My favourite movie foreshadowing is from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
Within the opening narration, it introduces his invention, spray on shoes which he can't remove and wears throughout the whole movie, and also shows a brief shot from the end of the movie, of Flint's looking up from something, as he hangs from the FLDSMDFR.
During this shot, the narration says "But when all seemed lost, I stared at defeat, and found hope" and at the end of the movie it is revealed he was staring at his feet, prompting him to stop the machine with his spray on shoes.
I stared at defeat -> I stared at da feet... The end was revealed within the first 5 minutes by a pun, lol

Well personally I think this is very ackward foreshadowing but a clever one. If the directors were willing to hide such a ridiculous foreshadowing as to not spoil the ending that's pretty clever indeed. Although this video really got batman the dark knight totally wrong. For one thing while Harvey dents quote was related to his downfall that's not all there is to it. Its more of how Harvey dent actually goes on a downward spiral. Eventually little by little we see that as batman and the Gotham police force. Do thier best within everything within thier power to deter people from trying to pretend to be batman and do things batman won't normally and would downright break his moral code. (using guns and killing people). It certainly does show alot as we see the movie progress one of jokers first points is that at one point. Even if everything they do is to stop crime no one is perfect and would break and not always stick to a code. As most of Gotham police and batman himself have been very active and stopping crime. Eventually everyone will have a grey area that breaks such so called rules and make them no better than those who they try to stop. So as we see he eventually shows joker eventually becomes so much of a threat the only way to stop him was to capture his henchmen who tried to kill Gordon. Although it fails Harvey dent captures one of them although the man he captured was insane. He was willing to do almost anything to get the joker and was willing to kill him after he flipped once. After he failed the guy admits he knew nothing about joker he flipped again to decide his faith. But after batman catches the coin he tells him all about how hes an insane mental patient used by the joker in Arkham asylum and tells dent he will reveal his identity to stop the killings. so if anything happens gotham will have Harvey dent and the gcpd backing him up. In this moment we see how joker is right and dent becomes more dark. But since he was trying to suppress his other at least self proclaimed dark half. Since he was know for having a unique personality its almost like they were two personalities which is his nickname Harvey two face that and his coin with two faces to. In the scene in the dark alley we see that half his face is entirely blacked out showing hes most likely at the edge. But given he still believes in batman he go evil and do what he would never have done so with this scene. We actually reach a climax and see all the things that makes Dent unique and similar to Bruce. But given he also feel into madness after blaming gcpd, himself and batman for Rachel's death its truly tragic. We were looking at the main villain the whole time just developing and eventually after having 1 bad day and losing everything. He was no longer Gothams white knight its also sad and plot irony (regarding Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent). Such similar characters only that dent couldn't handle it. After all the stuff u cant really blame Harvey dent after all he went through although its pretty tragic foreshadowing none the less. Bruce Wayne was the hero but Harvey dent survived and became the villain against the city and hero. He tried to help but at least I am happy at the end of the movie Harvey Dent forgives Bruce Wayne he was truly the hero Gotham deserved but not the one it needed.

I think that the Aliens "foreshadowing" is incorrect because her using the power loader in the beginning merely sets up that she is skilled in operating one. The fact that she uses it later and is good at it is NOT foreshadowing. If there is a movie about somebody that draws and in the beginning they are clearly good at drawing and then in the end they win a drawing competition, that's not foreshadowing that's just probability.

TheIncognito90 Chekhov's gun is foreshadowing. "You see this item here? It's going to be used by the finale." Besides, Chekhov's gun is a principle that you should cut out superfluous things, not a literary device

XBlueM0ndayX chekhov's gun also negates the writing gimmick of a red herring, which comes in quite handy when writing a detective story, eh? :)
even trickier is how easy it can be to confuse foreshadowing with call-backs....

Chizerz The power loader is a Chekhov's gun, not necessarily foreshadowing. Man's red fire is more of a McGuffin than it is foreshadowing. Grant's explanation of how raptors hunt in packs is just simple explanation of animal behavior. It's no more foreshadowing than saying the T-Rex relies on motion to see. Shaun of the Dead, the X's to foreshadow someone's death (or oranges in the Godfather), the clip of Eastwood and even the tying of the female seatbelts are good examples of foreshadowing, but the ones I mentioned seem to be other plot devices more than classic foreshadowing.

Honestly, the whole Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End) are filled with foreshadowing, it's Edgar Wright's signature.
In Hot Fuzz, Danny asked a lot of ridiculous action movies question (have you ever fired two guns whilst jumping through the air, etc.) which were all done during the second half of the movie.
(Spoilers) In The World's End, the names of the pub basically tells the whole story.
    • The first pub they go to is The First Post.
    • The second pub they go to is The Old Familiar which looks identical to The First Post, where they meet Oliver's sister, Sam.
    • Gary is featured in the banned board in The Famous Cock.
    • They found out about Gary's lies and then fight the robot teenagers in The Cross Hands.
    • The see local drug dealer Reverend Green in The Trusted Servant.
    • The fight the robot twins in The Two-Headed Dog.
    • The gang is tempted by robot women at The Mermaid.
    • Gary King slams his head against the wall at The King’s Head.
    • A car is driven through The Hole In The Wall, which makes an actual hole in the wall.
    • And the world ends at The World’s End.

