00:00 Tote Bags Introduction
The tote bag is perhaps one of the simplest forms of a carrying tool. It has a simple body that is closed in three sides. It is open at the top and has handles on opposite sides that make it easy for you to carry in hand or over the shoulder.
00:53 Early History of Tote Bags
During Medieval times, it was common for both women and men to carr soft bags. They typically wore this over the shoulder so that the opening was accessible at hip level, sometimes with a flapped opening and sometimes without.
or the majority of people, these bags would have been made of sturdy and inexpensive cloth but there were others who could afford to carry more expensive leather bags, and as is always the case, the very wealthy could afford to use bags that adorned with intricate designs and embroidery.
1:48 Modern Tote Bags Take Shape
05:23 Should Men Carry Tote Bags?
Although both men and women have historically always carried bags and continue to do so today,, since the 60s, we see the tote bag as a more female-forward item. There are several reasons why this might be the case.
08:13 Quality Tote Bags Materials: a. Leather
08:50 b. Sturdy Canvas or Waxed Cotton
09:20 Quality Tote Bag Design & Features
This is the area in which we look towards men's bag carrying history for some inspiration namely keeping things simple. You're going to want to keep your tote bag free of anything that might prematurely age it such as trendy logos, details, or anything that draws undue attention to the bag in a way that reduces its versatility.
The features present in a tote bag will determine how versatile it is for you. Of course, the main feature should be its ability to easily carry medium to large items. So it needs to have a generous volume without being cumbersome, ideally with a flat bottom to enable ease of storage within the bag itself.
12:09 So, Timeless or Trend?
It is safe to say that at the moment, due to the shorter length of time being carried by the modern man, they are a trend with a strong possibility of becoming timeless.

You earned a new subscriber in me!
No need for tote bags, a traditional gentleman has servants to carry his luggage.
😀😁😂🤣😃😄😅😆😉😋😎😍😘😗!!!
Of course 😂
I recently got one in black leather and I love it. Tote bags fill the gap between business and casual when wearing a backpack is too much. When I‘m going shopping or just going for a walk for my personal style the tote bag is the best option since I‘m not a big fan of messenger bags.
Anything that carries my stuff, appropriate for the occasion, and is from natural material is my go to- I do not care if it is on trend or not.
Yet, here you are..lol.Grow up, please.

[eyes scruffy orange rucksack I've been using for 50 years] Totally agreed :)
When I went looking for a fullsized backpack, I got lucky and hit a very old leather model someone was giving away. It's a beautiful piece, and I don't care if it's in fashion or not, it's just right for me, and it will probably outlive me.

So glad I found your channel! Came for tote bag advice and now Im stoked to deep dive your content. Thanks for keeping it real 💯
I had everything from briefcases to hiking backpack packs and the one thing that does everything and goes with everything is my Filson Tote. Mines in Navy and basically goes everywhere as a formal diaper bag to a beach bag to my office daily to my shopping bag to everything. Simultaneously masculine and feminine, I believe the Filson Tote is the ultimate bag.
My tote tote bag is black, made out of canvas, sturdy, has adjustable straps to be worn on the shoulder or carried like a brief case, and has loads of pockets. It’s one of my favorite things I own and it has lots of utility.
Could i get a link or its brand? I need something like that
Come across this video randomly and I watched hidupz. OMG your closet is every women’s dream! Love your voice and the way you talk

I have had my Kenneth Cole tote bag for years my Mom gave me as a present it is great.
I am very happy I have found this channel. To all of you THANK YOU! have a wonderful Christmas
Everyone will have a preference on shape, etc, but totes, backpacks, or briefcases ARE practical!!! Form follows function.

That Ikea/Balenciaga comparison was gold! Just goes to prove one of the many mantras on this channel, cost does not necessarily mean quality
Did you see the theft of all those Balenciaga bags out on Long Island?

