The hike from Manzanita Rest Area to Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon is a remarkable journey through one of the world's most iconic natural landscapes. Starting at Manzanita, which is situated along the North Kaibab Trail, hikers descend further into the canyon, experiencing dramatic changes in scenery and climate.
From Manzanita, the trail winds down through the stunning Bright Angel Canyon, following Bright Angel Creek. The descent offers breathtaking views of the canyon's towering walls and lush vegetation, with the path often flanked by the soothing sounds of the creek. The trail is well-maintained but can be challenging due to its steep sections and the increasing heat as you descend.
Along the way, hikers will pass through the trail junction to Ribbon Falls, a beautiful detour worth the extra steps for its picturesque waterfall and serene atmosphere.
As you approach Phantom Ranch, the canyon's grandeur becomes even more apparent. The trail levels out somewhat, making the final stretch more manageable. Phantom Ranch, located near the Colorado River, offers a unique oasis with rustic cabins, a canteen, and shaded areas to rest. It’s a popular spot for hikers and mule riders alike, providing a perfect place to recover and reflect on the journey.
This hike, approximately 11km (7 miles) from Manzanita to Phantom Ranch, requires preparation and respect for the desert environment. Hikers should carry sufficient water, wear appropriate footwear, and be prepared for significant temperature changes. The effort is well rewarded with stunning vistas and the unique experience of descending into the heart of the Grand Canyon.

Thank you for the upload! Do you have to purchase a pass to hike the trail?

Thank you for your comment. No, there is no need for a pass to hike the South Kaibab, North Kaibab and Bright Angel trails in the Grand Canyon (beyond the National Park entry fee, that doesn't require prereservation). You will have to reserve a place in one of the designated camping sites along the trails if you plan to complete the hike within a few days and plan to camp. For the most part, trail-specific passes are required in US national parks for trails passing through areas designated as wilderness or trails that are exceptionally busy or have other restrictions to help preserve nature. The best time to hike down the Grand Canyon would be from late April to late June and late August to late October. At other times of the year, the weather can be anything from challenging to harsh. Cheers.

Thank you, Todd. At the moment, I have already shared POV videos covering the North Kaibab Trail from Phantom Ranch to the North Rim and back, as well as the South Kaibab descent, and the Bright Angel ascent. These cover the most popular hikes in the Grand Canyon. I will probably do a Rim-to-River hike sometime in the not-too-distant future, descending from Bright Angel and climbing back from South Kaibab.
All that will be left is to do the Tonto Trail, the Clear Creek and Crystal Creek Trails, and finally the Old Bright Angel Trail. I will probably be able to squeeze these into a 4-5 day visit to the Grand Canyon, skipping an R2R2R. I'm thinking of doing the Rim-to-River together with the Clear Creek and Crystal Creek Trails in a single day hike, leaving the Crystal Creek part as optional. If I am doing the math correctly, such a hike may be close in length and cumulative climb to an R2R2R. The Crystal Creek part is technical and requires some scrambling in some of the creek crossings, so I might keep that one for a future backpacking hike, when I'll be too old for those ultramarathon-like day hikes. That would keep the Rim-to-River plus Clear Creek (in & out) under 36 miles. A walk in the park :)
The Old Bright Angel Trail can be done as part of a North Rim loop, together with the North Kaibab (Rim to Manzanita Rest Point) and the Ken Patrick Trail on the North Rim.
Do you have any experience with any of those less popular trails?
