The Best spray can paint for high gloss. (Hood has imperfections)

  • We used the Rustoleum ultimate High gloss black, This wasn't my BEST spray can job but not my worse either. The hood has some imperfections but my friend trevor is going to just throw his other hood on so he wasn't too worried about it. You have to prep your surface really well make sure ALL wax/grease is removed prior to painting or you will get issues like we did with the hood.

The hood didn't come out the best due to wax still present. He is replacing the hood anyways so we didn't spend A LOT of time on fixing or correcting the hood. I know its not perfect the point was to show you how we prep/how good and glossy the new formula from Rustoleum is. The 2X Ultimate is the best shine for price paint. All hate comments will be deleted so don't waste your time. We will be putting the other hood on and will do a update.

Spray paint cans in Canada are $10-$15 each. And if you’re worried about imperfections, consider a semi gloss or a satin coat, they don’t highlight the little blemishes. Personally I’m all for the high gloss. I’d be proud and more excited for a DIY $100 paint job than a paying $3000 for one!

I've done a lot of repair jobs using spray paint on my cars over the years and people couldn't even tell It was repainted. I would typically use Dupli base color to match the original color and then apply the Dupli color lacquer clear on top of that. It always came out really shiny and clean looking.

Very nice for canned paint. Good job guys. I have some older cars that I love but use as daily drivers and of course, have to keep them up. I typically use "the ten-foot" rule: if it looks good at ten feet, you're done - esp. with older cars that are not classics but you just want to make them look decent w/o spending huge sums of money. So when you drive by people in other cars or people standing on the sidewalk, the appearance is quite good to them - AND most people just don't even notice any flaws unless they're car buffs and walk up close and stare at the paint. I have done some panels and later wet-sanded, as you remarked, and it can look really spectacular with a wet-sand. Good job.

What a great job for how quick you prepped it. Amazing! Just shows you that anyone with time, patience and a little knowledge.. can do anything. My only suggestion really is to get the trigger gun attachment for the cans because I'm sure your fingers cramped up pushing down the spray button also because a lot of the attachments can spray out like a fan to make coating easier. One more thing.. If you put a gray or white basecoat down first there will always be less visible imperfections.. but since he getting new hood doesn't matter. Keep up the excellent videos. You're awesome.

This looks REALLY nice. Quick question about the cans. I've heard that sitting them in warm water helps atomization. Have you tried that? I know you mentioned that cooler weather is best so was just wondering.

These paints can withstand 200 F degrees, an engine reaches maybe 300-400 on the block, and the engine bay is alot lower.

I little trick a ppg paint rep taught me a long time ago... Walmart blue windshield wash fluid wipe on wet wipe off dry with a blue towel is fantastic budget wax and grease remover. Way cheaper than acetone or solvent wax and grease. Try it.

    • @JamesDguy

Richard Desvousges Thanks for the tip and the dish soap didn’t do good enough so gonna have to try that on a panel. The hood is being replaced with another one but we did the paint anyways. Too much wax we didn’t get off caused issues but he will be getting the whole car redone next year out of gun but he wanted to the flaking to stop so his is temporary for him

I did the same thing to my Hyundai Tiburon. As far as the black hood and top on a blue car . But I used a 2k clear coat afterwards and I love the way it looks. Way better than it looked with the chipped clear coat.
