 320 , optimized prop for max takeoff power .... and yet it hauls ... extreme back country capable .... What it does is it tells us we can have killer capable back country machine without blowing the bank ... I wonder if you purposely choose this rout to show us this ...show us how its done

  • @vanwest4198
    @vanwest4198 Před 3 lety

    Nice cub, well I figure with your experience your the person to ask, why did you go with the O-320 and standard wings? Compared to Bushwacker it seems so tame! A O-320 with 10:1 compression makes 160-170 hp? at 2700rpm? Wide deck? And why you choose to go with the squared off Javron wings? AND one last question at least for now, the extended gear, are they one of the options in the Javron kit or did you fabricate them? Thanks ahead of time and for the videos.

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  Před 3 lety +6

      Well that is a lot to comment on but I will give it ago. I built a cub before this one that was Lycoming O-360 with 10-1 pistons, 84/43 1p235 propeller. It had a big wing with big double slotted flaps, more angle of incidence and I was a little disappointed with it in gusty conditions. It did fly slower for sure, probably and honest 6 mph slower. It was a great airplane and I really have nothing bad to say about it. I wanted to build an O-320 equipped cub for a few years now. It is hard to beat the handling characteristics of a stock wing. I also tried to build this one lighter then my last cub. The last cub was a wide body Javron and it weighed 1194. A lot of that additional weight was the big wing with double slotted flaps and aluminum ailerons which were also custom. It is all a compromise, fly slower add weight. There are some things that make an airplane fly slower that make sense and some don't for my kind of flying.
      The current 0-320 is a wide deck and it turns 2700 on take off. I would say it is around 170 hp. If feels much more sporty then the big wing cub I had but either one will do the job.

    Really nice build! Did you use Airframes aluminum struts? It looks like they are unpainted. If so have you seen any signs of corrosion? Thanks

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes they are Airframes, before the STC was bought by them but same thing. All the blocks that are riveted are anodized so they will not corrode. The strut material is still bare. Not to worried, pretty hard to paint the inside. I guess you could slosh them with primer inside. They are not sealed so they can drain. If you lived in salt air I would paint but otherwise it is just extra weight:))

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  Před 3 lety +2

      I did the 4" wider on the Super Cub before this one. If you are a big guy the 4" is nice or do need to haul a little more gear. I am small at 5'7" and 155 pounds so the stock fuselage is good.

    any reason you went with superflite vs other fabric? I'm a complete newbie when it comes to recovering but planning my first project - likely rebuild a champ to experimental. Also did you go dark on top of the wings/tail for sun/frost removal in cold months?

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  Před 3 lety +2

      I have tried almost all of them now. I have a friend in Alaska that is using Superflight on his Cub and said it was less steps in the process so I figured I would give it a try. He liked it and said it was holding up well. I think it is a good process and probably a little faster then Polyfiber but they are all time consuming. Use what you know and it will all be good.
