    MISTAKE: I said Versafine Clair is a dye ink and it is NOT. VERSAFINE CLAIR IS A PIGMENT INK!! MY APOLOGIES! PIGMENT INKS ARE OPAQUE and DYE INKS ARE TRANSLUCENT! (I might have mis read the screen during the video but the worksheet is correct). That's 2/2 Laurel. Maybe I should go on and retire, lol.

    I like how you explain foam vs felt pads. A lot of time, the manufacturer doesn’t tell you what kind of pad they are using, and it make a difference. You’re a good salesperson for Catherine Pooler dye. I think, I will give them a try. 😉

    Reinkers are so important. Back a few decades ago, in my broke 20's, I would always say buy one pad and its reinker, rather than two pads. (This was also before the internet having everything online. If you didn't get the reinker at the time, you might never find it again.)

    On the translucent to opaque continuum, dye-based inks are more transparent and pigment inks tend to the opaque side, one of the reasons you generally don't find white dye inks and people don't layer pigment inks (though they may blend them).

    Laurel, I am with you on buying ink refills because we live in the desert of the SW USA. EVERYTHING gets sucked dry in short order. My beef is that many companies do not sell refills and colors get discontinued as trends change. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to find refills for favorite colors, which I am trying to do as I type this. Also, I wish Catherine Pooler offered the ink cubes because I have limited storage space. I can store 4 cubes in the space of one full size ink pad. I make trays out of heavy cardstock that fit in the ink storage units and label the fronts of those trays with color name and swatch. I almost always make A2 size cards so the cube size isn't a big issue for me. Thanks for the tip on the Wow embossing ink too. I am more than ready to try a different brand. Have a great day.

    My one complaint is about Tim Holtz/Ranger. THeir ink pads come in a dry condition and they do not have reinkers on a lot of Archival colors. They are not cheap and I feel they are a waste of money. I have bought distress ink pad and Oxide and I have had to the same problem. Great video! Thanks! My favorite black ink is archival ink because it is not water reactive, I do a lot of watercolor and want my sentiment hold up. But you made a great point that you C.P. ink allows for heat embossing which makes it water resilient. And because it's did juicy it may actually sink into mutt cold press watercolor papers easier since they have a rough surface that can bff challenging to stamp. Great ideas and video. I think I will subscribe! 💖🌟

    I have almost a full set of Distress mini inkpads. And also collecting the reinkers which can be used as watercolour when diluted, or make sprays, too so I don't buy all those sprays on the market... a lot of potential there. Similar to oxides and their reinkers. Everything else according to my current needs. Just purchased a couple of alcohol resistant ink pads of different colours, so it isn't always black when colouring with alcohol markers. Distress inks aren't too good for precision stamping.

    I love the Cp inks but I do a lot of layering stamping and find it’s easier when a company puts a set together like Altenew or pinkfresh. I know you can layer some color groups of cp inks but they don’t always go together that well. Also they dry out very fast and I do not feel the color is the same after you use the Reinker, I’ve had this happen on two,of my cp pads...they are much darker now than the original color. I love her colors and how juicy the pads are.

    • @LaurelBeard

      CP released a color wheel which shows layering possibilities. You might find that helpful. That's interesting because I reink my CP pads all the time (they are foam so they will need reinking more often) and I haven't had a color change... So weird.....

    @stefaniestaniak4329 Před 3 lety

    Great review, thank you.

  • @itsthelittlethingsincardma7949

    Sorry Laurel, but pigment ink is opaque and dye ink is translucent. Pigment ink has tiny particles of pigment that do not dissolve with water. It's those pigment particles that do not soak into the paper which is why you cannot see the paper through the color. Dye ink has pigment that gets completely dissolved with its water base which means nothing sits on the paper and completely soaks into the paper. A good way to check if your ink is either dye or pigment... saturate a light weight piece of cardstock with your ink, if it bleeds through to the back its a dye ink... if it doesn't it's a pigment ink. (Think drip coffee vs instant coffee) Pigments are processed differently... dye pigment is like instant coffee and the pigments in pigment ink are made not to dissolve.

    • @LaurelBeard

    I’ve invested in the CP minis but I’m noticing I’m having to refill often bc I use them for ink blending and stenciling. So the larger pads do better for that technique? I’ve also noticed when I reink it, like you said, it takes time to set before I can use it for stamping otherwise I get some bleeding. Is it worth it to invest in full size? I have the refills… should I just keep refilling the minis?

      I prefer the whole size, you refill less often and you have more real estate for coverage!

    Id have to disagree that felt pads need to be refilled more than foam. Foam dries out way faster than felt.

      @@LaurelBeard A con for me for felt is sometimes pieces of the pad end up on your stamp and you may not notice until you stamp it, then it messes up your stamped image.

      Im glad you pointed out being able to buy a refill is a big deal. I started with stampin up years ago and bought refills for all of them. Still using them LOL. I have not bought all the refills for distress or distress oxide but I've been doing like you said and buy a bit at a time (most frequent colors I use first). I also now have decided like the new distress oxide colors from now on I buy the refill when I buy the pad. I have not bought the new colors in distress because I have mini in those and Im waiting for the mini. I dont use the distress as much as the oxides though. Im trying to decide on another ink line and mini vs full size. I have totally ruled out any that either have no reinkers or they seem harder to get (stores I shop dont carry them). Dye inks are so weird to me, they look super blotchy on images with a lot of surface especially when you stamp them, you have to walk away and let them do their thing.

    On your list you stated that dye ink pads are opaque. I believe that they are translucent, which is why you can’t see them on black paper.

    • @LaurelBeard
      @LaurelBeard  Před 3 lety +1

      You can't see dye inks on dark cardstock because they soak into the paper whereas pigment inks sit on top.

    • @barbborja1910
      @barbborja1910 Před 3 lety

      Laurel, the easiest way for me to explain how dye inks are translucent, is to have you hold Distress spray stain (dye) and oxide spray (pigment) up to a light source. You will be able to see through the bottle of stain, but not the oxide. If you still don’t believe me, Jennifer McGuire shows the difference in her 2019 my favorite crafty things on inks.

    • @LaurelBeard
      @LaurelBeard  Před 3 lety

      @@barbborja1910 HAHA. It's not that I don't not believe you. I just know what I know from the research I have done. I will say that oxide is a blend of dye and pigment ink (a fusion)so oxide and pigment ink don't really compare evenly.

    • @barbborja1910
      @barbborja1910 Před 3 lety

      @@LaurelBeard Then perhaps you can contact Ranger Ink and ask them? Dye inks are translucent, meaning you can see through them. This is why if you stamp yellow ink, then stamp the same area with red, you will get a tone of orange. If they were opaque, you would see red only.

    Laurel, you are a gem in a pile full of rocks, I thank you for this so so much!! and I gotta say (embarrassingly enough cause I've been stamping for years now) I've never tried WOW embossing ink, I've got their powder, but I've always just used versafine because...well, ... I just have, so I'm glad to know there's another one I could use instead, and that roller ball??? genius! I've had my eye on Catherine Pooler for a while, and when I need an ink pad (huh?) I'll be sure to go that way, I'm just impressed with this whole video, TFS xoxox

      Wow! But in all honesty, I rarely use BLACK embossing powder. I just stamp with a black pigment ink and sprinkle clear embossing powder over the top. SO much easier that way.
