  • Last month, a seemingly unbeatable record was broken. Three car enthusiasts made it from a garage in New York City to a hotel in Redondo Beach, California, in 27 hours and 25 minutes, shaving more than an hour off the old mark, set in 2013. Dana Jacobson reports on the real-life version of the 1981 slapstick comedy “Cannonball Run.”

    The narrative that speeding is as dangerous as drinking & driving is both false and insulting. Cars are more than capable of sustained high speeds, decelerating and cornering that ever before. From Honda to Hyundai to Mercedes to Porsche and so on. Cars are designed with sustained speed use in mind. How about we focus on left lane abusers, texting while driving, getting our elderly who are no longer safe drivers off the road(Not all elderly but those who's capacity has diminished are a danger to themselves and others). Lets raise the speed limits to at least 75mph on major roadways. The average flow of traffic is well over 70mph on nearly all highways. The accident rate isn't rising with it, stop the drama Governors

    • @loudfast1261
      @loudfast1261 Před 4 lety +26

      true to a limited extant, there are strict rules as to where that speeding can be done. The Autobahn itself is also of a much higher grade of road than you will ever find in the USA sadly. The tarmac has shredded tires in it resulting in superior traction control, lastly if you're approaching an accident/ road closure ahead your radio comes on and someone announces it to you. For this and other reasons you simply cannot compare it to driving standards and conditions here in the US.

      @@TheWaggishAmerican The issue is the lack of strict drivers testing. Many driving tests in many states are stupidly simple and require little to no education. This reflects in how many, many drivers often are stuck in the middle or left lane, and the countless drivers making unsafe maneuvers that are unaware of their surroundings.
      Driving is unsafe because we let uneducated and irresponsible drivers on the street. If people actually knew how to drive and the proper way to do things (even those that can handle doing "illegal" things when it is clearly safe), we would probably have speed limits of 120 MPH or higher on many highways where it is straight road with flat land for hundreds of miles. Imagine how much faster we can drive across the US?
      Like I can't lie, I very often go 10-30+ MPH over the speed limit. But it's because I'm familiar with those roads and I know how to be aware of my surroundings. I do not take risks or put other people in danger. The only time I've felt like my life was in danger was due to other people not following the rules when in areas of congested traffic.

    @andmicbro1 Před 4 lety +19

    Fun fact, the original real cannonball run (that the movie is based on) was done in protest of the newly created 55 MPH speed limit, and was meant to show that driving fast can be done safely and without putting anyone else in danger.
    Also fun fact, the German Autobahn is considered very safe and they have much lower mortality rates on their roads than in the US. They also have no speed limit on the freeway. Germans, and Europeans in general, have much better lane discipline than Americans do. Here in America people will sit in the left passing lane because they are "going the speed limit". Thus as faster traffic catches up to slower traffic we get traffic jams. Also this is why paradoxically adding more lanes to the freeway actually increases traffic, because then we just filter across all 5 lanes and go the same speed. If we exercised better lane discipline then we would likely see better safety, fewer fatalities, and less traffic.
    Another fun fact, most automobile accidents occur below 45 MPH. Most automobile accidents occur at intersections. And most highway accidents occur when cars are changing lanes.
    Speeding isn't the problem, our cultural perceptions about speeding have led us to value pulling over speeders rather than looking for dangerous drivers weaving in and out of lanes, and people not practicing good lane discipline. Also I see plenty of people not getting pulled over for towing trailers (technically illegal in my state), and I see carpool lane abusers all the time as well, and A LOT of people do it because it's easy to get away with day in and day out. You just don't speed and the cops will leave you alone.
    Now, I do think certain areas need speed limits. School zones, residential areas, and places with a lot of pedestrians should absolutely have speed limits. But on the freeway? No, we should go full Autobahn and nix limits. And teach Americans better lane discipline. And stop thinking that pulling over and ticketing someone going 5 over the limit downhill, on a road with no traffic and high visibility at 11 PM at night is actually making the roads safer. Speed traps do not make roads safer. They are only meant to raise funding for the local police. And what's more I've seen traffic appear out of nowhere, and I'm thinking there's an accident ahead. Nope! It's a cop with a radar gun and people slow down BELOW the limit because they are afraid of getting ticketed. So traffic bunches up and increases the likelihood of an accident BECAUSE a cop was sitting there, and for no other reason.
    Yeah, I go over the limit (not usually more than 5 to 10 MPH). Yeah, I get annoyed when people are blocking the passing lane. Yeah, I'm that driver. But I'm also a safe and defensive driver. I have avoided many accidents by paying attention and breaking, or moving out of the way of other drivers. I don't have any tickets on my record, speeding or otherwise. I got in a couple of accidents when I was a teenager, but my adult driving record is clean. You can drive fast and safe.

      Ry A they had people in every state looking head of them driving. Parts of the Midwest they had people in their plane looking ahead of them. They had thermal for at night. They also do rallies every year and drive way more powerful cars. This car handles better the a 918 so it’s stuck to the ground like a stock car. They are professional drivers. They also had scanners, radars, months and months of planning for construction and for weather. They waited years to find the perfect time to go. This was well thought out and they had the technology and hundreds of people spotting every inch of their way. No to mention a military grade binoculars. That was a ignorant statement not knowing how that car was built, not knowing the drivers, not knowing the tech they had on board to avoid any accident, and the preparation they went through to guarantee the most safety. You sound like a cop that that has absolutely no knowledge of cars or our community. If there was a accident it would of not been their fault. Also I hope your not a cop because you sound like one that shoots unarmed people for fun

      The real reason they wouldn't be charged is due to the hassle of charging them after-the-fact. Cross-state subpoenaing? Extradition? All for speeding and reckless driving? Not gonna happen. The most that could happen is they wind up having their driving privileges suspended in some states if they really wanted to push it.

Make it 60- 50 based on the time of day and when there's traffic and in city's but go up to 90 when it's safe to(3 lanes, little traffic, late hours) At night highways are one of the safest places since you don't have to worry about animals or people crossing more so than other roads.

It's the morons on the road who can't handle their cars, text and drive, drive slow in the fast lane, hog up the passing lane and usually have no idea about lane discipline that are more dangerous. Arne and Doug just proved that it IS SAFE to drive fast as long as you're in control of your car and you know what you're doing. I bet the people who make the speed limits have never driven anything faster than a Prius and have no idea how fast driving actually works.