However, when he goes back to 1885 in part III and goes under the persona of Clint Eastwood, everyone sees him use this technique against Mad Dog. Another chance for WatchMojo to felate The Dark Knight. Yes, the fact that everyone knew he was going to be Two-Face absolutely negates his poignant words. Dear WatchMojo.com,
You missed the whole scene in The Dark Knight, which was more than just the motto Harvey mutters.
Here's what I mean: the ENTIRE DINNER SCENE is foreshadowing to what happens. Harvey refers to the "Protector of Rome", which would become Caesar, a dictator. This suggests a dark side to trying to do right in public service. The ballerina in the dinner scene also holds up a piece of paper to cover HALF of Dent's face (the bottom half, but an allusion nonetheless), suggesting he's Batman.
    Thank you.

    • @FrankGamerChannel
      @FrankGamerChannel Před 9 lety +4

Frank Gamer Also worth mentioning, WatchMojo.com, is that Bruce says "one night with my friends and you'll never have to fundraise again." This turns dark when you realize that one night with the Joker and Harvey's life was over. Although, this might be speculation. The paper to the face during dinner was more obvious foreshadowing (or an allusion to his Batman Forever transformation into Two-Face).

    • @Gabreya
      @Gabreya Před 9 lety +2

Frank Gamer Also, the scene where he was scaring and interrogating one of the Joker's henchmen by flipping his coin before one side was damaged, he showed his true, dark side. This was exactly the night before Rachel's death and his transformation into Two-Face. Yet, he already had that darkness within him. And as the Joker said in his last scene, "..all it takes is a little push."

When Jeremy Melton/Adam Carr asks each girl for a dance they each state a mean comment right after he asks them. This foreshadows each of the girls' fate.
    - Shelley "In your dreams, loser."
Killed while lying down in a sleeping position in a body bags.
    - Lily "Eww!"
Receives maggots in a chocolate box and her body lands in a dumpster.
    - Paige "I'd rather be boiled alive."
Gets thrown into a hot tub and is later electrocuted.
    - Dorothy "He attacked me!"
Makes everyone believe she was "attacked" by Jeremy after being caught kissing him behind the bleachers. Adam makes everyone believe that all the killings were Dorothy's doing.
    - Kate "Maybe later, Jeremy."
Jeremy/Adam lets Kate live since she is the only girl that did not insult him and wasn't mean to him. She does eventually dance with Adam and have a relationship with him.

      @TheRedname Před 7 lety +2

awesome420ication No, it's not foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is a very subtle, otherwise unremarkable clue as to what happens later in the plot. As in my example, Ripley using the power loader is more to do with making the plot make sense. If she had randomly jumped in and started using a power loader during the climax, it would've been a plot hole. And so, to ensure the continuity makes sense, they have her use the power loader in a previous scene; providing the audience with the knowledge that she has enough skill to use one and setting up the final confrontation with the Xenomorph Queen.

nowonmetube exposition is saying something that will be useful during or throughout the story, foreshadowing is giving clues to events that will happen later in the story so the mans red fire one doesn’t count as foreshadowing, it’s literally like saying a knife will be useful in killing the dark lord but really vaguely( this happens a lot in Disney movies) , and than the main character only gets it in the final battle. It’s more setup /payoff/Chekhov’s Gun than foreshadowing really.

I've seen quite a few of movies and here we go on what I think about the following:
6 - I actually knew this one. How about that!
5 - "You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." Yes, he becomes the bad-guy as he predicts...
But also in The Dark Knight Rises, Batman dies (or at least fakes it) as a hero as he takes the "shot" for Gotham... just like his father in Batman Begins takes the fist shot for his wife. Is your mind blown?
On a side note: Two-Face fell but didn't learn to pick himself up. LOL
3 - I got how the raptors behavior was predicted but didn't realize the seat belt thing until now. I'll never unsee it now: two female seat belt connectors. I feel dumber. Ha.
2 - I like how the Dark Side cave (That's what I call it.) where in Luke's vision or whatever he defeats Vader or to see he could become Vader.
Now check this out: take what we learned and read this quote from the Emperor in The Jedi Returns: "Good! Your hate has made you powerful. Now, fulfill your destiny and take your father's place at my side!" Wow! Maybe this was the Sith's plan the whole time... or maybe there was more to it but was ended with the Emperor's death. That's a lot of food for thought!

another thing to note about harvey dent is that most scenes with him that didn't have his face completely burned, pay attention to the lighting in some scenes, it shows the two sides of dent's persona perfectly, foreshadowing two face

Lol, there was no foreshadowing in Usual suspects. By the last scenes with the cup and watches they literally told us: It's him!

If you haven't seen This Is The End - spoiler alert. If you have then you know that early on in the movie James Franco gives clues as to how the movie ends.

UnkeptMoss328 Foreshadowing here mostly consists of symbolism. Basically, foreshadowing here hints towards what event is going to happen in the future instead of hinting towards some mystery in the movie. Then again, I am not sure what unusual suspects is doing on the list.

Lost Highway, without a doubt one of the most iconic foreshadowings ever:
    "Dick Laurent is dead."
Also, OLDBOY (2003). That movie has a lot of genius foreshadowing throughout.

Another use of foreshadowing in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers when Galadriel tells Elrond that "the quest will claim [Frodo's] life"
At first it seems like Frodo won't survive the journey to Mordor, but he does. However, the physical and psychological trauma he suffered forever changed his innocent outlook on the world, which left him unable to settle back into his simple life. So, in a way, the quest did claim his life (his old life).

Foreshadowing the last entry with the first entry in a list about foreshadowing. Well played.
