  • Windsor Castle, the scene of a disastrous fire in 1992, was badly in need of restoration. One problem: The bill was likely to be in the millions--and taxpayers were in no mood to foot the bill.

    The decision to raise the funds by opening up Buckingham Palace to visitors was genius! - The general public still payed for the repairs, but only those who wanted to, and they got something in return. Having said that, on reflection I think many people let their opinions on the Royal Family as people cloud their judgement in regards to Windsor Castle - It was completely unthinkable to let a piece of our heritage like that go to ruin, no matter the cost.

    • @FJF1085
      @FJF1085 Před 6 lety +1

      The cost to insure a building like that with everything in it is astronomical. Both in terms of the cost of the insurance premiums and the amount of coverage that would be needed. I'm sure some individual items might be insured but the building as a whole and most of the contents aren't insurable. I mean just think of the value of everything in that building, of the building itself.

    I was in London at that time and paid to go on the tour. Afterwards this woman who was a dead ringer for Julia Childs stopped me outside the gate; she had a huge camera and was selling portraits in front of the Castle. I said ok and after gave her my address so she could send this amazing keepsake to me. Its been 25 years, should I stop expecting it in the mail any day now?

    Lots of confusion in the comments. People were not opposed to repairing the castle. They were opposed to having to pay for it. After all, the royals don't pay taxes, so the cost would be entirely on the public?? On the poor workers and so? Just for a castle (be it a great historic one) that they can't even enter? That ultimately don't have any effect on their lives? Sure they'd like for it to be restored, but being forced to pay for it without any say in the matter? That would have been absurd and the way they handled it was much better.

    • @tivisukka
      @tivisukka Před rokem +1

      Let's take a different approach here. Imagine a family that is absolutely loaded, because they take small amounts of money from each person that lives in that country. The population don't have any say in that, and some of them are quite annoyed about having to pay for one family's lifestyle, while they live in poverty. The rich family has a luxury house and one day it largely burns down. It's certainly not the population's fault, but there is talk that the small amount of money that the rich family takes from the people to support their lavish lifestyle will increase. Just so that the rich family can rebuild their mansion AND continue their lavish lifestyle. Of course the puplic - especially the already quite poor workers - are strongly opposed to this. "Sure the mansion was pretty and it's a shame it burned down, but why do WE have to pay for it? They are rich! We are not!"

    • @tivisukka

      The queen avoided an uprising, a revolution even, with the desicion to not tax the public more. Opening Buckingham palace for paying visitors was genious. Only the ones who can afford and want to pay, will pay, and they get something in return! Absolutely the greatest plan to restore the castle.
