Hi there, Liron here!
Many seem to be obsessed with "what color to use".
In fact, I see many who are crippled by these types of decisions, whether before they begin their painting, or DURING the painting process.
This is completely counter-productive.
The goal of this video is to put color in a USEFUL CONTEXT, thus removing a lot of the worry people face.
To demonstrate this, Iâll paint the classic David sculpture using an extremely random assortment of colors, as well as the previous colors on my dirty palette's mixing areas.
To be fully honest, I DID develop a decently good intuition as to what colors work and how, and I am following very basic principles of composition, but I am using very random colors for most of this demo.
I hope you find it helpful! đđđŒ

When I stopped trying to get my colors to match almost exactly, I was able to put that time into something else and grow overall! I can come back to it later in my learning process of painting.
This works in part because all of the colirs used her3 are pretty desaturated. More saturated colors could clash easier; desaturated colors are easier to harmonize. There is a lesson about that on the Marco Bucci channel.
The theory that colors are not important and what's important is value has some merits, but such "muddy" colors are a specific case anyway.
He literally said that using too many bright colours can make it seem out of balance.
yesss! something about grays communicate haha it was a fun lesson and very helpful!
@@pilapila183 That's because he's not a colorist.
Yeah and that redish shadow doesn't look correct, it brings too much attention despite is not a saturated color
@@pilapila183 is the title and thumbnail clickbait then?
this is what artists need man. A dose of chill tf out
anyone who talks about color harmonies like its a cult and there are holy combinations that you must adhere to need to relax. In reality, there are so many possible color harmonies it's hard not to fall into one. I glean the biggest aspect of color theory is really about balance, and mostly of saturation. Saturation demands attention, so it's more "expensive." And then it gets worse when you have different saturated colors. Colors don't clash, their saturations do.
Your colors are balanced really well! That's why it works. It's mostly desaturated, but there are saturated colors. You also talked about balancing cold and hot colors, which was done well. Also, red-yellow-blue is like one of the most common color harmonies. (commonness isn't a bad thing) It's common because it's very pleasing!
Thank you so much đđ
Very happy this video serves the purpose I inteded it to đ
Timidness KILLS paintings. True. I am so insecure and fearful when I get down to it, and I can see it really, really hiders my work. This video inspired me to make mistakes and just be creative again. Thanks!
Shapes and shadowsâŠone of the best lessons I have learned.
Thank you so much for this. I am completely colourblind and have never had the ability to see any colour before, only black, white and shades of grey. I usually paint in colour anyways and just let whatever happens happen but recently I have been stuck in a rut fearing to use colour from hearing everyone constantly talk about colours one should *never* use together etc and as it is something I quite literally cannot comprehend no matter what I do it overwhelms me to the point of not being able to paint for fear of clashing colours and ruining a piece. This video was refreshing and you are a magnificent artist - what a beautiful piece!
Is your art upload anywhere? I'll love to see that!
Just the fact that you are colorblind makes me want to see what you create. Super interesting
There is no wrong way to create art
art is subjective and the possibilities are endless
So create art for the sake of creating art
There is no wrong way
It's so interesting that you are a colorblind painter I am also. It's quite rare for a woman to be colorblind, less than 1% of women are. I think it gives us a unique perspective
Thank you so so much đđ
There seems to be a substantial number of people who follow me who are color blind.
It always makes me happy to see the moment one figures out - colors aren't everything!
In fact, in my experience one's uniqueness in seeing the world leads to more interesting, and more PERSONAL art.
âLook at this mudââŠI laughed out loud! Your mud is beautiful!! Also loved the comment about it not mattering about what the colour is if you get the values right⊠fabulous tutorial!
You can definitely get bogged down trying to make an exact copy of your source. It's a good idea to treat your painting as a version rather than a copy.
If you want to play around with keeping the paper wet try a silicone mat. Spray the mat, pop on the paper and wet the top. I love your art keep it up!
That warm colour on the cheek is dreamy: it adds an element of context. Love it!
