P&O Iona Norwegian Fjords cruise - DIY ferry from Hellesylt to Geiranger - Episode 5

This is our third port of call onboard the beautiful P&O Iona as we set sail for a 7 night Norwegian Fjords. On the Norway Cruise we will call at Stavanger, Olden, Hellesylt for Geirangerfjord and Haugesund.
In this episode, we arrive in the tiny village of Hellesylt, before taking the ferry through Geirangerfjord and over to Geiranger.
The ferry (thefjords.no) runs several times a day and costs around £50pp for a return trip. As the first ferry was sold out (the ship uses the ferry for excursions), we booked on the next available one.
Its a brilliant journey, lasting just over an hour and sails through Geirangerfjord (Geirangerfjorden) and past the Seven Sisters Waterfalls in to Geiranger. Here we had just over an hour to explore before getting the ferry back.
Back onboard Luke had organised that P&O deliver canapés and champagne ready for when we returned to the ship, what a delicious treat!
When Iona departed Hellesylt, we headed up on deck to see the spectacular views of the Norwegian Fjords - it really is stunning and a must see!
As it was Gavin's birthday, we had a meal at P&O's fine dining restaurant, The Epicurean.
Tonight's menu at The Epicurean was very special, only done once per cruise onboard Iona, it was check Kjartan Skjelde's six-course taster menu. This was some very good food!
We finished the evening off in the Crows Nest for a few drinks - while we had all intention of going to the silent disco, we were tired after such a long day.
It was such a perfect birthday - cruising the Norwegian fjords on P&O Iona really is the perfect way to spend a birthday!

We may not be the youngest cruisers but we are trying to break the stereotype that cruising is for retired people. On a cruise you will normally find us wondering around the ship taking in the atmosphere (and working our way through the cocktails).

Wow it was good to geiranger again. That was always a tender port in my ship days. Never heard of hellsylt, but enjoyed your trip. Loved it. 🍻
Yeah, they’ve not a big floating pontoon for ships visiting the port, but we think they are limiting the number of visits so they stop in Hellsylt instead. Lovely little village!

Lovely vlog brought back fond memories of my cruise to Norway and Iceland on Crown Princess in 2009. We sailed right through the fjord to Geiranger and got lovely views of the seven sisters.. Thank you

Although I have never done an ocean cruise, I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. The scenic views in this one are as good as any I have seen. Fabulous quality and so professional ! When we eventually get round to an ocean cruise (we like river cruises), I think the Norwegian fjords will have to be our number 1 choice based on what I have seen in this and the other films in this series.

Fantastic vlog such amazing scenery! I’m going on Iona next weekend to Norway, i’m doing geirangerfjord but as an p&o excursion and booked it as I really want to see the Seven Sisters waterfall too, looks brilliant!

Sailing in Geiranger fjord was also one of our dreams and it absolutely did not disappoint. Epic is the right word. We booked the self-guided tour with P&O and it was an early start for us. We got to Geiranger about 9:30 am and had 3 hours there. We did a bit of a hike along the Fossevandring next to the waterfall. The views from the Fjord Centre down the valley was spectacular, even though it wasn't high up. It was a 90-minute saunter and it was very enjoyable and highly recommended.
Great shots of the sailing out. We had the same views from our balcony, which was a few decks below where you were. I don't remember the thunderstorm. We must have been tucking into our steaks at Keel & Cow.
We ate in Epicurean on a different night with the normal menu, and loved the food. Guess what? We had the table next to yours!

The scenery is spectacular.Ive thought about doing a fjord cruise the only thing that has put me off is the fact that you don't know what the weather is going to be like.
It really is amazing! We’ve been several times and this was the first where we didn’t have the best weather, but it’s still stunning. June/July us normally the best time from experience but then you could be unlucky like us this year! Look at our Sky princess cruise from last year, that was June and it was stunning ☀️ Do consider booking 👍
We visited Hellesylt on 12th July which fell on my 40th birthday too. We were travelling with both sets of parents and my partner surprised me by proposing at the waterfall...had some locals cheering haha. Booked to return in 2025. We did the local ferry to Geiranger and past the seven sisters (although was more like 5 sisters lol)

Depends which way your travelling really? Are you doing a return trip? If return just swap sides each way.
Sailing from hellesylt to gerainger I would say port side( that’s the side you’ll see the 7sisters waterfalls) 👍
