So for those who are thinking of picking up this game, let me give a few disclaimers.
• The main Books (Survivor/GM Guide) are simply NOT formatted well. It will be difficult to piece together how everything works. My advice: get your hands on the “Intro Manual Booklet” and/or “Starter Rulebook”. These present the basic rules in a FAR more user friendly format.
• If you can find it, the “2nd Annual Volume Booklet” has a pretty detailed breakdown of a game session that is extremely helpful as an example of play.
• There is not much online aid for this game tbh. It’s not a dead game, they still are releasing new game aids such as cards and tokens, but it’s very much a no one’s holding your hands kind of game.
• The mechanics can get a little clunky if played straight by the book. I’d modify the game pacing to fit your table. For example, the game says GM should roll opponent checks. This is WAY too much dice rolling imo. I only have the players roll, and I use opponents to resolve success or failure narratively. Simplification of the rules is highly recommended in this game, even by the creators.
This game has A LOT to offer a table, but it requires at least one person to really dig into the rules and cobble together the system, and I blame this squarely on the disjointed nature of the main books. This game is the most detailed Zombie Survival TTRPG out there I believe, but the books let it down. Good luck.
You are correct sir. The rules are difficult for me to navigate. The pages are cluttered with too many symbols inserted into the paragraphs as if they were words and makes the rules hard to read. Even if I understand what the blue and red squares are, my brain has to continually switch between 'Language Reading Mode' and 'Symbol Deciphering Mode' and then replace the symbol with language in my own head, it makes it exhausting to read. The layout is visually cluttered with insets of different fonts and colors, including unnecessary handwriting fonts and scribbled post-it notes as if some of the rules explanations were afterthoughts. There are shorthand abbreviations and so many things compressed into acronyms that are not intuitive and make the book feel like you're reading instructions written half in English and half in a code that you were supposed to memorize back on page 1.
It feels like this book was written for a group of five or six friends who doubled as playtesters and they got no feedback from people who were asked to learn and play all of its systems without any prior knowledge of the cryptic language that was used to write it. Overall the presentation is a confusing cluttered mess and I find it unreadable (and therefore unlearnable).
It needs to be playtested and needs a whole new remastered edition to clean up it's presentation.
@@vikingshark2634Exactly! I ended up basically putting this game down permanently because I found myself having to write a small cheat sheet novel to try and distill the books into a workable system. I got pretty far with it before I just threw my hands up and walked away. As they say,
“The juice was not worth the squeeze.”
Everything you said about the books is completely true. If you were bound and determined to learn the system, some of their supplementary books are slightly more decipherable, but only slightly. And it’s a shame because the system itself had a few novel ideas but it gets lost in the horrible book. I should not have to read an entire page of small text just to find two or three CORE RULES that are barely distinguishable from the rest of the text. And don’t even get me started on the symbols. Terrible design, frustrating to read. It’s good to hear from someone else who tried to slog through these books and came to the same conclusions.
I wish I noticed this comment 5 months ago. Because everything you’ve said is exactly what I’ve gone through. You have to flip between the two books just to learn the basics of the game and how to make a character. It seems like a great system but so hard to learn
I want this game. Watched a session on Smosh Games, and realized how I can bring all my writing to life in a fun and interactive way!
Is it just me or is Outbreak Undead a bit complicated with its dice system?
Agreed
God forbid we risk venturing off the reservation of 40 year old standards.
The complexity along with systems like the exploding side and the ammo dice make interactions more unpredictable imo, seems like it would fit the feeling of the apocalypse where you cannot keep up with all the ways everything is going to shit.
Not complicated at all, actually if you can read and have basic understanding this should be straight forward for most people. If it is complicated I would say stick with easy card flipping games. Like any game the better the ability of the GM the easier the game should become after one session.
@@rycor9117 way to insult anyone who likes to keep game flow going and doesn't want to get bogged down in mechanics.
+1 vote for Becca Scott getting her own show to GM.
Glad to see the game got going past its first edition. I bought the original game, but found its rules to be a bit more awkward than say... All Flesh Must Be Eaten's.
She would indeed be a great game master. Thus she should run a game of this for game the game. After all, you can't always just have the creator run it.
Becca
Actually there is, XP is just short hand for experience, the foundation of knowledge and education. Gestalt however is just ARPG style Skill Points including the ability to spend them at will.
For those who find this game rather on the complicated side there's plenty of alternatives available. Check out All Flesh Must Be Eaten (Eden Studios), Rotworld (Goblinoid Games), Infected! (Immersion Studios), Z-land (Stormforge Productions) or Era: Survival (Shades of Vengeance).
Becca 👍🏽
Wait a second... clean clothes, dirtied skin... IS THIS A TIDE AD!?
Nah it's Fallout 4 Raider style in reverse :)
This confused me so bad lol really complicated system it feels to me
I'm here because of Becca...great fishing vest
Becca, gestahlt has a hard G. It's from the German (soft G on that one). FYI.
🖕🤓Actchually....nobody cares.
This may be a stupid question but why do they refer to them as a d5 when those are d6?
Seems interesting.
This definitely looks interesting, but I'd like to see it in action before I decide on trying it out myself. Is there a chance Becca can GM a session on Twitch?
TheRealDerohneNick check out We're Alive Frontier and you'll see it exactly in play!
Or honestly check out the celebrity D20 event with Satine that's also on Twitch.
They'll post a gameplay video on Thursday.
Thank you, Ivan! I found it, if anyone else wants to check it out: www.twitch.tv/videos/210120543
where does one find said personality test btw? I know this is a bit old, but I'm wondering...
Do I need the first one to have this one?
Anyone have any idea where I can get physical or virtual injury cards?
Question: Do I need to buy the dices separately or is it with the books?
Becca Scott I just finished watching the episode where you constantly cheat on Table Top by looking at Wil Wheaton's hand of tiles whilst playing Lanterns
Anyone got a link to that personally test?
Probably would have been smart to put this out before We're Alive: Frontier premiered
DAMMIT I wrote THESE EXACT mechanics for my own game today, I never heard about this game what the heck????
I'll change them of course but what are the odds? I had the exact same ideas for margin of success in a D100 system
+Geek & Sundry There is such a thing as an actual d100!!! Are we sure it's not Advanced Undead (2nd edition)????
;)
where's the gameplay tho?
The use of green and red highlighted makes it difficult for colorblind players. There are a lot of colorblind players out there...
Just came across this. There is additional markings on all the gameplay highlights that use a series of * for the different levels (* for Arcade Mode, ** for Weekend Warrior, and *** for Survivalist) just above each time they are used for those who are colorblind to still be able to associate between the gameplay modes.
*Gestalt is pronounced like "geshtalt".
I've heard it both ways
"Gestalt" is German, Taras' pronounciation is the proper one.