Absolutely first class demo. Very good topic. Not only did you address the topic very well, but you integrated many other points. Your three-way screen showing speaker, pallet and demo is perfect, and the audio quality superb. Thanks for your great and engaging posts!
Wonderful, I appreciate your instruction re varied colours.
totally agree. color only matters in advertising and graphic design, not realist painting.
This is so helpful! I have a pad of arches hot pressed paper and I never liked it. But I also donât want to waste expensive paper, so I just put it aside, hoping someday I can figure out how to use it other than making some cards. And then here comes Liron, with this wonderful tutorial showing me how to use hot pressed paper to achieve the desired effects. I enjoyed every minute of the video and absolutely loved the final result! Thank you!! đ
P.S. Iâm never obsessed with matching colors or getting the same colors as the teacher is using (phew!) But I can still remember how shocked I was when watching a video by Stan Miller, where he was using some really âcrazyâ colors to create beautiful portraits. That was really eye-opening to me. My problem with colors is that I can never get enough of them...I was trying to do a âNo-Buy 2022â but I couldnât make it through half a year đ
I was also trying to use up my older paints and not buy any this year. Then I saw the prices going up so fast, I had to grab more tubes of M Graham paints before they end up $25 each.
And if you donât use all your HP paper with watercolours, it is excellent for charcoal and pastel drawings. It has such a âvelvetyâ texture đđŒ
@@ubimelibiapes333
What paper are you talking about? Can you give me the full name? HP equals?????!
@@monicaparson6118 My comment was to Jia Lu who wanted to use her Arches HP pad, but for the use with pastel or charcoal you could use any HP paper as long as itâs not too smooth. Saunders Waterford makes more affordable paper than Arches, Winsor & Newton too, also Carson. Fabriano makes HP paper that has 50% cotton in it, thatâs more affordable than 100% Cotton. It depends on which papers are available in your countryâŠ.
My brother wants me to do a portrait of him from a photo. (Itâs mostly beard) I donât really DO photos, but since Iâve been learning loose painterly style, Iâm tempted to give it a try. Your instruction in this video is inspiring! Thx!!
Wow what an eye opening tutorial! I will never tell my class to clean their palette again! This is an exercise I would love to get them to do! NB just bought 3 of your books on Amazon - keep up the wonderful work you do. Love from đŹđ§
Wow thank you so much Heather!! đđđŒđđŒ Canât express how much I appreciate it!
Your explanation of what to do is always so helpful. Going to have to practice.
Iâm not obsessed but with colors I can feel more realistic since I always drawn from imagination
Beautiful! That drawing is on point too..
Beautiful. Vibrant painting. Thank you. Yes I'm one who struggles with timidity. Hope to change that soon. You are an imspiration.
Youâre just ignorant of colour theory. Go and purchase a colour pallet.
Your content quality is constantly improving to the point that I see a meteoric rise in your future. Thx so much for this.
What I learned trough the year's: Control your Shapes/Construction/Proportion and Values and you will be golden đ
Thanks for tips on hot press paper too! I need to explore it again.
I see too that the surface tension of the wet bottom side keeps it flat against the board
I loved this video. Thank you so much! The way you paint is so fluid and beautiful đ that's what I'm slowly trying to achieve with watercolors :)
This is amazing portrait and lesson!! Million thanks for sharing. I was scared to try andI'm obsessed with right wrong colors but after this I can't wait to try it
Colors are very important simply because they inherently carry some quantity of light. If you make up a painting with not much care about color, you can easily end up either with no contrast between highlight and shadow or too much contrast.
Watercolor paintings are simply... fascinating! You never really know where they are taking you đđč
Du Àr toppen! Du tÀnker pÄ allt!
Thank you! đ Doing my best â„
I almost exclusively use hot press! I think itâs misunderstood and underrated!!đ
Wow! Iâve been wanting to wet both sides of the paper for awhile but was waiting for the right subject! This is it! Fantastic! Thanks for the great tutorial!
You're an excellent teacher. I always learn so much from you.
Great advice! You've inspired me to loosen up and relax about my color choices. Thanks :)
I have hot press and getting dark and even wash is so hard gave up on watercolor. But going to give it a go with your techniques for hot press thanks so much first time ive heard about these techniques!
