Mojave National Preserve to Joshua Tree National Park | Scenic Desert Drive
Embark on an unforgettable road trip from the serene Kelso Dunes in the Mojave National Preserve to the rugged beauty of Joshua Tree National Park, showcasing Southern California's desert landscapes in the vibrant bloom of spring.
Starting at Kelso Dunes, marvel at the towering sand dunes shimmering in the morning light. The spring season breathes life into the arid landscape, with wildflowers dotting the sands. Take Kelso Dunes Road back to Kelbaker Road, cutting through the heart of the Mojave.
Travel south on Kelbaker Road, where Joshua trees begin to appear. Continue to National Trails Highway (Route 66). Turn right onto National Trails Highway, passing through Amboy and the famous Amboy Crater.
From Amboy, turn right onto Amboy Road heading south. This road takes you through stunning desert vistas toward Twentynine Palms. Turn left onto Two Mile Road, leading to the north entrance of Joshua Tree National Park.
Here, the landscape transforms with massive boulders and rugged mountains. Explore the park's two distinct desert ecosystems: the Mojave Desert with Joshua trees and the Colorado Desert with unique flora and fauna.
In spring, Joshua Tree National Park bursts into color with wildflowers and cacti in vibrant displays. Hike Hidden Valley, climb the boulders at Jumbo Rocks, or drive through the park to soak in the vistas.
This road trip offers a breathtaking glimpse into the diverse beauty of the California desert, especially magical in spring. Enjoy the views coupled with original calm ambient music.
This road trip was part of a 16 days hiking trip to the Southwest USA national parks, preserves and monuments, April 2023.
In this trip I visited Death Valley, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, Monument Valley, The Grand Canyon, Mojave and Joshua Tree.

indeed
This is fantastic. Thanks for taking the time!
Thank you.
Is this place a part of grand canyon???
Hey there. No, the Grand Canyon is in the state of Arizona. This section is further upstream of the Colorado river, north east of the Grand Canyon, in the state of Utah. Very close to Arches national park and the town of Moab.
Amazing footage Rubi. Great job! It's like another planet out there.
Thank you, Todd. Yep, I can never get enough of it.
This is fabulous! Thank you.
Thank you, Cindy.
This is really incredible, thank you for posting! Can I ask what your experience was with the Apple Watch ultra? I’m planning an R3 trip soon and was unsure if I would need to carry a charger to top off the battery halfway through. (Planning on turning all battery saving options on with the exception of less frequent gps readings, which I will leave disabled and set to more frequent GPS)
Thank you, Mitchell. As I wrote to you before, Unfortunately, I can't recommend using the Apple Watch Ultra for such a long hike. The watch was 100% charged at the beginning of the hike. I turned off the Wi-Fi and cellular, and the always-on watch face option was disabled. The overall time it took me to complete the hike was just above 15 hours, and the watch battery died about 500 yards from the end of the hike. This is despite the fact that after it reached 10% battery, I switched to low power mode (which reduces the sample rate for the GPS and heart rate reading). If you think of recharging the watch, I recommend using one of these power banks: amzn.to/3xQrLoz They are ultralight, ragged, and enable fast charge (keep a fast charger for the watch with you). I used one of those for my iPhone during the hike, but I didn't have the watch charger with me. Four years ago I used a Polar Vantage 2 watch for an R2R2R hike that took me 18 hours to complete. It had lots of juice left at the end of the hike, and the GPS reading in the canyon seemed to be pretty accurate. This is the newer version: amzn.to/4c6ATnW Which month are you planning your hike for?
@@RubiHammer Thank you! And my apologies for double commenting - I didn’t realize. The advice is much appreciated! We are targeting the good weather window in October. This is all really good to know, maybe I’ll carry a battery bank and top off the battery during one or two of our longer breaks since I can’t afford a new watch right now. It is helpful to hear about your experience!
@@mitchellkirkham844 Mitchell, if you are planning to complete the hike over more than one day, you should definitely keep a power bank with you. You will be able to charge it at Phantom Ranch and/or do some extra walking at the North Rim and charge it at the visitor center there. I would say that perhaps the best strategy would be to make sure you bring enough 'juice' with you. If you are camping in the canyon or doing a day hike, charging a power bank may consume precious time. I hope you will have a pleasurable hike. Keep us posted.
Красота
Thank you. Beauty, indeed.
Thought we were gaining water not loosing it?
The Dead Sea is still losing more water than it gains annually. In fact, it is the underground stream of fresh water dissolving the salt in the ground that creates these sinkholes.
I’d be scared to be next to old dead hole sink holes they can still have trapped water underneath
Rightly so. I flew the drone from a safe distance.
What's it preserving ?
The Mojave National Preserve preserves a diverse array of desert landscapes, ecosystems, and cultural heritage sites. Cheers.
This was great, and I'll hazard a guess that your legs were wrecked afterward!😄
Thank you Todd. This hike serves more as a foot massage and foot skin peeling :) I would have hiked the entire thing barefoot, but it was the middle of the day, and the sand was too hot for climbing barefoot. It was too hard to keep quick feet in those climbs.
Outstanding atmosphere my friend, this looks and feels amazing!
Thank you, my friend. Much appreciated.
Another great hike Rubi! Love the hat man!
Thank you, Mario. If you like to get one: amzn.to/4ck0quc I also send you an email yesterday, adding you as a free member in my buy me a coffee page. Nice. I walked the Kelso Dunes during a full moon one night. Interesting how you edit out the camera pole but the shadow remains. Nice work.
Thank you, Ken, How was it hiking the dunes in moonlight? I used an Insta360 camera to film this hike. You actually don't have to edit out the camera pole, since if you use it correctly, it is in the camera blindspot. I just published a video of the complete hike: czcams.com/video/mv2xxeELlLs/video.htmlsi=2ETWg8RSg2HGVSYQ

