  • Blazblue is an immensly popular fighting game series, but you probably shouldn't play Calamity Trigger, the very first game. Why? I hope you have 3 hours to spare for me to explain that.
Join me in an exhaustive, insanely long, detailed retrospective about Blazblue: Calamity Trigger, first game in the franchise released on PS3, Xbox 360 in the early 2000s. At least originally.
This will be 1 in 4 videos, with each video covering one of the mainline games. This is for Calamity Trigger, 2 is for Continuum Shift, 3 is for Chronophantasma, and 4 is the Central Fiction. No idea on the release dates for the other 3!
I'll be taking a look at the 2014 PC version of CT released on Steam. Why this release game out so late is something you will find out early on. Yes, it did take me just about 3 hours to explain all this. It might've been even longer
My name is Peter, and I cover strange and interesting video games every single week. Join me in my journey to talk you ear off about every single one!

This Reminds me why BlazBlue is currently my favorite fighting game story for several of these reasons:
    1) Character development for MANY of the cast- One of my biggest problems with fighting games stories is that the characters don't progress throughout the story. For example, up into this point in the Tekken series with 7, Kazuya is STILL a one dimensional villain who will kill anyone who is an obstacle to achieve his goal of world domination , just see Kazuya's Tekken 5 ending where he kills his own grandfather, and laughs like an absolute madman after doing it. Another example is in KOF, where Mai Shiranui's entire character is one who just wants to get married to and get seeded by Andy. However, in BlazBlue we have Ragna, a character who starts out in the beginning of the story as a kid who is treated as a lab rat due to the unusual circumstances of his birth, with the lab being controlled by an authoritarian government, and it's ONLY after years of torture he finally escapes that lab and makes friends at an orphanage, which should result in him finally having a normal life, only for that peaceful life to be shattered when his family is attacked for similar reasons related to his birth by a member of that SAME authoritarian government, which results in him being severely injured. These traumatic events happening back to back result in our main protagonist being an absolute edgelord, since he comes to the conclusion that all the bad things that happened in his life was the result of people in power who would harm the weak to sustain their power. This realization results in him having a cynical view on life, and believes that the "ends justifies the means" is the ultimate truth, and would become a rebel who's goal is to destroy this authoritarian government that mistreated him and his family so badly and would harm ANYONE who got in his way if he could achieve his goal no matter how morally wrong the action he took was ( in one instance, Ragna destroys a branch of the authoritarian government of one of the cities in his quest for vengeance knowing full well that this branch is needed to help maintain proper weather in the city the branch is in due to changes in the enviornment ( since BlazBlue series primarily takes place in a post- apocalyptic setting where much of the planet is uninhabitable without special equipment), and this branch is needed to help the people live comfortably in the area, but our spiky haired protagonist says "screw it cause mah vengeance matters more", and destroys the branch, which results in freezing temperatures which effected peoples ( this includes women and children) life styles in a negative way, and this is one of the MANY instances where Ragna is shown to be a selfish short sighted individual. It's ONLY after he meets key figures throughout the story, where he FINALLY starts questioning himself and becomes a better person and values the lives of everyone equally. Resulting in a character who is not the same mentally by the end of the series arc. There are currently four Mainline BlazBlue Games in the series and Ragna's arc is a big focus in all four of them.
    2) ALL arcade endings and story paths are canon- One of the most frustrating things I have with other fighting games like the earlier Tekken, KOF, and Mortal Kombat games is that typically only one ending was cannon and the rest weren't. Personally, I find this incredibly frustrating, since this method of story telling effectively makes any character development or plot points for that particular character meaningless. However, BlazBlue FIXES this problem by making time travel and multiple timelines as part of the main story. This is good thing, since it allows the writers to do practically anything to the characters, even KILL them and not have to worry about the consequences of killing a players favorite character, since everything can potentially be reset. What's cool is that even though everything resets at a particular point in time, characters STILL remember these events and are even effected by it, which gives these endings meaning. Examples of this include Ragna's bad ending in BBCS where his azure grimoire ( which is the source of his power in which he fights with) goes out of control from him relying on it to much, which results in Jubei ( the name of Ragna's master in sword fighting who taught him how to use that power after he found him when his orphanage home was attacked) and kills him, since he realizes that power going out of control could be the death of countless lives. Though this murder of master killing his ex pupil never happens