    I still love the grainy gritty look of these prerendered graphics, it’s got that texture you can find in oil paintings of the renaissance and with a surrealistic vibe like Salvador dalis paintings. Beautiful 🖼️

    Dude I gotta say I love your commentary. You actually have a really calming voice, which makes watching this great game more enjoyable. Keep up the great work.

    That little puzzle in the school is pure genius! One of the many highlights of Riven.

    The number system is actually base 25. You are right about the rotation, but this means that each number up to 24 has its own unique symbol (24 being the symbol for 4, turned 90 degrees, overlayed on the symbol for 4). After 24, you use two symbols (like we do after 9), which is the definition of a base 25 system. You can see this in Gehn's journal with the symbols for the 233rd Age, which are 9 and 8 (9 * 25 + 8 = 233). :-)

    Riven has background music in some places. I think the limited use of music in Myst games is just right, it adds to the atmosphere and realism.

    If I had to ride that tiny bar up to the top of the gallows, I'd be pissing myself no more than 10 feet off the platform.

    If this place really existed, I really would not be willing to put my hand in that water tube to pull that pin. I feel sorry for the stranger that he always gets the dirty jobs.

  • @Dilandau3000
    @Dilandau3000  Před 12 lety +2

    No, he's only unconscious, and disappears later. Even if this isn't him, Cho appears very clearly in at least one of the bad endings.

    For some bloody reason once I get up the gallows I can't return down to get my train. Which sucks, because I couldn't get to the school to learn to count :D Fortunately this kind human being created a lets play for us to watch :D

    Thanks! I do my best. One of the reasons I chose this game is because I know so much about the backstory of Myst so I actually have something to talk about. :-)

    If you watch the third video, Sven points out the body. But if you return later the body is gone, and the man returns in one of the bad endings, indicating he was merely knocked unconscious.

    Isn't it a bit reduntant to build an underwater rail to transport people across a small lake, and only have one train riding on it? I mean, wouldn't it have been a zillion times easier to just have a canoe or three? And doesn't the single train that runs on it get crowded when all the children have to go to school?
    Come to think of it, pretty much all transportation in the Myst series is overcomplicated like that. For instance the elevator in Tomahna or Sirrus' anti-gravity ship.

    It's funny because there were at least talks to have Myst island built at Disney. The idea died out because of the complexity of the job and the "pay for itself" price of admission resulting from it.

    speaking of "sea world", richard van der wende was a production designer / art director for various disney features, most notably aladin. if you compare the production artwork to riven, you kinda get the notion. especially if you look at the golden domes etc.

    I'm not sure the Number game is rather macabre. Hangman/Galgenmännchen teaches spelling as well.

    • @TheAngelmaat
      @TheAngelmaat Před 7 lety

      I don't think so. How many school children nowadays see an actual hanging? Those kids were actually seeing Gehn execute people by whark.

    once again, because Dilanau opened the wooden idol too early, he was able to close the cage too early; if you didn't know to pull the secret switch down in the rainforest, you'd get to the cage, and wouldn't be able to get up the cage without going a bit of a round about route to learn what the secret switch is for the wooden idol in the rainforest.

    The guy who rescues you at the beginning (most often referred to as Cho, since that's the first thing he says) is visible over the side of the chasm by the telescope right after you get out. Apparently he was killed and dumped off the side, so the prisoner here couldn't be Cho.

  • @annachibi2
    @annachibi2 Před 13 lety

    What a creepy way to teach kids their numbers. Only Gehn would have come up with something like that. XD

  • @Onychoprion27
    @Onychoprion27 Před 11 lety

    He may have been lowered gently. I doubt the Moiety would risk killing Cho (so called because of what he says upon first noticing the player in the cage) and he's Gehn's main minion. Gehn still has power over the population of Riven, and the Moiety care about the Rivenese, so they'd probably stay away from causing Gehn to harm the Rivenese vicariously. In my opinion.
    Or maybe the Moiety are leading the most pacifistic rebellion ever! :P

    I've played this little game over and over again too. What is the symbol of zero? I've noticed that the symbol for 6 is 5 and 1, 7 is 5 + 2, so if you want to make 20, do you know how is that one is made?

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja Před 8 lety

      +JeaneGenie Zero is just a dot in the middle of the box. 20 is the number 4 rotated a quarter-turn counter-clockwise. D'ni numerals are either base 25 with base 5 subdivisions or base 5 compressed into base 25.
