Prog = how long and how many changes can a song have without it getting boring
Periphery = prog + chonk + whatever vocal style Spencer feels like doing atm
From personal experience (and many would agree with me), the cleans sections start to grow more on you over time. Some people actually start liking them more than the heavy bits. I was the same the first time I heard PI and PII!

I HATED Spencer’s vocals at first, but the guitars hooked me and now Spencer is one of my favorite vocalists.

@@izzate7 Yeah same, I literally opted for the instrumental versions half the time at first. But eventually recognised Spencer's ability to cut through it all. Especially when I realised he comes up with the melodies after the other music is made. Usually the song structure works around the melody, but I guess Periphery do it backwards.
Although it seems to be more of a cohesive effort nowadays, so maybe they really think about the vocals simultaneously now! Guess we'll find out when the documentary is out!
It almost seems like Spencer goes with his 3rd or 4th melody choices which makes an abrasive first couple listens. Wildfires chorus hits so much harder now that I finally caught how it fits in
hey just so you know, the part you liked at 7:51 is actually a part of a video game soundtrack called "hades" which misha really loves.
As soon as I saw the title Zagreus I could only think of Hades! Hell yeah

Periphery is extremely talented. They are very much a musicians band. You really need to check out most of their catalog. It’s plenty.
So prog metal usually has to deal with odd time signatures, polyrhythms, jazz chord progressions. Just a lot of musical aspects going on. Plus a lot of prog bands dont usually follow the verse/chorus/verse/chorus progression(in some songs they might tho). And if you're wondering, Djent is a style of prog metal and it originated from that style and the band Meshuggah are the basically the founding fathers of djent, tho they didnt really have a name for it then, and thats where Periphery came in and called it "Djent". And yes, Meshuggah is a prog metal band. Hopefully this helped out for ya man :)
Really enjoyed your takes on Periphery, especially for a 1st time listener bc their complexity and unwillingness to obey traditional song structure can be difficult to comprehend initially.
For their heaviest songs (in no particular order) try...... The Walk, Zyglrox, Four Lights, The Bad Thing, Hell Below, The Price is Wrong, Habitual Line-Stepper, Prayer Position, Reptile, Blood Eagle, CHVRCH BVRNER, and Lune (nah, just kidding on that one lol)
When i listened to periphery for the first time i hurt my brain, now that i play guitar and have listened to more of their music i appreciate their insane talent
Seen these guys maybe 15 years ago with Job for a cowboy, Cattle Decapitation, Veil of Maya, Circle of Contempt, and Animals as Leaders. Didn’t realize what I was witnessing then. They’re amazing.

I view Prog as more of an approach to music as opposed to a specific sound. It generally incorporates odd/poly meters and rhythms, less common keys and modes(preferential to jazz type chords and progressions), more elaborate song structures, and elements or even mimicry of other genres. To me Prog Metal is the most interesting because I really like heavy music, but I also enjoy listening to other genres as well. When it’s achieved successfully it’s the best of both worlds.
The cool thing, in my opinion, about both these songs is that they incorporate the newer style of their previous record Hail Stan with the style from their probably best known album Juggernaut. Both tracks have musical reprises of songs from Juggernaut incorporated into the structure of these new songs. I think they pulled it off well. Glad to see you exploring them! You’re reactions are similar to mine when I first heard Periphery. Pleasant confusion and intrigue.