Iâve had the same experience!!
Donât give it, it really is a matter of technique. First water or very wet wash - then darks wet in wet (: And gradual layers if necessary.
You can do this!
@@LironYan thanks! Yep going to try it out
I find this so very helpful. Disregarding colors and focusing on values is a struggle for me. I will definitely practice this approach. Thank you!
Ah I love your content! You are helping me take the fear out of my art! Thinking of doing your course. It would be pretty fun if you had some skillshare classes too đ
Thank you so much Lisa đđđŒ
I considered doing SkillShare before, may end up doing it in the future, weâll see
Lovely! Beautiful workđ»
I mostly work with colored pencils myself but I intend to try watercolors soon. Mainly start with watercolor pencils and pastels that I have and move on from there.
Glad I found your page Liron. Long timeđđ€đŒ
Thank you so much! âșïžđđŒ Long time indeed! Youâll love watercolor
and I took that personal.
You're just validating what I've been telling my teachers for years! Thank you! Keep you palette clean my butt, there is a color here I don't remember making and its pretty.
Thank you so much!
Wow...hot press...very nice flow ...so style result... your own style appear....kind of this one too...tk you maestro
this painting turned out beautifully!
Liron, this is a stunning painting! Your drawing is amazing, and without a good drawing I'm not sure a good painting could be produced. Like some others have said, I have hot pressed paper but don't know how to create an image on it. Really, this is a stunning work of art. I just love it.
I struggle with fear and I know exactly what you mean the less you worry about it the nicer the painting is Iâve experienced it but I fall into the trap of fear
Thank you so much for this video. I obsess over the colors. It has literally caused me to pause my art altogether.
Thank you for that perspective. It seems very freeing.
excellent demo thank you!
That was a really great tutorial, thanks
Thank you so much! Iâve been struggling with portrait work and flow of just that, color.
ÂĄQuĂ© vĂdeo tan fantĂĄstico! ÂĄEnhorabuena y muchas gracias! What a fantastic video! Congratulations and thank you very much!
Amazing ! đ
Cool method with a wonderful creative design đđđ
Wow this is awesome , loved watching the process đ
Superb demo. Really appreciate your effort, skill and communication, Liron. Thanks for posting!
Thanks!
painting is a mental game
Fabulous!!! Just this afternoon I decided to get out one of my old but huge plastic palettes. My painting area shrunk a decade ago when I moved my room, but I have not been enjoying painting! I've been using small metal tins with pans, trying to make the best of it but my enjoyment has been missing! I am positive that it is because there is no large mixing space!
Stunning. Beautiful result and process
Great lesson - Color really is the thing most artists struggle with.
Great video!!! Youâre a great teacher!
Another amazing video. Thank you! I started out with watercolor using only hot press, then switched to cold press. While I feel like the former is more modern-looking bc it is smooth, I feel like the latter absorbs the color better. The water and paint donât seem to fully sink into hot press paper as, imo.
Simply great class !âŠđđ»đđ»đđ»đđ»
I love this! It totally glows! Thank you so much for sharing.
Bellissimo David! Such a complexity, thank you!
Very cool đ
Thank you for showing this đ
The video I'm looking for 8-) Thank you â„ïžâ„ïž
Thank you, it's really cool to learn this.
My palette used to be cleaned after every session, but now Iâve watched too many of your videos and realize it doesnât matter. Thanks!
thank you!
This came out beautifully
I had so many complexes about painting....bcz of that I tried only pencil, ofcource i didn't have enough confident to paint it...but now I got a different intuition , the right one...thank u so much sir...đđ
Thank you so much Liron for yet another excellent video đ Iâm not obsessed with colors, I just go with whatever comes, but itâs how you paint very wet on hot press that really grabs me. Iâm definitely going to give this a try!
I had always dislike the way I color things, I stop drawing painting when I learned I had a red and green color deficiency, but this video is giving me itch to try again.
Yesterday I felt like want to watch one of your post but I forget the name of your chanal so I went through all my subscribtions đ glad you post beautiful and interesting as always thank you.