in the main timeline. Another example of this is with Makoto ( who is a half human, half beast person who are types of people that are discriminated against in the BlazBlue world) who has a bad ending where she is literally mind raped by Relius ( who is a mad scientist who takes interest in her unique body and soul). These things are ALL canon even if it's not part of the main timeline, since characters still have fragmented memories of such events. Heck, just watch Makoto and Relius intro in BBCP and look how horrified she sounds when seeing him even though in main story line timeline he hasn't even touched her before. BlazBlue is a fighting game whose story mode doesn't disrespect the players time, since EVERY ending has a purpose and effects the characters in some way. The main story line and arcade mode combined in some of the later BlazBlue games, specifically "BlazBlue Central Fiction", takes LITERALLY dozens of hours for the player to complete as well.
In terms of my favorite BlazBlue game's in terms of story I'd say:
In regards to BBCT, I HATED how the story was structured, in the fact that there were a ridiculous set of conditions that had to be met to get all of the different endings, which mad the game a slog to go through. Comparatively, BBCS's story fixed that problem, and I'll always prefer the individual story routes each character had as it allowed the audience to truly get to know each of these characters on an individual level, as well as get plenty of time with their character growth, unlike BBCP and BBCF, where Mori decided to make a less branching narratives overall, but in doing so neglects to give a small percentage of the cast significant screen time ( examples include Tao, Azrael,). So BBCS wins for me in terms of the story. Personally, BBCP and BBCF was also where I really started to notice multiple examples of plot conviennce by the writer of the story. Examples include Celica coming back in BBCP through a device that as far as I'm aware WAS NOT foreshadowed in the earlier games at all. Another example is Terumi surviving being killed by Hakumen's time killer, which is an attack that strips a target of all their remaining time in the world and instantly kills them , by crudely Observing himself... , which is far as I'm aware isn't something a person should be able to do at that point in the story. Finally, there is how Ragna had his jacket in BBCP when he returned to the current timeline AFTER giving it to Celica the the age of the Black Beast running rampant, the problem is that he shouldn't have it do to him giving it to Celica, and Ragna was already given the jacket by Jubei in this time line, so Ragna SHOULDN'T have the jacket in this time line, and the argument that Noel observing him doesn't work, since it never mentions being able to duplicate objects. This creates a time paradox, Though it's been a while since I played the story so I could be wrong on this one. And BlazBlue's story is convoluted as heck.
Favorite BlazBlue Game in terms of Characters:
    1) Kokonoe
    2)Ragna
    3)Kagura
I'm a blunt, cynical, and can even be a revenge filled guy, so characters like Kokonoe and Ragna are people I resonated hard with since they both operate in ways that I would. Though Kokokone gets the edge up on Ragna in terms of being more pragmatic and logical, as I'm not the biggest fan of simple minded characters, and Ragna is a character that often times doesn't think ahead and will brute force a situation, when there could be better ways to handle it. In Regards to Kagura, He has charisma, as he was the ONLY character to unite the cast to fight the incoming threat that was Izanami, which is something that is extremely difficult to do, given these characters personalities. Additionally, all of his attacks look sick. Finally, He's a flirt, which may turn people off, but I always HATED in anime and gaming where there are extremely hot female characters and the male protagonist never says anything to them, making it a bit unrealistic, ESPECIALLY given the nature of these erotic outfits these female characters wear ( ex: Makoto, stripper outfit, Litchi's sexy nurse outfit, and whatever Mu 12 is wearing lol). And It's normal for guys to approach and even flirt with women that they find to be sexually attractive, since there's more than one way to get a conversation going, and each women reacts to each approach differently, as long as men don't sexually assault women during said convo it's all good. There's also the topic of sexual harrassment, but what a person finds verbably offensive is going to VARY from person to person. The only real problem with Kagura's sexual urges is the ones in regards to Makoto, as it can be argued to be said sexual assault. That said, he's an alpha male who many would follow, and stands out among anime and Japanese gaming that has MCs that are usually betas, so the fact that he got signifigant screen time and moved the plot along for me in the way that he did, was extremely satisfying for me.

      My guy, paragraphs.
Also you’re selling KOF’s story very short. One great thing about KOF is that it changes its pov characters periodically which keeps it fresh, and in focus with a new cast without becoming stale.
Also, KOF is generally considered more of a celebration series. The games with more fleshed out stories and lores are the Fatal Fury and AOF games which tie in to each other.
And using Mai to represent the cast is selling it very short since Mai is largely a minor joke character in the grand scheme of the story. It’d be like using bullet or Tao as representatives for Blazblue.

