      Thanks so much for your kind words. We do our best to tackle the real world realities of reenacting and helping reenactors of all skill levels. It's good to know the history, issue, and contractors of ground clothes, for example, but it doesn't teach you how to stay warm at night. Your support means a lot, thanks so much.

    Honestly very smart to carry that first aid. Personally I've never done reenactment before because I live in Southern California so it's not as big as compared to the North East. However after observing your channel for a while I'd definitley try to this hobby if I could one day.

    Had a few "unfortunate" hunting experiences WITHOUT TP, and I'll tell ya, I won't be caught without it again!

    One thing I had problems with as a young teenager in reenacting (pre-inter webs) and even now that I’m looking to return to the hobby 25 years later is cooking. Would you guys be willing to do a video on preparing the basic three day rations? I’m reading the book by C. A. Stevens and he said how salt pork was boiled but what all other ways was hardtack prepared and eaten? Thank you for all the work you guys have done

    • @ScottAvellino1
      @ScottAvellino1 Před 3 lety

      You should check out the civil war Digital digest. One thing I’m going to try is if I’m using a dry cured bacon ration I will crush up hardtack into bits and maybe add a little water or coffee and then fry that in the bacon grease after I’m done cooking the bacon. I’ve heard that was done along with cornmeal. You can make a stew with your hardtack and foraged items as well if you’d like.

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  Před 5 lety +2

      I don't think it matters in any noticeable way. As long as it's sealed and doesn't spend it's entire life in direct sunlight, it should be fine. If you cook with it, it could be good practice to change it after each event or so depending on how often you reenact.

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  Před 3 lety

      The messkits are made by Dixie tinworks. Currently there is no "shop" to speak of that makes the berdan knapsacks to our knowledge. However we do have the plans and produce them from time to time in runs. Feel free to shoot an email to captain Whitehall, email address can be found at www.2ndusss.com.
      As for the sackcoat, there is no evidence of there being green sackcoats issued or privately purchased by any sharpshooter in either regiment.

    That was a good video. Now don't hate me for this, I like to hike and nature calls no matter where you are. The biodegradable baby wipes are the only thing I carry anymore. They are also good to help clean up blisters, cuts, minor burns and more besides the obvious use. I'm sure there is a period correct tin or whatever to keep them in and you will never camp without them once you try them. Sorry but a creature comfort I found and won't give up. ;)

      Theres was two swords made at the time. The M1840 NCO sword Nd the M1840 Musicians sword. Only reference of the two crossing would be a NCO carrying a the shorter musicians sword if they were of short stature. Nothing can be found on musicians carrying the NCO sword however.
