My Grandma used to tat...that was the one needle craft she didn't have a chance to share with me. I have a few pillowcases with her tatting on the edges - they're so lovely and priceless! This video was so fun! Thanks for sharing your talents!

Love to tat both with needle and shuttle. It's the only lace making that hasn't had a machine to duplicate the art, so you know it's ALWAYS handmade.

I have tatted both with the shuttle and the needle. I don't do too much shuttle work anymore because my thumbs don't work properly now. But it is beautiful and I do enjoy it.

I have soooo many yards of my Grandmother’s handmade tatting. Several colors, some variegated. She passed in 2005, but my mother, before her own death in 2001 got a lot of her stuff for me! I also have 5 bags of handmade yo-yos. I dint know how to tat but I have three or four shuttles

Wish I had seen this before I threw some scraps in the garbage. And you know when you hear that little voice say no save it save it and you don't. Hahahah. I just disassembled a bunch of levis and threw them in a vac bag and put in my garage until I can get to them. I use to have my car in there but at this rate I may have to move my car. Hahah so I may start making theses and add to my levi jackets. Thanks Julia for you're great ideas.
Speaking of tatting - my aunt used to tat with a shuttle and tried to teach me how to do it. I couldn't get the sequence of movements right, but years later as an adult I tried learning needle tatting. Found it much easier to do. However it is done, creating those lacy loops takes alot of time - you are right to hoard yours! Enjoyed your tutorial and what beautiful results!
Hi Dianne, I recently tried the needle tatting and I found it easier. I still find it a bit tedious. I think I'll stick to finding it at thrift stores and flea markets :)

My mother did tatting. She made some beautiful pieces. I have all of her tools and thread but I know I don’t have the patience to learn. I love looking through the box she kept it all in. Great memories of her. I will save all of her pieces. Can’t bring myself to use any of it in a project. Or maybe I just haven’t found the right project to use it in yet!

I haven't tatted with a shuttle but I did learn how to do needle tatting through you-tube videos.... It is super easy and nice to take with you... There are only really two stitches you use.... Anyone can do needle tatting!!! You should try it!
Hi, A couple others have commented on needle tatting. I had never heard of it before. A good thing to put on my 2018 bucket list!
I learned how to needle Tat . The shuttle looked so hard but then never tried it.
I have bins of laces, ribbons scraps and have even thrown in some of my tatting in it.

You can also use the fabric scraps as filler for pillows/etc.

Great video sweetie. I have made some but only with long fibers. No snippets & I have been wanting to make some. I really love the stamping. It just gives the trim that little extra interest. TFS Toodles
Hi, Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. The stamping really does add a lot. I use a permanent waterproof ink pad so it can get wet. I have been doing some "themed" ribbon and have added it to my shop. It is such a great way to use up scraps etc. Happy creating- Julia
I have done needle tatting. It wasn't too hard, but it is time consuming. I taught myself a few years ago when I was laid up after an operation.
What I do with my pieces of colorful yarn and snippets: Every spring, I take a bunch of them, make piles and tie them together with a ribbon. I then take them out and hang/tie them in my trees in my backyard. Birds come, and you can see where they have taken them out and taken them to their nests. You can see nests with my snippets in them. The little birds just love them, and it is so fun to look up and see your yarn flying in the tree. This suggestion was used one year on The Fons & Porter sewing tv show.💕

I do both shuttle and needle tatting I love using it in mixed-media projects. Thanks for the inspiration in making fabric trim. I also recently began stamping fabric when I want a very specific theme, I use Stazon ink.
I just ran across my aunt’s tatting shuttles while doing my sewing room declutter- it’s on my bucket list! Do you use crochet thread or is there a specific tatting thread? I love my Stazon ink too!

I love this idea! I have an old clear glass candy jar full of bits and pieces of ribbon (and some tatting too!).
My first thought was that these would be cute as ribbons on gifts instead of paper ribbon, especially with brown craft paper instead of wild colored gift wrap. Or even hair ribbons for little girls. It might inspire the receiver save it and reuse it too.

I needed some snowflakes for a wall quilt I was making, I tried crocheting them, but was not happy with the look. I looked up tatting on Y.T. I found a fabulous tutorial on needle tatting. SO much easier than using a shuttle. The snow flakes I made came out really well and were great fun to make. Interesting ribbon tutorial, I would never of thought of it. Oh boy, do I have the supplies to use. Wendy

I tried shuttle tatting and was all fingers and thumbs, I had a hard time finding tatting needles so I bought doll needles and ground the points off with emery paper. It does a great job. Now the needles are readily available. Good luck! Wendy.
This is an interesting idea. I keep my itty scraps(small stuff) in a large gallon sized pickle jar , I add to it every time I sew. Good way to use them. Thanks

I did tatting a long long time ago, it is a lost art, I didn’t stick with, however I did it long enough to know how tedious it is. It is beautiful!

My mother-in-law-can tat, because she was raised in a church where the ladies wore small tatted headpieces when they prayed. I should ask her to show me how!

I am an experienced needleworker in many areas. I took tatting lessons from a wonderful tatter. If you can buy it, don't even think of doing it yourself. It is VERY difficult.

Hi, you had mentioned that you would like to Tat. if you can't get the hang of shuttle tatting try needle tatting. It's easier. I have loved needle tatting for years and now think maayyybe, I can move up to the shuttle. Worth a try

I tried tatting years ago. I took a class. I made the world's largest ball of knots - none of which looked like tatting. These days, tourists stop by to have a picture taken in front of this roadside attraction.

I might have been exaggerating a bit by claiming to have made the largest ball of randomly and peculiarly knotted string as a result of my disastrous failure at tatting. Still it was pretty impressive. But your question did prompt me to Google an answer for you. The world's largest ball of string is in Valley View, Texas. It measures 13ft. 2.5in. diameter and 41ft. 6in. at the circumference. Now THAT'S an impressive tatting failure!