      @@azuresaiyan9005 "MY guy paragraphs"
I'm not seeing the problem here, since the point of CZcams's the comment section is to discuss, argue , or critique a product/service/person or event. How long someone post in regard to the subject of the video in the comments itself shouldn't be a factor IMO. Unless your problem is the length of the post in which case you DIDN'T have to read it.
"Also, KOF is generally considered more of a celebration series. "
Just because the purpose of a story isn't to have character depth or character development for most of it's cast DOESN'T mean I can't point it out. That's like me making a martial arts movie about two guys fighting each other, but I don't include any motivation on WHY the characters are fighting each other, or even delve deep on what their personalities are like. And to me, It doesn't matter how well choreographed the fights are, the movie I made has the right to be noted by a viewer watching my film, that it's lacking in the character depth department. Now whether that SHOULD be in the film or not is of course subjective, but again this is a comment section on a fighting game with TONS of character depth and development for MOST of the cast, which is unusual for a fighting game, but since BB STILL is a fighting game, I thought it was appropriate to make the KOF comparison.
"And using Mai to represent the cast is selling it very short since Mai is largely a minor joke character in the grand scheme of the story. It’d be like using bullet or Tao as representatives for Blazblue."
And you have the right to think that minor joke characters don't have to have character development or impact on the narrative, but I feel that they SHOULD. It's also funny you mentioned Tao because one of my main issues with BB's story by it's end was that she was one of the few characters that didn't get a conclusion to her arc. Why they didn't given the set up they gave her by the CS arc that should have concluded back in the CP arc is beyond me. Heck, Bang i is a joke character too, and that man has PLENTY of character depth and development as shown in BBCS and BBCP, as well as having an ESSENTIAL role to play in the plot by BBCPs end.. I could go more into detail if you want about the the guy if you like. That said, why they gave the him the character development treatment even though he's a joke character and not Tao as well is beyond me.

If I remember correctly, you don’t have to get every single true ending to get the True End. You just have to get 1 ending per character. Looking back at this I’m glad Continuum Shift streamlined this and made 100% not a pain as before.

Awesome video. I can't wait to see more in the future. I also love the fact you go through each characters's arcade modes and story mode routes, even if that seems very daunting. Honestly want to see how the Chrono Phantasma arcade modes are handled since they seem to be handled differently from the rest of the series from what I seen unlike with the other games's arcade modes where they seem to be just different timelines or outcomes (with the exception of Relius's CS Arcade mode but that is also a can of worms) but I could be mistaken.

    Great Video.
It brought me back to the time I discovered the Gems that are the BlazBlue Games.
I am happy to see that many people are having a mostly positive reaction towards Calamity Trigger despite it’s many flaws.
    Funny enough:
Continuum Shift was the Game I played before CT and I was surprised how many Changes there were compared to it’s predecessor.
I am one of the few people which actually have completed the Game and all the Arcade and Story Routes. I am no Fighting Game Pro or Specialist.
I am very casual when it comes to Gaming.
So completing it was a true Hellride.
But I love it regardless. And I remember the good times I had with my friends discovering the wonderful World of BlazBlue.
I recommend everyone who loves Fighting Games to give it a try. You won‘t be disappointed.

