This episode we're breaking down the Jordan Peele movie US.
The film came hot off the heels of Peele's best picture nominee Get Out, and though it didn't quite achieve the acclaim of it's predecessor there's still a lot to talk about in regards to it.
The movie is filled to the bring with little easter eggs and hidden details that make it a really interesting watch.
Throughout this video we'll be going through the ins and outs of the film including all of it's meanings and messages.
There will be heavy spoilers here so if you haven't had a chance to watch the movie yet and don't want anything ruined then I highly recommend that you turn off now.

With that out the way, thank you for clicking this, now let's get into our breakdown of Us.
    US Plot Recap
Ok so US Follows Adelaide Wilson a woman who goes on vacation with her family to their holiday home in Santa Cruz.
Upon arriving there Adelaide becomes haunted by a memory in which a doppelganger attacked her in a fun house when she was a child. She initially just seems paranoid but her worst fears are realised when a duplicate of her family attacks them in the home at night.
These are called the Tethered and slowly these copies of humanity have started an uprising. They are led by the copy of Adelaide known as Red and she becomes the main antagonist of the film.
The family fight to survive and eventually the younger of the group Jason is kidnapped by Red. Adelaide descends into a secret door hidden in the funhouse and she finds the home of the tethered below it. Here she kills Red and rescues Jason but it's revealed in the end that Adelaide was actually the original Doppelganger and that she switched places with Red, taking her life in the process.
That's a basic plot summary but there's a lot going on in the movie.
    11:11
Before going through everything we need to discuss the significance of the number 11 which appears throughout the film at several points.
This is actually a reference to Jeremiah chapter and verse 11:11 from the King James Bible and in that the following passage can be found.
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.
This basically discusses Red's quest and how she wishes to bring doom to the surface dwellers. Now why the number itself is also important is because 11 is a palandrome, a number that is the same forward as it is back. It looks like a mirror and this reflective nature is given further weight by 11 11 once more reflecting the 11s and so on and so on and so on.
The Wilsons themselves can be seen as somewhat of a reflection as there are two males in the family and two females, two adults, two children and generally there's this idea of mirroring that is seen within them and their tethered copies.
Things above ground are mirrored by those below and throughout the piece things line up and are seen as almost complete reflections.
As for the film itself, mirroring and this idea of 11 is seen throughout.

I get exactly what he's saying in this movie.. he's talking about how every black person, at home has a different personality than the one we portray to the world. The "real" family is just trying to make it, defending themselves. But because of their pasts, and being washed down, after making it to the top, only to have to do it all over again, has resulted in a different family, and individuals. They are no longer defending themselves, they're ready for war, and to fight anyone, even themselves to stay on top. The red is the symbol of the blood they shed to make it to the top.

It’s not an United States reference. Peels gave a watch list before Get Out, and he specifically said red and blue was for the Matrix. Red pill was having your eyes open and knowing the truth, blue pill was to continue to buy into the lie/being naive and not knowing what’s going on. That’s why in Get Out the black people are in blue, and the girlfriend wears blue too until the auction thing, she switches into red. Same for this movie

Adelaide may have been born underground, but Red's the villain. To call her bad for being born tethered, or even for pulling a switcheroo as a young child kinda misses the point of the movie. The kind, mild-mannered woman turns out to be one of the "evil" tethered, while the homicidal maniac plotting world domination was originally just a regular person from the surface. Who's to say the tethered would have ever killed anyone if someone from the surface didn't orchestrate such a violent uprising?

I always thought that the white rabbit was a reference to the rabbit found in Alice In Wonderland, who emerged from beneath the ground, and a nod to the concept of falling down 'the rabbit hole', both literally (with the journey underground to the HQ) but also as a metaphor for being transported into a surreal or mirrored state. A further notion to support this could come from the scene where the rabbit's head is cut off - possibly referencing the Queen Of Heart's infamous demands to cut the white rabbit's head off, symbolising that Red is a more dominant figure, or a personification of the Queen Of Hearts.
There are also links between Alice In Wonderland being used in mind-control programs specialising in fragmenting or 'honeycombing' the mind to create schizophrenia or alternate personas, detaching one's mindset from reality, similar to theories surrounding the link between the Wizard Of Oz and MKULTRA. Quite disappointed 'White Rabbit' by Jefferson Airplane wasn't used as part of the soundtrack on that note haha..

Good note on the White Rabbit being ordered by the red Queen of Hearts to be decapitated and how that's paralleled in US. Well, they're not Adelaide's kids. Adelaide was above ground since the incident with the real Adelaide. She switched places with Red/Real Adelaide when they were kids, in the fun house.
She cries and nurtures them because she cares for them (because they're like her). She cared for her family (her WHOLE family).

This could be a reach, but in the scene where the family are eating lunch upon arriving at the beach house, Adelaide is eating strawberries, whereas the others are eating some fast food. I associated this to the story Red told about the girl and her tethered shadow and how the tethered girl had to eat rabbit meat bloody and raw. This may have been a foreshadowing that Adelaide wasn't really who she appeared to be.