America is just beautiful, minus the corruption of the people at the top. Is that an Joshua tree in the opening sec's of this short ??
Hi Gary. That is indeed a Joshua Tree. Very common in that neck of the world. You are welcome to watch the complete road trip video to enjoy more of these views in better quality. czcams.com/video/FlnDMn1veug/video.html The US is beautiful. It is not only the US. There is a worldwide leadership crisis. Take care.

Excellent job on this steep trail Rubi!! Awesome fitness and running skill!
Thank you, Todd.
A beautiful and very interesting look at this part of the country Rubi! Thank you!
Thank you, Todd. There is a big southwest out there, beyong the Grand Canyon :) In which state do you currently reside?
@@RubiHammer I'm out near the coast of California, 100mi north of Santa Barbara.
It is beautiful there, often foggy, but beautiful. I've been there a lot. I start many of my Southwest hiking trips either in LA or SF, usually taking a trip on Highway 1. I also have several friends in the area from the time I lived in the Bay Area. Lots of nice trails, too. I did this one a few years ago when visiting friends in Santa Barbara: czcams.com/video/gAuGZsBQGSM/video.html.

Thanks Rubi! How do you find these long drives? With you, like me, being from a small country, we're not used to long roads like this. I worry I would get bored. Amazing drone shots of the never-ending freight train! It was interesting to see the changing position of the sun in your video.
Thank you, Matt. I actually learned to enjoy those long drives. Indeed, they can be tough. In the past, during such long hiking trips, I used to drive mostly in the dark, maximizing the daylight for hiking. That used to be really tough, and I always felt that I missed a lot managing my trip this way. You can sense the scale of the landscape while driving in the dark, but you see very little. In recent years, I prefer allocating a day for driving from one major location to the next, doing 1-2 short hikes on the way, and some planned or random detours whenever the scenic road is off the shortest path to my destination. Whenever there is something interesting, I stop and shoot those drone videos. Listening to Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Simon and Garfunkel, and others, whose song lyrics become much more vivid while you explore the US landscape, also adds to the experience. Stopping at a random diner along the way for breakfast, homemade pie, or a burger is rarely disappointing. I hope that in the near future you will have the opportunity exploring the US, beyond the (amazing) California Pacific coast.
Nice video 😊
Thank you, Adam. You are welcome to watch the full video here: czcams.com/video/mL-KT13kVWg/video.html
I've been driving from coastal SoCal to the Grand Canyon, every year (except for 2yrs) since 2007, and sometimes 3 times a year. 9-1/2-11hrs each way, depending what vehicle I'm in (towing the camper vs driving a car). You've displayed it all beautifully here.....but it is a loooooooooong, boring, full day of driving! Beautiful territory though, and the landscapes are stunning, as you've shown! Thanks for another fantastic video Rubi!
Thank you, Todd. I haven't done this road as many times as you, so for me, it is always exciting. I drove once from LA to the Grand Canyon, taking a detour and stopping for short hikes in Joshua Tree and Mojave. Last year, I drove to the Grand Canyon starting from San Francisco, driving through Nevada and Utah, and finally arriving at the Grand Canyon (an 8-day trip). This year, I started the trip to the Grand Canyon from Denver (a 6-day trip). The Southwest is huge, with many places to explore. Indeed, driving from one location to the next takes time. These scenic driving videos work best as x5 speed hyperlapse.

Nice job, but you should be more polite and give passage to other hikers. This is good trail etiquette, don't let your eagerness to record this ruin it.
Saulo, Can you point to any specific point where it seems I was blocking passage from others on the trail?
😊

Perhaps I should ;) Thank you.
Probably my third time watching this video! Appreciate the footage! Got a last minute permit for a mid October attempt this year, just hoping the weather will be decent.
Thank you, Jay. I did this hike on June 1, 2021. That was shortly after the world started to come back from COVID, and it wasn't hard to get a permit 2 months in advance. I hope the weather will be good for you.
This is a great video! I’m gearing up to do R2R2R this October, may I ask what you found was the best way to manage battery on your apple watch ultra? I have one as well and would like to find the right balance of power-saving settings for the job.
Thank you, Mitchell. Unfortunately, I can't recommend using the Apple Watch Ultra for such a long hike. The watch was 100% charged at the beginning of the hike.
