  • The Pace Report: "The Pharoah Sanders Tribute" featuring Azar Lawrence and Tomoki Sanders
On September 24, 2022, saxophonist Pharoah Sanders joined the ancestors. In his seven decades as a musician, Mr. Sanders was a disciple of John Coltrane. Before he became a leader, recorded with both John and Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Billy Higgins, and Norman Connors. His tenor saxophone playing style was known as "sheets of sound" in which incorporates his use of multi phonic techniques.
At the 52nd Annual International African Arts Festival held at Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn, a tribute to Pharoah Sanders, was one of the headlining performances featuring NEA Jazz Master Bill Hart, George Cables, Azar Lawrence, Nat Reeves, and Tomoki Sanders. Tomoki is the son the Mr. Sanders.'
In this special edition of The Pace Report, you'll see special performances from this tribute concert as well as interviews with the musicians.

It's a beautiful thing that Tomoki continues on the path paved by his father.

Brian, your documentation work is so very important and i appreciate the legacy you captured. I was at the festival, but missed this important 'home going' performances for this brother whose work I could not pinpoint until now. Your service to his family and legacy for us to take in and understand is a generational wealth transfer. Thanks Bro'.

I love this, I'm from Brookly, saw Azar in Brooklyn with McCoy in 1970 and used to see Pharoah at The East all the time in the late 60's and early 70's. So many memories.

So sorry I could not be there. Festival is very dear to me. My father took me as a child to the very first graduate celebration of the Uhuru Sasa Shule, where Pharoah Sanders performed along with Leon Thomas. That yearly celebration grew into the African Street Festival and now the International Arts Festival. So glad that the legacy continues. Thank you Int'l African Arts Festival.
