Solo Hike From Chamonix to Mer de Glace Glacier via Rochers des Mottets | Mont Blanc Massif

Starting from Chamonix, the hike to Grotte de Glace via Rochers des Mottets is a moderately challenging route, ideal for early June when the snow is beginning to melt but the higher trails are still relatively quiet. The trail begins near the town center, leading you through a mix of well-marked paths and steeper, rocky sections. Early on, the path meanders through dense forest, offering occasional glimpses of the Chamonix valley below. As you continue to ascend, the forest thins, and you reach the rocky outcrop known as Rochers des Mottets.
At Rochers des Mottets, the elevation provides expansive views of the Chamonix valley and the surrounding peaks. This spot is a good place to take a break, with views of the Aiguilles Rouges and the distant Mont Blanc massif. From here, the trail becomes more demanding, with steeper sections that require careful footing, particularly where patches of lingering snow and ice remain in the shaded areas.
The final stretch to the Grotte de Glace is a descent onto the Mer de Glace glacier. The ice cave, Grotte de Glace, is carved into the glacier, and though it changes shape each year due to the movement of the ice, it remains a fascinating destination. The interior of the cave features tunnels and rooms illuminated by natural light filtering through the ice, providing insight into the glacier’s history. The hike back to Chamonix retraces the same path, offering another chance to take in the alpine scenery.
