  • First explorations with the S4 processing the Lyra-8, and using some of the samples from my Oddment Audio "Groc" sample pack.
    I want'ed to make something dark, yet Sci-fi oriented and I think this exploration was successful in finding the correct territory.
    This device can really take you places, but is missing some critical features to make it the monster I can see inside of it.
    Oh yeah, the screen looks better than what my videos show because I am refusing to take off the factory screen protector until they have tempered glass ones available :)

    Great Abys! You are super productive! I'm falling more and more in love with that S4! It really creates perfect textures for our musical genre, disturbing and evolving!

      Maurizio!
      Thanks for watching. I actually am gonna be working on some textural pieces specifically for you. The S4 isn't ready for prime time in my rig, but, I have been using it to process incoming audio and some of my samples, and I can confirm that this S4 can get proper spooky.
      Unfortunately due to the underbaked firmware of the S4, it is lacking real sound designing power and it's mostly a limited, one-trick pony of a texture box at the moment haha. The next few firmware releases should drastically improve the experience of working with it.

    S4 has arrived. Exciting. Sounding good already; looking forward to your explorations.

      Hey Greg!
      I am looking forward to exploring more with the S4. Unfortunately there are some massive bugs (a big one I reported today), and it's not quite ready for primetime.
      It's great for drone work though! I am gonna be restricting my rig to the S4+Lyra (Maybe a strega too) so I can read through the manuals and learn them together. I am working on finding my sonic territory with the S4 at the moment, it's just very feature rich on the sound design side yet, the bones of it are pretty solid and it'll improve over the next year or so.

    Really good. I can surely hear this in a sci-fi score, a space station engineering room scene in which the pilot tries to isolate a mysterious, unknown mechanical issue that is sending the station off course.

      Thanks for watching my first stumbling steps with the S4 haha. I can't wait for the next firmware, and am eagerly waiting the scenes functionality to be implements so I can actually start composing and arranging patterns with it.
      I'm working with some field recording samples I have recorded, and the results have been interesting so far, but nothing I am wanting to record and publish quite yet lol

    this actually kind of reminds me of a more articulated aleatory music where the lines talk to each other at randomly varying counter-points which make it interesting and grabs the attention.

      Hey LBZ!
      Thanks for listening with a critical ear and educating me on something I've never heard of before haha
      The magic sauce in this one is the S-4 for sure. Although this device can't clock with other devices yet, it still has an internal clock that allows me to de-drone my instrument into something more rhythmic and unique.
      This is something that I will continue to grow with, as it is giving me a lot more "hands-on" creative options than I had previously.
      I am still hoping that the S-4 gets loaded up with a few granular engines and new effects algorithms over the coming months. Once this is fully featured, this will be a "desert island instrument."
      As it stands currently, it has a permanent place in my setup and will be used in everything lol
      I am hoping that the reports I have heard from other users about a hardware design flaw is not accurate. If it is, there is a chance I'll have to send my unit back in if there is a hardware revision

      Hey Moon!
      I am still learning about these two instruments, but I absolutely love the pair of them!
      Eventually, I am gonna have to bring in my Strega coven to see what I can pull out.
      This S4 has a lot of capability even if it's unfinished in its current state. I can't wait to grow into it as it matures :)

    Yessssss ✨✨✨✨super trippy 2:25 🛸🛸is the S4 creating all the sound from sampling the lyra? Like a real-time effects looper.

    • @AbyssalPantheon
      @AbyssalPantheon  Před 3 měsíci

      Hey Jon!
      In this one, I am only processing the lyra on track 1. Tracks 2-4 are using samples I recorded for Oddment Audio's instrument as I wanted to hear them in a granular unit haha.
      I used 2 strega samples and one from my O-Coast (which I sold).
      I'm gonna be in an exploratory phase for quite some time using 2 pieces of gear that are brand new to me lmao

    Woow! Subscribed! where do reverb effects come from? Great sound design!

    • @AbyssalPantheon
      @AbyssalPantheon  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hey Urlu!
      Thanks so much for the sub! I am glad that you enjoyed the sound design!
      For the reverb aspect, I used the internal reverb of the S-4, and I used the Mercury7 from Meris, which is (in my sound design) a massive dark cathedral reverb at the end of my chain. I usually have it set for an octave down with a decently high-level pitch vector.
      The merc7 is based on an older reverb called the Lexicon 224, and that was the primary reverb from the 1980s bladerunner (one of my favorite films). I have a software emulation from Arturia called LX-24 that I use a lot as a master reverb at around 15% wet as a glue for a lot of my work.
      The Merc7 adds a dark sci-fi feeling, and with the right settings, it's a very ominous reverb.
      I also use the walrus slöer, but not for my darker tracks, that reverb is vintage level noisy and pretty warm, so it doesn't fit well with my sterile sound design haha

    Sounds great….what your thoughts about the torso? Greetings mate🖖👽

    • @AbyssalPantheon
      @AbyssalPantheon  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hey Somnambule!
      So far, I think it has great bones, but it isn't fully cooked. It's missing a lot of features that would make it a powerhouse, but the next firmware drops in June and should address the lack of midi implementation (outside of note and CC).
      The granular engine is not great and lacks basic controls you'd expect from granular synths. I am hoping they port in MI Clouds or something, so there is actual sound sculpting capability.
      Outside of those minor things, it's a textural monster, and I really enjoy exploring sound with it! It will mature over time and get much more complex, so I am glad to be able to work with it in its infancy.
      Great for drone and ambient work. I haven't messed with the looping aspect yet, as I am doing sound processing with my own samples and field recordings at the moment. I can make some sinister sounding atmospheres with this, and it's a joy to tweak while playing a looped sample.
      If you can live with the lack of polish and bare bones feature set, it's a buy. If you want something more powerful and fleshed out, I'd probably wait a few more month to let them cook the firmware.

    How do you make the arpeggio on S4? What effect is it?

    • @AbyssalPantheon
      @AbyssalPantheon  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hey Gio!
      Thanks for watching.
      In this piece, I was primarily using modulation on the filter cutoff, and resonance with the filter set to a minor scale.
      There is no arpeggio menu on the S-4 but it can be achieved with some modulation assignments on key parameters in the mosaic and rings materials.

    I think, or I believe, that you can stay here for hours and hours and you feel like time stands still. If you then look out the window, 10 years have passed. At least that's how it is for me sometimes, very often 🤪👌🎧✨🤍💫

      Thanks for watching!
      Yes, that is absolutely true lol. I probably shouldn't be recording anything while I am exploring sound as they ultimately end up being long and somewhat uninteresting haha, but I figure it's better to show the progress of learning the instrument. Down the road, I hope to look back on these earlier pieces to see where I have progressed with the instruments haha
