- One person was killed and around 15 others injured in northwestern Switzerland on Monday after a "likely tornado" struck a city in the Jura mountains, causing significant damage.
The storm hit the watchmaking city of La Chaux-de-Fonds in the Neuchatel region bordering France.

as somebody who lives in Switzerland and not far from this i can say it was a rough few days of weather and more so yesterday morning.
to those saying never heard of this happening in Switzerland or Europe yes it very much does happen just not as big as this, ive seen 40c temps all week and go to sleep at night and wake up to snow in July and August and it be -10c, if seen -20c temps on Christmas eve and snow 2 meters deep and wakign up christmas day with +25c and by the end of the day half the snow be gone only to wake up the next day to -15c temps and it snowing again.
Switzerland has some of the strangest weather i have see in the world, people dont understand that the warm Med weather hits the cold from the north on the mountains and it goes completely nuts at the drop of a hat., i ride motorbikes year round on the alps and travel for a living, ive seen some things that people wouldnt believe if i didnt have a Video of it to show them. hell i would think people are mad if i was told but this please is madness with weather sometimes.
so yeah this is semi normal but not with this force in a short space of time,

That was not a Tornado, or like a Tornado! Same type of storm hit Slovenia and Croatia. Strong wind and very heavy rain(from almost one direction), it's like a land hurricane or what they call Derecho in US. I was outside and watched it all, location Zagreb, Croatia. There was no any thunder or lightning.

I live in Southern Arkansas USA I have had my house destroyed I had my barn destroyed I have lived through tornadoes all of my life they are very scary and they are very dangerous if you will go into a bathroom or a closet somewhere that does not have a window so the glass does not break over you I have put a mattress over myself and my children I just hang on Baby until it's over with?🙏🙏🙏

They do happen in Europe, but just less frequently than in the US.
However, this was NOT a tornado, but this was a microburst, even thouigh the video does not mention it.
Stop being ignorant, there are around 300 to 400 tornadoes a year in Europe, most of them are just not notable (very weak, or not seen or spotted), there are medieval reports of tornadoes seen. The first reported tornado was in year 200, in Italy.

Never heard of this type of weather occurring in Switzerland before.
Likely a 'tornado' of all things.
For all us Europeans, these new extremes are going to hit us very hard because we don't generally have basements in which to hide until danger passes. We sit in our homes, built to withstand normal conditions, and hope that they survive.
City planners are going to have to realise soon that planting skinny little individual trees in cities and towns is not the way to go. They are top heavy and vulnerable, snap like matchsticks, and become part of a potentially deadly wind-blown debris.
It would be far better to have 'larger blocks' of shorter multi-stemmed trees and shrubs known for their flexibility. Willows could be coppiced regularly to regenerate long, whippy new stems that will bend and not break in the wind. The worst damage they'll have is to lose their leaves and twist a few stems.
To have blocks of shorter plantations will create shelterbelts for at least some properties in certain circumstances.