It’s hard to say what prog is other than pushing boundaries of ability and songwriting and being able to tell a good story, be it through the lyrics - or lack thereof - and/or the music. Too many variables already! It generally tends to have quite an intellect to it with the song forms and structures, especially time signatures and practical use of theory. Again, it’s hard to say and comes down to your perception of it, comparing it to other forms of music might help conceptualise it, but also prolonged listening to it might also have the added effect of appreciating other forms of music because of the sheer amount of musical elements and techniques it throws into the mix by its nature 🙈 I can kinda nerd out when it comes to prog because I’ve been listening to it for a decent 15 years or so 😅
I’d like to think it’s taking everything music has to offer and handing that back to you in a way that’s, if not as easy to digest as many forms of music, very mentally stimulating and literally requires repeated listens to unpack ✨
Periphery is very much a musician’s band. People who don’t have trained ears may have a tough time following Spencer’s melodies or the band’s seemingly out of time riffs (even though they’re usually just 4/4 or 6/8). But what makes these guys so amazing is that after a few listens, you’ll start to realize “oh wait that actually fits and flows.” Definitely one of the most challenging bands to listen to but for me, a musician, listening to them is an absolute dream.
I find the clean parts add contrast to the heavy parts helping them hit harder. If something is just heavy the whole time it all blends together for me and I can get bored. It depends on the song though
Blood eagle, church burner, and follow your ghost come to mind for heavy periphery. Would also recommend reptile.
Meshuggah is very progressive and without them there wouldn't be periphery, they've always said that meshuggah is their biggest influence
A serious try at a description of prog:
Prog Metal says it in the name. Progressive Metal. It tries to "progress" metal. trying out new stuff. Stuff that has never been done before. a lot of stuff that was prog is now being used by regular metal musicians, which means the progression has kicked in. some "trying out new stuff" can also lead to completely new genres. like in this case djent, which many people say is "progressive-metalcore" (obv also influences from meshugah).
and btw, as a prog enjoyer, Zagreus is actually much better then Wildfire to me. It feels more rooted and i like the cleans almost more. The cleans somehow feel darker then regular screams in some cases (still love the growles for accentation to go just that bit further beyond). Maybe a new way to progress metal or make a new genre? heavy af but clean vocals with screams for accents only? :)
hopefully now you have kind of an idea what prog is
and yea that means that there is no one way in particular to progress a genre (why they all sound different). But it is mostly done with a lot of Music theory background just because its required to mix and match different genres or create new ones and still make it work.
Prog is something so much more. This song is brutal and BEAUTIFUL. THIS IS PROG! Prog is pushing the envelope, moving forward, doing something tomorrow that you didn’t do today. Dream Theater is Progressive. VERY PROGRESSIVE. All the odd time signatures, and Idk, maybe putting a jazz Segway as the bridge. I could go on all day….I’m not a fan of the “woah woahs” either. Mesghugga is barely PROG BABY!!!!

Glad to see you digging the new singles. If you wanna hear some of their more straightforward prog metal sounding tracks, I definitely recommend checking out Scarlet, Absolomb, Lune, and Garden in the Bones to name a few
Judging by his taste of the vocals, those are probably the songs he would dislike most! Try Blood Eagle, CHVRCH BVRNER, Zyglrox, Insomnia, Ragnarok, The Price is Wrong, Hell Below, The Bad Thing.
If/when you get used to the melodic clean sections (or Spencer's voice in general), then try the ones Viridian just mentioned. Although Periphery is a band that should really be listened to album by album, since they usually have a cohesive story line or connected themes (Musically and Lyrically).
Prog is music that is actively evolving and changing form as time progressess, hence why we call it progressive.
only unified thing in prog is being able to do whatever you want like i think their guitarist said that he likes prog especially dream theater because he can go into a different genre mid way through and its cool and not a problem and if they stay rooted in metal its also cool
if you havent checked it out Misha and Mark have an instrumental side project called Haunted Shores and they released an album in 2022 and i think youd really enjoy it as its much darker and is pretty much a blackened version of periphery as Mark is a pretty big black metal fan and god damn is it so good
The nature of the word progressive is that it’s always pushing forward and changing. So it’s not necessarily something to be pinned down and defined as a “genre” with predictable characteristics. Basically it means weird and out of the ordinary. So expect interesting things.

Gotta listen to Ne Obliviscaris newest single Equus. Great Prog song. You still won't know what prog is. The band has a good amount of black metal elements of that helps.

Spencer's cleans are a very acquired taste, however when they do finally click with you they become your favorite parts of the songs

instead of, picking an obvious example here, Pop, where it basically just goes -a b a b c a- or something of the sort.
Progressive's point is literally to progress the song instead of only having like 3 parts played mutlple times each. In prog, every repeated part has differences than before, and this ends up with, over time, prog bands getting into some weird time signatures, syncopation, etc etc etc