"BlazBlue Central Fiction" is a game that is arguably just as complex as "Guilty Gear XRD Revelator," with the game like Revelator having legacy skill, meaning if you haven't stuck with the game since the original back in 2008 you have a MASSIVE hill to climb in learning frame data for each character's normals, gatlings, and overall mobility options that can be used on offense and neutral. Then there are the game's plentiful system mechanics, such as having a half a dozen options on defense that you need to master such as having four ways to block based on specific scenarios for example, and the game having a multitude of wake up options with each having a specific use, and that's not even going into the Drive mechanic, which is a unique action for each character, which there are OVER 35 of, which MOST of the cast plays VASTLY DIFFERENT from each other.
Mainline BlazBlue games were HUGE in japan, with it being popular in many Japanese arcades, and as Majin Obama stated in a podcast with Blasted Salami that the series had at one point been up there even with the almighty Tekken in terms of popularity. With many veterans like Dogura ( who is one of the best players in Guilty Gear who uses Slayer) and Fenrich ( who is arguably the best BB player, and currently one the best in DBFZ) representing the series for a long time . Sadly, The series just never took off over here in the west. However, the lack of popularity nationwide doesn't equate to the game's quality. The fact that is arguably the most unique AND complex 2D fighter on the market, but isn't talked about hardly at all in the west was always baffling to me. Especially when I read comments, and watch videos of people in the FGC complaining about how boring fighting games have gotten recently, or how easy it has become and yet will REFUSE to give the game a try. Thankfully, that seems to be changing, for instance Lord Knight, a tournament player who plays a variety of different fighting games recently made a fighting game tier list and put "BlazBlue Central Fiction" near the top, as well as popular Guilty Gear content creators like Majin Obama saying on blasted salami's podcast that "BlazBlue Central Fiction" is HARDER than Guilty Gear Xrd. Heck, even Punk, arguably the best Street Fighter 5 player says BlazBlue is among his favorite fighting games series. For those who want to see high level game play in order to get a grasp of how hype this game can potentially be for you, I'd recommend a video titled "BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Grand Finals - Evo 2014" on youtube, and while the game represented there is not Central Fiction, I think it works, since Central Fiction is more of an evolution of Chrono Phantasma any way. Other channel's include "Burst Recap" and "Jourdal" for more high level Japanese play.
Personally, I thought BBCT had a pretty unique cast overall. Some of the extremes include the likes of Rache'ls wind mechanic, which can be used to control space in neutral and would be known to create 50/50 situations as common thing in later games, and knowing how to manage your character specific meter is key to mastering her. Next, is Hakumen, with his unique parry mechanic, and meter system. Then there's Litchi, who functions somewhat like a puppet character, with different properties and rules compared to Carl. Then there's Tagers Magnetism, etc. Heck , I'd argue that even less crazy characters like Jin, who has the ability to freeze the opponent in place, can be used smartly to set up resets mid combo. Heck, even more passive unique mechanics like Ragna's, with his health regen is pretty cool. Overall, I'd say the balance from extreme to passive unique characters is definitely toward the unique. With each new entry in the series DEFINITELY tilting more and more in the EXTREME direction with crazy characters with unique mechanics that could each function as their own game. (Examples include but is not limited to: Susanoo, Amane, Azrael, Kokonoe, etc.) Can't argue about the game's balance though. As it looks really bad. lol. And in terms of balance BB didn't really hit good favor with the community as whole arguably until BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend. Though BBCS vanilla was a MASSIVE improvement from BBCT though from what I gather.
Finally, BB TAG and mainline BlazBlue games are two SEPARATE things all together, with BBTAG having it's own set of rules with the system mechanics, and SIMPLIFYING ALL of the characters. It's for these reasons that you can't approach "BlazBlue Central Fiction" in the same way that you would BBTAG.

Calamity Trigger is still the best BlazBlue for me, and I've devoted a lot of my lifetime to the entire franchise, even the 3DS spin off games, Calamity Trigger will always be my favorite.

I finally completed Calamity trigger and I must say, what an experience, I went in knowing nothing about blazblu and just left with hunger for more, I really liled playing as every character (specially hakumen, he was so fun), and the story mode really confuses me but it also intrigues me, now I need to get continuum shift in my vita, oh and the reason I started playing was because I wanted to see this video but I didn't want to get spoiled so thanks for pushing me into this weird but cool rabbithole

Carl... is the unluckiest saddest character.
Everything he does is either making him go insane, more sad or further from his goals.
Oh and everyone thinks hes insane too.
(Rachel doesnt help either by dismissing him.)
And even in the end his last last scene is him just being so insane that im PRETTY SURE he will be the villan.
The ONLY people who are nice to him are:
    1. Bang: Who is so annoyingly positive it sort of for a moment makes Carl happy.
Untill Carl sees his father and/or anyone else with a Nox weapon.
Tao Kaka: Who just... is there? She is just happy all the time no matter what which makes him kinda happy?
    3. Lytchi: Who treats Carl's wounds and geneeally acts like a big sister which Carl hates.
Soooooo. 2 are idiots who dont even understands him at all
and 1 is too motherly to actually stop him + is occupied with her own stuff.

Apparently Bang in CT isn't like awful but just terribly mediocre because he has short range, low damage from combos, can't block in Fu-Rin-Ka-Zan and needs nails (limited resource) which means you'd generally be better off picking literally other character minus the unplayable ones. Or you could buy any other Blazblue game and look at the cutscenes online because forcing yourself to play Calamity Trigger is seemingly like waterboarding yourself.

Okay, you've said a bunch of stuff. I don't necessarily agree with, but the one I actually have a problem with is why people use 3D models as sprits nowadays. It kinda is a money thing, but it's more an upfront cost vs. long-term.
So 1st you have to think how many people can do the art. You can't just go to school to learn how to do sprite art. But even my community college has a course on how to make 3D models. So, do you have one/ a handful of people or a team?
2nd, once a 3D model is done, it's basically a puppet. As for a sprite you have to animate every action they do. So long term, you want to add story, or have different interactions with additional characters. It's way easier to use 3D models.
