Commercial soldering of tin is done with hot irons, I can order tin in rolls up to 12 inches wide and various thicknesses from my local scrap yard/steel supplier but it has to be ordered, I will pick some up and film a video on it in my shop, great video

I am now retired from Roofing and Sheetmetal trades. Part of the reason for your unsatifactory soldering job is realated to improper flux and not enough heat when you applied the solder.(50/50 bar solder)
If your metal is galvanize steel or tin, try cutting muriatic acid for flux and get the joint to be soldered hot to the point that the solder flows evenely. Don't scrub the solder....let it flow while moving the iron (called sweating the joint). When done soldering, wipe doen the joint with water and a rag to nutralize the acid flux.
With a little practise you soldering will get better.

The top pole has a metal peg hammered in with a short tin ring around it to stop the wood splitting,instead of the wooden peg

great timing 1st Sgt. I thinking of making some tent poles... my first preference is to tie my shelter half to a tree - but conditions don't always allow.

Great video! I have made a few of these myself. For the ferrules I used tin that I cut out of empty gallon lacquer cans after cleaning them up. It helps that they already have a radius to work with, though I am somewhat unhappy with the gauge. Would like something a little heavier. Not everybody has specialized tools to make the tenons. What I did was create a jig perpendicular to the fence of my router table, then I rotated the pole in the jig with the end of the pole over a straight bit. This turned out great. I also fabricated a jig that slid down the slots of my table saw in order to cut the poles in two. The jig enabled exact consistency in the angle of cut, and the finished lengths for all the poles that I made. - Eric Hageman
Great tips. I should have thought to demo the table saw idea.
This is one place you don't want a super tight fit. When it rains, the wood will swell and get impossibly stuck.
From there it will take days of drying or a heat gun to get it apart.
I know this from experience... A single coating or two of linseed oil was not enough to prevent it in my case, using pine.
Of course, if you make that diagonal cut the same length as the joint, I suppose it may solve or alleviate this problem?

To remove the coating on the tin, use turpentine with paper towel and a lot of elbow grease. That will remove the coating. Buying tolls of tin in bulk, you can get it uncoated. However the uncoated sheet tin is more expensive, but less time consuming.
I don’t know the exact specifics of the tent poles, but if it is anything like various other items from that time period, the solder was probably lead based.
As for the tin joint why not ask axel ulrich on advice for soldering
I think that for this you could use aluminum and solder it in place of the tin I must admit I cant solder very well I'm a welder by hobby aluminum might be easier to run a bead as for the reproduction they might lay wire over the gap on a preheated tin peice if I can get some tin I might try this also lead based solder would help alot the morden lead free stuff doesnt flow the same I know that from electronics repair
Good point on the solder. We had another recommendation to use predominately lead solder and it has certainly worked better than the others.

I bought a percussion cap pistol a few weeks ago. I finally got the caps three days ago and was firing it when I noticed that it wasn't firing until the 2nd or 3rd try. The pistol was cleaned two days before I bought it from the man. I'm not sure what type of reproduction it is all I can see is Spain so. I don't know if there is any ideas you can give me about how to get it to fire the first time.
Wesley Cantrell another reason is you probably have caps that are the wrong size. If you bought 10s, buy 11s, and vice versa. The caps are not seating and it’s taking the force of the hammer hitting it a couple times to seat the cap.
@@banjoman5000 not sure the grain powder as I'm using rounds left over from a re-enactment from last season
@@banjoman5000 I will try 11s cause I'm using 10's. My brain said buy 11's but I got 10's cause it was cheapest option
Wesley Cantrell chances are it’s the wrong size caps. I posted the second reply after re-reading your original comment and thinking about it more. I have had the same issue before and it was due to the caps being the wrong size.
