- At Purpose Built Moto, we take on new challenges to push our skills further. In this video, Tom shares his first experience with hydroforming to build a custom exhaust system for a 2008 Ducati GT1000. From fabricating the headers to hand shaping the mufflers, you'll see the entire process unfold.
Hydroforming, a technique using high-pressure water to shape metal, allowed us to create complex shapes and contours for the exhaust. Despite a few challenges, we learned a lot and achieved a unique design that enhances the bike's performance and appearance.

- Fabricating a 2-into-1-into-2 exhaust system
- Using hydroforming for creating custom mufflers
- Ensuring strong welds with back purge TIG welding
- Hand shaping and finishing techniques for a seamless look

The (full) famous quote "the customer is always right, in matters of taste" is about the nicest thing I could say about this particular bike. If you told me the owner was Arab, with a golden toilet, I wouldn't be surprised. Your craftsmanship is top notch, as always though, and a treat to watch!
Keep your pants on we haven’t even started the paintwork on this bike yet !
Last question is worth knowing the answer to, I'll ask Tom. And I do indeed own a solid gold toilet 😇
Will the heat off the exhaust next to the shock reservoir affect it? Or is that not an issue on this?
@@chrisj5110 we’ve left clearance between the two and the external muffler body won’t get all that hot. It will be fine

Nice job , did you cut a cross piece out of the frame to bring the pipe up behind the motor ? Those rear sets in gold look like cheap Chinese ones ? Still I have always loved that model Ducati 👍🇦🇺
@@chrisb9156 the frame has been modified to suit exhaust yes
As an older custom fabricator I’d advise against welding in a short sleeve shirt, the amount of skin damage I have on my arms and face (back then we’d hold the welding lense in our hands) it’s just not worth the inconvenience of wearing protection. 👍