Were do i go to take the test?

Where to order it?
You can order from Renegade Game Studios here: www.renegadegamestudios.com/products?category=RPG
For digital you can go to DTRPG here: www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/3439/Hunters-Entertainment
Or you can pick the game up at your local FLGS (or ask them to order it if they don't carry it already)
Basically it’s Advance version of End of the World RPG system...
How do I buy this?!?! Take my money!
Go to your local game shop and ask them to pre-order a copy.
...You are a bit too cheerful at the start. The whole "slowly starving to death" isn't exactly something I'd be looking forward to keenly. Hahaha. Good vid.
The game is as much of a 'how badly can I mess up a roll' just like percentile Warhammer rpgs.
Fishing survival gear.... Still hot ;)
shadical
Interested but again a game with too many damned unnecessary dice.
Thought the same thing. I was convinced she would have an easier time explaining refinancing a home...
LMFAO
Holy shit this is complicated...
she's fuggin ripped
This game is really bad. I'm sorry, but I just bought the survivors guide and it's terrible. I cant even figure out how to make a character. It doesnt have enemy stats. And its rules are spread through miles of fluff content.
Additionally I cant find any help with figuring out the game. Not on the games official site. Reddit rpg pages. Nor any CZcams videos on how to actually play.
Just like this video, it glosses over character creation. Which in all honesty, if that wasnt so confusing I wouldn't be complaining here.
Lastly, pdfs that come out monthly are only available for that month. They delete them afterwards. Unlike DnD which has all of its erratas, UA, and modules out for anyone to download or purchase.
Meaning if you buy in late to the game, you won't get as much content as those who pick it up early. But you won't pick it up early, because I just told you it's a terrible system.
It is really confusing and I'm struggling with character creation as well (I just got the game) however I think you could just alter the rules to make it more easy to understand. Not trying to be mean, I am also very confused 😂. I'm prbly gonna edit the rules a bit cuz it's that confusing
sorry for thinking this is a pc game

I thought I will get good info on how to prepare for coronavirous . Nvm
