Firefly was a sci-fi Space Western series created by Joss Whedon. It ran for 14 episodes on Fox (though three episodes never aired), premiering on September 20, 2002. The series was concluded in 2005 with the feature film Serenity (not to be confused with the hilariously bad 2019 Matthew McConaughey film of the same name). Starring Nathan Fillion as Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds, Gina Torres as Zoe Alleyne Washburne, Alan Tudyk as Hoban "Wash" Washburne, Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra, Adam Baldwin as Jayne Cobb, Jewel Staite as Kaylee Frye, Sean Maher as Simon Tam, Summer Glau as River Tam, Ron Glass as Shepherd Derrial Book, Mark Sheppard as Badger, Michael Fairman as Adelai Niska, Christina Hendricks as Yolanda / Saffron / Bridget, David Krumholtz as Mr. Universe, Sarah Paulson as Dr. Caron and Chiwetel Ejiofor as The Operative.

these kind of shows rarely make money (in the short term) . I screamed at my sister why her studio decided to make a movie from a failed TV series. She said we know we would lose money, but we really wanted to convince Joss Wheddon to do some TV series for us, and so we were willing to eat the loss. Lot of our classics are cult favorites. They don't make money , until they get syndicated. Battlestar galactica, the reboot, was a loser, but the studio kept it going , because it was well reviewed and anchored the entire sci fi network. And don't get me wrong I loved the movie, But economically it's a hard sell.

One of my favorite memories is tied to Firefly.
I parented two girls into adults, all the while trying my best to get them interested in certain sci-fi shows with limited success. (DS9 stuck; Star Wars did not) One winter, I needed to go out and I grabbed this toboggan with the earflaps and pom-pom, went out to do what I needed to do, came back in, saw my wife and girls around the dining room table and said, "Hey, guess who I am?"
    Eldest: Pippi Longstocking?
    Me: What? No! Jayne!
Eldest: The Hero of Canton? I don't think so.

It is easier to write the way to live than conduct a way of living that is crystal. Many authors, scientists, politicians, actors showing us how many of them are business driven creatures as the whole industry is. Firefly is the ideal I dream about but only few of us will be able to realize it. I know one person whose family is like a mini Firefly crew. It is a marvel to watch them. While one might think that Mal let him (Jayne) live because he has a soft spot for him, he really only does so, to prove a point and to keep a reliable crewmate on his side...Jayne will actually do anything for the buck, however he's also efficient, as the job was done cleanly if not for the betrayal of the alliance officer. They didn't know the Tams were about to be burned... but that also didn't know they had made friends and played nice either so the crew still would be mounting a rescue from kidnappers.
It's a bugbear of mine that reviewers shout pothole or convenience when they just didn't listen to the dialogue or the plot.
For example, seeing the Alliance as a big bad guy when Inara and Book and Simon are all alliance. The alliance is a Utopia being constructed. It will fail probably but there are strong reasons to support it. In a system that has rich billionaires enacting their rape fantasies on whole moons and sadistic mud plantation owners there is a reason for a civilising unification war... even if it fails as it succeeds.

Bushwacked's ending was very logical and quite satisfying. Yes, Alliance won't let Serenity go, but it wasn't the Alliance that made that call. It was the cruiser's commander - a decent man with certain preconcieved notions that push him into the villains' territory. He didn't "try" to pin the Reavers' atrocities on Mal and the crew, he simply didn't believe in Reavers (having never encountered them), and so he made a logical next step. We clearly see that he learned a thing or two.

Even the lamest episode (Heart Of Gold) services character development between Mal and Inara.
The scene where Inara is acting like everything is cool after Mal sleeps with her friend and it smash cuts to Inara crying, I don't know if I've made it through that scene with dry eyes.
One thing not mentioned in this video is the whole "secrets" aspect that was written into the show.
Every character had a secret that was known only to the writers and the actor playing them.
Inara was terminally ill, incurable. She was riding out her last days. If you watch the whole series again knowing this, it's a bit of a different animal. Watch Morena's performance in "Out Of Gas" for the best glimmers into her secret. Also, it's why she leaves the ship for (I forget where, was it Ariel?) for a "routine medical checkup", ostensibly related to Companion work.

My (48M) daughter (22F) and I spent the better part of the summer and this fall watching ALL of Doctor Who (Eccleston through Whitaker), finishing JUST in time for the 60th. As we were finishing things off, I was like, "Well...which fandom next?" as we watched Supernatural last fall through most of spring this year. I decided on Firefly cuz it was short.
In less than a week, we plowed through ALL of the show and even watched Serenity the movie and she loved every minute of it. That is, until "Watch me soar...". I lessened the blow when it was coming by saying, "Sweetie, I'm just saying now...I'm sorry."
"Wait...someone's gonna DIE NOW???" It took at least a solid two minutes for her to pick up her jaw. Then, as the Reapers were hacking their way in, "OMG, do ANY of them survive???"

What I do like about the Operative at the end is that they beat him by showing him a moral atrocity that he can't wave away with a smug Ends-Justify-The-Means speech. He thinks of himself as a human terminator kill-bot, only to then have no option but to go "oh, wow, that's messed up. Don't want anything to do with that."

It's not just the moral implications otherwise he wouldn't kill. His whole operandi is based upon keeping federation secrets. Once the Miranda secrets are known to the whole galaxy, he has failed. This is why he let's them go. It's why he later tells Mal there is no place for him in the Federation. His reason for work/belonging is gone. I was surprised that Mal didn't ask him to join them. He kind of fits in with the crew tbh. He would be the one to fill Shepard Books place. Plus river would take him out if he so much thought of killing them.

"Heart of Gold" is what I consider to be the weakest of the series, and that villain is why. They wanted to go for an over-the-top cartoonishly sexist villain, and they ended up shoving all the sexist characteristics they could into one man, even though it makes for an extremely contradictory character. He's the "family man, pillar of the community who secretly sleeps with hookers," the "bloodline-obsessed, patriarchal, wives and children are the property of the husband/father," and the "women are subhuman and exist for my pleasure," all rolled into one, and these are all traits that do not go together.
