- Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years. There was a royal residence in Windsor all the way back since Saxon Monarchs were in power. But the specific site we know of today was first Established by William the Conqueror.
Now this was a time when Castles were constructed for military purposes.
The site was chosen for its place above the river Thames, and on the edge of a hunting ground. It was constructed to guard the western approach to London. William built a defensive castle, called a motte and bailey castle, basically a mound and a stockade around it. Building began around 1070 and ended in 1086.
With its proximity to the capital and royal hunting grounds, it became a perfect location for a royal residence.
Windsor castle has stood and survived for almost 1,000 years.
Since 1070, it has seen history. and has gone through numerous rebuilds, renovations, and restorations.
40 monarchs, including Her Majesty The Queen, have called the Castle home.

Great job on a very interesting topic. It is even more relevant after the queen's passing, as many of us outside the UK will have so many questions about places such as Windsor now.

@@ChitChatHistory Hi. Could you please tell me where in the UK you are from? I am asking because I am curious about your accent. And yes ... you did a fantastic job.
Great video! :)
Glad you enjoyed it
Great presentation. Informative.
thanks for this video. so informative. i appreciate it 👍
Congrats on a good video. There is a small error at 6:45. The duke & duchess of Windsor are not buried in the “royal tombs of the castle” located in the burial vaults of St. George’s Chapel, but are instead buried approximately a mile outside the castle walls in the private burial grounds at Frogmore, Windsor Home Park, not far from Queen Victoria’s mausoleum.
Btw you listed 6 of the 10 kings buried in the royal burial vaults at St George’s chapel in Windsor Castle, but omitted George III, George IV, William IV, and George VI
Ah good catch! Thanks for letting me know :)
Very nice video. Cheers.
Many thanks!
💯💯
It was also strategically positioned for access to Heathrow.
I wonder if anyone has ever been in every room of the Castle? I would get lost😊
Queen Victoria also built the horse indoor riding area. Cost approximately $100.000.00 to construct but still in use today. If i am mistaken, please let it be known.

The most money spent on that castle was during British Raj in India from money stolen from India.
had trouble with audio or your pronunciation... but thanks anyway.
Rajputs👑👑 princely..... haritage 😮😮
Video would have been much better if it didn't cross back to you all the time reading your script. You call it a palace then amount later a castle which one is it?
Oh. How can you say that. She's soooo cute.
You "since these updates little has been done to the castle", so the fire didn't do much damage 1992 only burned about 20% of it, I think quite a lothas been done seeming it took 5 years.
too many unfounded hyperbole: the oldest the mostest, the bestest, the blah blah, bllahest