Art is subjective, do what you want however you want I say;)
Nice work!
Much respect. Funny thing: I hate watercolor painting; although⊠I love pen and ink stuff⊠odd I know, Iâm an artist, what can I say lol.
I picked up a handful of amazing ideas that go hand in hand with inks.
Awesome video! Thanks!
Haha I get it! I really dislike opaque âdrierâ media! Feels too slow for me đ
But I love pen and ink.
Happy I could somehow help with ink đđ
Well, what's also interesting is that the subject matter is monochrome, which alleviates the brain having to navigate around colors as they would exist in another choice, be it a still Ife or landscape. Many artists throughout history have worked in sepia and other monochromatic palettes. One of the 'hazards' of painting today is that art supply industries push - and have available - an obscene number of colors. The more experience one has, the more willing one will find oneself accepting the results like the one in the video.
Doesnt really apply when painting color lightning scenes or space
Such an amazing art work love decorations
love it
It's beautiful.
Its a great picture. Looks good on hotpress
This is AWESOME. Loved it đ
Îeautyful job sir... thanks for the help..
Hello needed to see this and need to watch it on replay! I worry far too much about getting the "right" colours and it definitely hampers my painting and then I have no flow. It is a big problem for me.
Am I the only one having anxiety over the underpainting? The randomness stresses me out even though I know the end result will be amazing
Great insight and advice and tutorial. Definitely helps to ease some anxieties to approaching and focusing on staying creative. I've been learning how to use gouache for a few months now and while there are resources for gouache here and other places, I find that there is also quite a bit to learn from artists such as yourself! Thank you for sharing your approach and insight. I've been painting in a bristol vellum sketchbook and a cold press pad. So far they're fine, albeit I just purchased a hot press pad and look forward to learning it's advantages and limitations. Thank you for your mind and direction! It's always worth hearing what you have to say, even for a misfit gouache artist. Cheers!
Take a drink every ti he says âto stay super organized â
I think learning color in not for beginners, value comes first.
Timidity, not timidness. Nice painting.
Haha thanks đ
Dude, I'm never obsessed with colors, I am obsessed with values. I improve slightly, but they always seem to be well.. too saturated, everything is vibrant, and it looks like mud mixed with coffee.
Got it! (:

"Colours don't matter"
Uses colours to paint a bnw picture
đđ
You are going to make me try hot press again. I just couldnât get it.
Me too!
Iâve never listened to people who tell me not to use âmuddyâ colors.
I love my murky colors.
Excellent video! I'm curious how you keep that paper from curling when it's not taped, and you are re-wetting so much? I looked through your videos for your technique but I couldn't find it.
@Charnell Jones I've gone so far as to pre-soak the whole page and still ended up with bacon if I don't use the tape. I suppose I don't try to do the whole thing as fast as possible, so it likely dries a bit in between washes. That's kind of what I'm getting at. Liron says it dried and he had to re-wet the whole thing.
@@Surai00 Hmmm interesting! I think the wooden board may help. It just sticks to it somehow. I will get the occasional curl, once it starts drying, but itâs not that bad and I simply keep painting.
I find that if I prewet both sides on the first wash, it kind of buckles less in following washes (:
after trying watercolor for some years i realised why the color is not so important factor in watercolor medium.
You see the most famous artists these days like Amit Kapoor, David Zbukvic etc m, their paintings never capture the exact coloration from the reference pictures; they just are focusing on lights and shadows and i have seen them using some really odd colors but still the painting turned out spectacular,Why? bcoz they aimed at composition, light and dark areas
In my opinion, watercolor is a medium where cool and warm color theory works
Its a beautiful medium
I'm a swarthy white dude. The whole race, skin color game doesn't benefit me whatsoever. But recognizing the truth of the situation is kind of important.
This is an excellent demo of the powerof value ans shapes Liron. I love it! One question though: after what it seems like your first wash you let the paint to dry completely befor starting to paint your second statements at min 4:43 ?? Big fan of your channel. Cheers
Yes! Exactly (: I let it dry fully đȘđš
Good stuff man..;)