Man bag
I have a leather satchel which I bought in Spain. It’s very stylish and is great for everyday and formal use. The man bag whichever style you choose is here to stay.
When I was a Retail Supervisor I used use a messenger bag for a briefcase, and separate laptop-printer briefcase. so I carried two. Early 90s.
When I worked as a Fleet Manager for a Dealership, I used a Wilson leather back pack to carry Inventory list and price book. most of my customers where Credit Union Buyer services located in Credit Union bank location all over ATL. late 90s&00s. I still have that back pack and use for my lap top.
I use a old Gap tube still bag it has a carry hand and a strap. very light enough to carry misc. items, only use it when I collect rent.
Yeah. These bags looks very pretty
Thank you this I look at coach Feild tote 40
The Fjallraven Haulpack No.1 is a phenomenal option, as it is a tote as well as a pack. Picked one up in Paris and love it.
I would love to see Raphael do a review or is it worth it for “Col Littleton” certainly a little bit more utilitarian or rustic than your high-end bag I have recently purchased two, am very happy with them. hand made in the USA with a bit of old world charm..
Lovely green long sleeve polo
I’ve always believed it’s how you carry it. Don’t be too conscious and just rock it for its purpose. It’s a handy, convenient, and stylish bag. Whether two-tone or just plain leather, I think they’re great for both men and women
Dad carried 1 in the 80s for his personal gear (white sail cloth). He worked as a House Painter.
I started using a bag in the '70s. One ensemble I had included sailor-like pants with a single watch pocket and a long sleeve shirt with no pocket. Mainly, this was the '70s. Remember Gunga Din? Coach had a Gurka bag in water buffalo. And I wonder, did Indiana Jones carry his whip in a tote bag? Today, one can choose a Man-bag by Nutsac. But I'm thinking of using my Domke camera bags next. Good topic.
I sure enjoy your channel. Any chance you'll do a video about "how to wear an ascot" ? Thanks 😊
Wonderful presentation 👍🏾
But is there any video presentation discussing shoulder bags (aka “man bag”)?
When is the new Fort Belvedere tote coming out then? 😉 That would really be something!
Agree and I am sure that if they did they would make it stylish for men that does not look very feminine
If your shopping for a quality bag of any type you owe it to yourself to check out Tusting’s offerings out of the UK. It will sting your wallet but your grandkids will fight over it when you pass on. Their customer service is insane. My girlfriends 40th bday bag was soiled by a jealous dog and the owner of Tusting personally re finished it and express shipped it back to the US for free.
I have an ettinger canvas and leather tote which I use for work - it’s perfect.
For shopping/laundry I use my ikea bags - they are cheap, functional and ideal. They are not acceptable for work however.
The bag Raphael is carrying looks great! Where does it come from ?
It's from Frank Clegg :)
Longchamp caters for all tastes, sizes and budgets. Elegant and timeless
Tote bags are awesome and I feel that everyone should have a tote bag. I think that we need more tote bags , everyone needs to have a strong tote bag in there car or truck.
Hi Kyle, may I please ask who makes that caramel-brown leather laptop sleeve 10:18? Thank you.
Raphael’s leather tote bag really was a murse.
Good sir…you are one classy dude
Where can I purchase an attaché bag at a reasonable price. Maybe a few hundred max?
Longchamp Pliage bags are a great unisex choice in dark colors.
Absolument
I use the LL Bean heavy cotton black tote
What bag is that @ 10:34?
Can someone please let me know the brand/model of the boots at 8:40?

One of my college professors had enough of overloaded pockets, and bought a purse -- a square leather unisex bag. That was back in 1975! He said he saw no reason why only women should be allowed to use such a convenient item. :)
I have a couple of excellent leather bags... one is more briefcase style with a carry strap, the other is made to either carry in hand or wear as a backpack. I have no idea where they came from but they're both quite old, attesting to the durability of the materials and format.
(So what do I mostly use? Canvas swag bags from trade shows, and a nylon rucksack I've had since college. **sigh** )
My father was a very manly European man and he wore a man purse: dark brown leather. Back in the 80s. Nowadays it would fit a large iPad. It was a thing of beauty! I can still picture him, tall slender in a dark blue suit, light blue shirt, tie and his man purse. Women turned their heads when he walked by only to be stared up and down by his two female bodyguards (my sister and I). He seemed totally oblivious to how good looking he was! May God rest his soul. And of course, beauty is totally subjective!
One again, in Japan the man purse is in common use. Surprisingly, it's more popular amongst the older generation of men who tend to be a little more classically masculine than the younger.
I have no problem with man purses, I don't like them because I'm terrified I'll put it down somewhere and forget it. Of course, living in Japan there's a high chance I'll get it back with all my valuables still inside.
@@findingwithterry My professor's had a shoulder strap that he wore crosswise, so he couldn't absently set it down and lose it.
Here in Montana you'd likely get it back intact too -- it's great to live in such a place!
@@klimtkahlo He sounds like a wonderful person. Thanks for the neat description.
You’ll never catch me with a tote bag unless I’m at the grocery store. My Filson Journeyman goes everywhere with me.
I would really love to see a video of: “The correct posture (when stand) for a gentleman.
When I am just standing there waiting for something, I don’t know the correct posture (if any) I should use, can a true gentleman like you, help me?