They were created by humans and yet casted below ground like they didn’t matter. It’s revenge on humanity, not just Adelaide. Hence why once they kill their original selves, they go join the “hands across America” line, which was supposed to be a statement fighting against homelessness and world hunger. Well their “hands across America “ was a statement to the world as well.

I believe the son is a tethered. When the burned son essentially kills himself. Adelaide is so consumed by it. I was confused because she should be worrying about her own son. Maybe she was cuz that was her actual son. Red also doesn't kill the son she takes. In addition to the son not knowing the magic trick, I have to watch the movie again but the son says he's making sand tunnels which was very unusual. He also has no rhythm like his mother.

A couple things. (I know I'm commenting way late but I just discovered this channel).
    1. At the beginning of the movie we see a cricket ball on the shelves next to the TV, used as a weapon in Get Out.
    2. The song Adelaide and Red dance to is called "Pas de Deux" in the soundtrack. It's a dance for 2 people in ballet.
    3. 11:11 can also foreshadow the death of half the doubles by the end of the movie. There will only be one of each, no longer 2.
    4. The white rabbit and mirror imagery also make allusions to Alice in Wonderland and through the Looking glass.
    5. White rabbits are associated with magic, which is Jason's hobby. He's also holding a rabbit at the end of the movie.

  • @DanteYewToob
    @DanteYewToob Před 3 lety +19

I like the theory that I read somewhere that someone helped the Tethered. Someone funded them and provided them with the weapons and jumpsuits and helped coordinate the massive simultaneous rise.
I think something like that would be cool to explore if they ever do a sequel.. who would help them? Why? Is it the government, or a rich solo benefactor..
Because outfitting the entire population of America with scissors and jumpsuits wouldn't be cheap or easy. Those were nice scissors too... no joke. I have a pair that are decent and they cost 60$ at the craft store.. that's big money being spent to end America.
Could it be a foreign government? Or is this a global conspiracy.
I really wanna know more. Sad we'll probably never know.

    • @bblove3851
      @bblove3851 Před 3 lety +8

Sorry I'm kinda late to answer you but yes I believe that theory very much. The fact that the son had went missing one summer and reappeared. And the magic trick he forgot to do, its cause he switched places. That is why the other one burned his face, cause since they are tethered and the one that got switched forgot the trick upstairs, the other one burned himself cause of it. I saw it in another video and it all makes sense to me. Also at the end when the son put the mask on, it's like he is saying the rest of em will never know our secret mom. Have you notice how close she is to the son compared to the daughter throughout the movie? I think its cause they are one of the same.

Love the video! Just as a slight correction, there were 2 things that were just a bit off. Firstly, the reason why Red spoke the way she did wasn't exactly because she hadn't in a while, it was because in the beginning her dopple-ganger strangled her damaging her larynx (the vocal cords) this was supposed to be a sign that she was indeed the real Adelaide. Secondly, Adelaide knowing where the key was under that rock didn't necessarily mean she'd been there before since she was abducted as a child and that's the house Red got with her husband, what it DOES show, is that Adelaide thinks like humans do, since its common practice for families to place keys under rocks or mats, and Red likely learned this after swapping places with her as a child and therefore kept the practice going. Just wanted to toss those facts out there to help!

It's also an allegory of the American Dream. Obstacles are put in place so that unless you control the water (wealth), all your climbing is fruitless. You never get past the spout to control your own water

When I was a kid I would imagine myself being kidnapped in my mirror but only on the other side. In my story all mirrors only reflected another dimension. I had to find and rescue myself for mirrors to go back to normal but then everyone knew that it was a completely different world. I also fell into a campfire when I was very young. I was wearing a Micheal Jackson T shirt. This movie absolutely terrified me. I actually left the theater before I even saw the end. I had to rewatch it later.

The thing you overlooked, was the Mirroring the Tethered had to their originals... This is why they are all doing random things in the tunnels, and have no control. As well as why the kid was able to get his Copy to walk backwards into the Fire.
It isn't until the Tethered kill their Originals, that the become Untethered, and can fully have Freewill.
But because Red had told the tethered "they would all stands in the Sun Holding-Hands together...." This was their first "choice" once they had that freewill

Also to add: this is the metaphor Red is using when she Cuts the Paper-figures at the end...this is why they ate called "The Tethered"...
      Not the "11:11" you referenced

In Micheal Jackson movie "Moonwalker".. I remember he dressed as a rabbit to hide from the fans and reporters. Then in then song 'Speed Demon' the same rabbit came to life and danced with Michael on the movie.

The daughter did not want the thriller to shirt... The #11 shirt was a tye dye greatful dead type shirt, the father was handed the thriller shirt (for what reason idk) which explains his facial expression when he shows it to his daughter, who clearly was not impressed judging by her facial expression...
