P&O Iona Norwegian Fjords cruise - Viking homeland, Haugesund - Episode 6

- Join us in our final port of call, Haugesund. Haugesund, homeland of the Viking kings and birthplace of Norway.
This is our fourth port of call onboard the beautiful P&O Iona as we set sail for a 7 night Norwegian Fjords. On the Norway Cruise we will call at Stavanger, Olden, Hellesylt for Geirangerfjord and Haugesund.
In this episode, we arrive in Haugesund and visit the Viking village!
We start the day off with with breakfast in the Keel & Cow, before heading on a P&O excursion to the Viking village. This P&O excursion cost us £70 per person for a half day excursion.
We start our excursion at Avaldsnes Church. Outside the church you will find the virgin Mary’s sewing needle, this is the last of five monumental stones that once formed part of the heathen place of worship, it is believed that should the monument ever touch the wall of the church then doomsday will come! As it stands there’s only 9cms clearance, we are 9 CMs from doomsday!
Next, we were shown the ruins of a medieval royal manor that was once connected to the church. After exploring the church, we made our way over to the historic centre.
The walk from the historic centre and church over to the Viking farm wasn’t too strenuous, however the path is made of gravel and uneven so bare this in mind if you have mobility issues.
Exploring the Viking farm was loads of fun, it really is like stepping back in time, even the guides were dressed in period clothing for that added touch of authenticity, it really is fantastic. First, we took a look at the long house, then we explored the herb garden and livestock enclosures before making our way around various pitch houses a round house and then finally a cart house and log shed.
Back onboard P&O Iona we help a Cruise Monkeys Facebook and Patreon meet up in the Crows Nest. It was lovely to be able to sit down and have a proper chat.
We paid £997pp for our P&O Norwegian Fjords cruise and booked with / martinsholidayvillage - This was a Select fare and included Parking and £210 onboard credit. We also took out the P&O Ultimate Drinks Package for this cruise which costs £39.95pp, this was upgraded to the Deluxe package as P&O changed their packages, more info on the P&O Drinks packages can be found here:cruisemonkeys....

We may not be the youngest cruisers but we are trying to break the stereotype that cruising is for retired people. On a cruise you will normally find us wondering around the ship taking in the atmosphere (and working our way through the cocktails).

We did this exact same Viking tour last year, but went to the farm first and then the museum and church. We definitely missed out as most the farm buildings were shut including the boat house. We were pretty underwhelmed, but looks like it is much improved now.
Awwww! Yeah we’ve heard a few mixed reviews since putting up the video. Such a shame it’s not consistent.
Love the fun videos and always love that you show the FULL menus which no other cruise vlogger I’ve seen does! I’m a bit of a fussy eater, don’t touch seafood, fish or mushrooms which appear throughout most menus, so great to see the full menus and what I could pick 👍🏻

Wasn't it a wet and miserable day! We did the same excursion as you but we went to the Viking Village first. I thought both the village and the museum were interesting. I wish we had more time in the museum. I felt a bit rushed and there was so much to see.

Yeah, we think we lucked out on this excursion! Definitely could have done with maybe another half to an hour! Yes, and it was mikes better than our Arvia one 😀
Never been to Haugesund either, but may have sailed by there at night on Hurtigrutin at night in August! Sorry it was raining, but you did get some good video through the rainy windows. The shell damage from WWII is interesting. The Viking Village looks like a great place to visit-nice filming/editing. Yes, ship excursions mean you don’t have to think! Meet-up with FB group was a good idea. The kabobs on the chain looked interesting…I love baklava! Bad that you had reservations to the show and couldn’t get in. Lovely sunset. Hope the shingles have calmed down.😢
Its a typical Norwegian Coastal town, lots of people just went for a walk to town, but we really enjoyed the village!

Just about to get off the Iona now guys after our one week Norwegian cruise. The food was fantastic on this cruise,unlike our previous cruise on Iona. It's been excellent all round!

Thank you! They now offer it as an option - there is a small charge but was very quiet when we went so easy to get in to.

Hi! Yes we went to the keel and cow which is a specialty restaurant the breakfast was a new thing so we wanted to give it a go. Inclusive options such as the MDR Quays and Horizon are available. We just thought hey, this is new let’s try it 👌🏻

Interesting but not surprised by your experience in the 710 Club, we received a death threat after asking to see a drinks menu.
By far the worse experience I’d had on a cruise ship!