Love your channel. But I disagree about a tote bag for a bloke. I have a classic leather briefcase for work and a leather backpack for casual/travel activities. Unfortunately, tote bag has become synomous with ladies and not sure if my wife will approve me carrying one as well :)
There's nothing wrong with being a fancy boy with a nice European carry-all.
Back in the days when clothing didn't have pockets; totes were "Totes"
😎👍👍👍
"Timeless".
PROOF: Men carried a "tote bag" (AKA: "purse"; "haversack"; "possibles bag"; "Messenger Bag" among other names) for eons before pockets were invented.
Many continue to do so, so they don't weigh their trousers down or have bulging pockets.
Hi I wanted to ask if anyone ever shopped a bag from Cettire .. Thank you guys (Y)
I really enjoy bags, I have several different. 2gym bags a travel bag, a Trunk bag, the LL bean bag 2 golf club bags backpack computer bag, But would I want a man bag ? NA
Hello! My wife always sees that I watch your videos and she likes your channel as well. She likes how I mix my wardrobe and make a new outfit every single time out of my existing closet. She just wishes you guys had a sister channel that focuses on woman clothing. Would you guys consider hiring women and start a woman’s channel?
Hi Frederick, glad to hear you both enjoy the channel! We've actually addressed that exact point before:www.gentlemansgazette.com/classic-style-for-women/?
I would love that too. I would love to see classic, clean, practical and functional clothes and accessories. I love pockets on clothes and I love watches and where loafers more than heels but also heels with low wide heel. I could definitely see a sister channel working out. I just hope us slightly older women are addressed with more practical clothes and shoes with our foot problems and things. Thank you.
My own, small collection of "tote bags" is entirely utilitarian, including two *folding* totes designed & used as reusable grocery bags. I've never seen them as a fashion item, and I've given away more of them than I've used.
Some guys can pull it off. Depends on the rest of the fit and the bag
I don`t want anything. Just keep doing what you're doing. And tell everyone I said Thank you.
I prefer to keep my hands free unless the tote is for groceries and I'm walking to the car. I like to wear messenger bags and backpacks if I need to carry something that won't fit in my pants pockets.
Men and women can wear any bags. Most things are viewed as unisex nowadays. Just depends what you're comfortable with
My edc consists of keys, phone, wallet. I would never wear clothes that'd need me to wear a bag to haul my EDC.
👍🏻
3:30 5:30 12:01 Tks, N
I would really appreciate and it wouldn’t cost much, nor be obtrusive, a trolly sleeve (strap) on all tote bags.
I prefer a "saddle bag" or back pack. Just appears more professional
I feel the opposite. Anytime i see a backpack I think child. Totes seem more polished and refined. They are neither masculine or femine. It's form following function.
Go for it and have fun..is it a trend??? In my humble opinion..YES..but that's okay?.peace
Canvas totes are good for groceries and the beach. Leather totes are too effeminate, especially worn on the shoulder. I prefer a briefcase/laptop bag or weekender bag 99% of the time.
Recently I got one and loved it, pretty practical, affordable, very suitable for different designs and customizations and it's also very practical, just throw my stuff inside, and good to go. They can be styled pretty well making out as the summer bag as I live in a tropical country, to me it's more of a trend, but can be very useful for casual-chic outfits.
I adore my basic cotton tote bag but I've been told I look 'camp' or 'feminine' :/
BTW I’ve had a couple of guys say “hey I like your MURSE.” I always respond with “it’s a purse, call it what it it, and thanks, I love it as well, excellent utility.” The convo ends there or moves on to other topics. I don’t have a problem with toxic idiots, because I reject the shaming that they are trying to throw at me.
don't let others' insecurities drag you down

