Canvas Wedge Tent from the 1800s

- Do you want to camp in the cooler fall, winter, and spring months? If so, a canvas tent would be much more comfortable than a modern polyester tent. But new canvas tents can be expensive. An older used canvas tent would be an economical alternative. So Eva and I bought a used 1800s-style Civil War wedge tent two years ago and have gradually modified it until it is now just as weather and critter proof as a modern tent. This video shows successive stages of this project.

Love it! Old school. Not too long ago I sold all my canvass tents to scouting friends. We spent many nights in these old tents. Gives you a little appreciation for the old-timers.

Your video helped me understand the best way to block out the outside world in our tent. We took ours out for our honeymoon and it was lovely but definitely a bit breezy!

Frazier Douglas congratulations on another great TENT CAMPING video. You are introducing scores of people to this form of recreation. Right now I have booked, mostly through Reserve America, over 65 tent camping nights for 2020. Because of your encouragement and knowledge sharing, I am now able to do both "fast camp" and "slow camp" so that if I only have 3 days I can do that with ease. If I can reserve for 21 nights I use the slow camp and it is a few more amenities. I am also so impressed with your inclusion of your grandson in your videos. You are giving him a gift for a lifetime, and I am certain that he will become a future voice for this beautiful form of recreation.
Chris McLaughlin Thank you Chris for your very kind comments. It sounds like you are now doing what I was ding about 10 years ago. I use to take several fast camps ( I called them overnight, shifting, or touring camps) a year plus a few slow (long-term or base camps). Unfortunately, my age and family circumstances have slowed me down. And you are right - your strategies, equipment, and procedures differ for each one. Horace Kephart discussed a few of these differences about 100 years ago. I may have to do a video on that topic in the future. Do I remember correctly that you live and camp in New York? If so, I want to talk more about that state. Regardless of that, I hope you have a great year and take lots of photos.
@@moderntentcamping I would be glad to help in any way Frazier---on the fast camp----I have been usin the brand CORE----their Core 6 model sets up in less than three minutes ----it fits a queen maddress and some chairs ---I purrchased it from SOSTCO---because of their return policy in the event there was a problem-----It sets up like an umbrella---it is the fastest set up I have every seen ----so if I have very little time it is my go to-----let me know if i can help-
Nice tent... If I remember correctly, you did a video on this tent. Yes/No I will still watch. A canvas tent is much warmer in the winter. I like the addition that Ava added to the sides on the bottom. Great video. Thank you for sharing, take care Frazier D.
RedWhite&Blue 78 Good memory. I recorded a Campsite Setup video last year and described this tent but I made more improvements as a result of that trip. So this video shows the newer improvements. Thanks for all your support.

You can cut down the upright poles three or so inches and that will eliminate most of the gap between the sides and ground.

That's a very nice looking canvass tent you guys have. I like how easy it is to modify it into exactly what you want. You guys could sew in a floor now since you have made those other improvements. Thanks!

Louise Tannahill where did you get it? Does it have a sod cloth? Have you upgraded it? Do you attend re-enactments or living history events? Do you sleep on cots or the ground? What thoughts do you have about it? I really like the canvas but wish we had more interior space.

Scott Hill yes, they are much warmer and cozier than the newer nylon and polyester tents. I bought it for cold weather but I’m wanting to take it on warmer weather trips. I really like how we have set it up but wish we had a zippered door. If a critter wanted to get in, they could. I’m especially fearful of skunks and we had one looking in our open door one night a couple of years ago. A powerful reminder to not bring food or food smelling clothing into the tent. There’s a tent similar to your that I’ve been searching for. In the movie call “never cry wolf” I think around 1986. If you know anything about it please point me to the right direction
I don’t know that particular tent but you can find canvas wedge tents on civil war sutler web sites. We got a plain one and sewed a sod cloth at the bottom when we lay a tarp on top, we have a good seal against bugs and bad weather. Good luck.
How does a tent like this stay up without guy lines off the upright poles?
The canvas walls must be staked to the ground. The taught fabric holds the 3 support poled in place.
Wonderful video! Id like to make a wedge tent for use primarily as a gathering place during the day. Any wisdom regarding keeping out the mosquitos? is it wise to only use these after the first frost? Thank you.
We have only used it in cool weather and so I’m not sure about mosquitoes. A thermocell mosquito repellent might work but I’d read about using it in closed spaces before trying it. Thanks for watching and sending this note.