I have a Ralph lauren black backpack tote. I use it for travel, highly stylish & fashionable. I love it, wish I bought two¡♤🙌🏽🙏🏽
Who's Rockin these, just use it...no matter trend...
You might get called "_ag" or "fad follower"...but if it's your thing do the thing you do...no matter what are labels...atleast that's what I do...
Definitely timeless. Handles MUST be long enough to sling over your shoulder yet short enough that the bag doesn't drag on the ground when carried in hand. That said my favorite is still a small single strap duffel with sports bags a close second
Or better yet, a long strap for over the shoulder _and_ a briefcase-style handle, with a pocket convenient to tuck in the long strap. Another method is the strap that can be quickly doubled to halve its length (usually achieved with a clip and a D-ring).
Trend. Tote bags for men aka women's purse.
That thumbnail was very unflattering.
No. Messenger bag for business. Weekender bag for leisure.
messenger bags are femine. totes are unisex.
I really hope a backpack will be invented one day that looks good with a suit...sometimes you just need to have your hands free. Why not look good while you do?
Samsonite has lots of such bagpacks
AZOVSTAL
I'm surprised that no mention was made about tote bags being a classic for the Japanese gentleman, for example. Perhaps a broader-than-the-US overlook at gentlemen could be a useful!
I have to disagree with some of this. I don’t see how a tote bag is necessarily better than a backpack, which I find very practical for carrying my work laptop and accessories through the airport or to the office. If a tote bag can be made with men in mind instead of women, surely a backpack can be made with working adults in mind instead of students and children.
I have such a backpack -- soft leather in a natural finish, looks very nice, and made so you can either carry it like a briefcase or wear it like a backpack. The main disadvantage of a backpack is that you have to sling the thing entirely on and off to reach the contents, rather than having it ready to hand with no fuss. And snug-fitted backpacks tend to not get along very well with outdoor coats. OTOH carrying in hand is more tiring and rather more likely to be set down and forgotten. So both have advantages, depending on your use. (I normally prefer a backpack, myself.)
Good point. I like both. My girlfriend/now wife got me a classy looking backpack made with nice materials that I love. And I'm also on the hunt for a new tote bag because while I don't mind backpacks, I'd rather not wear one when I dress up in a suit or blazer.
However, for me a key point when looking for a tote bag is for it to not lean to feminine (admittedly, whatever that means to me).
@@findingwithterry Yeah, know what you mean. It's all quite individual, and what looks classy on one guy can look fem on the next (like how some guys can look macho in a kilt, and others can't).
More stylish than backpacks, for sure
Totes look good on men if they are boxy and well worn canvas or twill not leather.
It's a Murse 🤣
If you are going to use this for anything more than groceries, they seem perfect for carrying sanitary napkins, makeup, pepper spray and an extra pair of pantyhose in case you get a runner. It is a big purse. I predict a future video on glitter and bath bombs appearing soon from the Gazette. If you want to carry a big bag, get a duffle bag.
Man it’s a bag why assign it to a gender should be a question of the bag not who is wearing it that doesn’t matter
Totes are too girly. If I see one more guy helping his wife with her Christian Dior tote in the airport, jeez. LL Bean only if you’re going to the beach or on a boat. I gave my son old Coach leather brief cases & mail pouches. Those & a regular vinyl backpack & he’s set. Tried to give him a leather one from Brooks Brothers & he said no, it’s a pocketbook. 🤣
EXACTLY ......a tote screams pocketbook..........
It’s 2022 dawg some dudes like to wear totes and thats cool shame on u
@@judeevans5868 I suppose. Shopping & what not
@UCdfOSzZiJxAccL1bd0eFKrQ .....seems you're doing it in a manly/masculine way . i don't think men should wear pockiebooks , as an accessory for any reason . men should not need to walk around with that much stuff in a pockiebook...........
What’s missing from this robust historical style narrative is how men’s style and choices are profoundly limited in proportion to how much they feel their masculinity is threatened by a colour. Their loss.
Agreed. We could also argue that if you really wanted to man-up classic gentleman style, you would wear heels, tights, resplendant colors, and long permed hair a la Louis XIV, a man who ruled a Kingdom which he took to new heights through numerous wars and declared himself the State.
There's a lot of insecure men here! lol
Geh
Looks like a handbag
I'm sorry, but tote bags are for groceries. I just can't warm up to a gentleman carrying a canvas tote.
tote bag makes me look like women
I would say no because they look like a girls bag.
Men using tote bags has long been the norm in Japan. I have lived here for 20+ years now and I remember telling my Japanese friend I wouldn't be caught dead with one of those. I definitely ate those words.
I'm in-between tote bags right now but I enjoyed the last one I used regularly and am currently eyeing my next one.
Depending on your needs you can go for the minimalist one compartment style or ones with partitions, main top zipper, various pockets and removable sleeves/pouches, and even adjustable strap for shoulder vs hand carry.
In the US, the market is rather limited but in Japan and Asia, there are tons of totes targeting men (or unisex) in all sorts of retailers. So, dudes can find a bag that goes well with the hair on their chests ;-)
