How To Custom Paint Brake Calipers Properly: AUDI R8

- As you know, I'm a HUGE fan of DIY projects. If you have the proper tools, equipment, and knowledge...then go at it! However, I'm always a bit more cautious when working on brakes for very very obvious reasons. So to keep my confidence and comfort in good standing while on the track, I went to the professionals at ProformanceIndustries.com to paint my black calipers a custom pearl red. Proformance has proprietary high temp paint that can withstand the torture of track driving and looks factory applied. Here is their step by step process for creating custom color calipers on an Audi R8. Hope you enjoy!

Yep I have seen a finger flying across a tool room when using lather gloves on Bridgeport milling machine.
You never wear gloves near a lathe.

This is an OSHA violation.
Hands too close to the jaws of that enormous chuck. Since he just used sandpaper, no tooling, he could have done the same job faster and safer in a drill press. That polished aluminum will probably oxidize pretty quickly since you sanded off the anodizing.

Great tip to cut around a socket to create masking circles, I'm doing my calipers now and this really helped me out!

That's the life of a proffesional, most of them I've met had several fingers with severe damage due to actually going too far but in the end it's not as dangerous as it looks.
I had ptsd style flashbacks when I watched that bro
But Mario wasn't the one working on the shift know so why would they be cleaning up bits of him?
That shop owner is one injury away from bankruptcy, this video shows more OSHA violations than the training videos.
Not to mention spraying what I assume are 2K paints without using a fresh air fed respirator !

Wow, beats my caliper paint job! Still took hours of prep and painting, only to try and not get everything covered in brake fluid. these guys did an amazing job.
The attention to detail and professionalism of both the companies on this video is amazing. You can see why a perfectionist like Larry would use them. Only thig I would of done different is the wheels in gloss black to constrast against the nardo grey wrap and red calipers but each to their own.
Such an awesome job. Truly the way to “professionally” paint calipers. The other end of the spectrum from “I’ll leave my calipers on and tape off a bunch of stuff…give it two coats…”
I gotta' say, I love your choice of Ruby Pearl for the brake calipers. My car's color is the same with a bit more metallic, and now I want the brakes to match!

To mask pistons I cut vinyl on a plotter to the correct radius and stick that on. Faster and accurate.
The center cap is a nice touch!

When I was young and cared about this kind of stuff, I just washed mine in my filthy parts washer, primed them and bombed them with a can of brake paint from the local parts store. Cost me maybe $30 including the brake fluid, and half a days work all up. They looked great & lasted 9 years of abuse with no problems.

Just curious why you were concerned about the "ammo" lettering being in white when it would be protected behind a clear coat? I think white would look much better.
White will get yellow with high heat

A DIY video of how to do this on more "normal" brakes would be great to see. (normal brakes being more pitted and less refined)

Hi Larry! Love your videos, but why didnt you bleed the whole brakesystem and change the brakefluid to dot5.1? The dot4 fluid is probably good enough, but some Motul 5.1 would set the standard even higher! Keep up the good work! 😊

Like I said in other vid, THIS PLACE IS AMAZING, & DETAIL IS Number 1....... Probably pricey, BUT WELL WORTH THE MONEY! Well worth....... As most places probably wouldn't take time to do half, or even a quarter, of the the stuff these guys do.

Thoughts on paint vs powder coat for calipers? Local powder coat shop here is surprising cheap if you do all the prep yourself. I know there's some debate about piston seals and heat when baking the powder.
Powder coating will require new rubber seals due to the baking, so a little more invested in that. The fluid will need to be 100% removed, too.
Amateur machinist here, I had to pause to finish laughing at the overkill of that lathe on your shifter. That thing is MASSIVE.
Any idea how much this would just cost to have done professionally? I can do this myself in my driveway, but by the time I get back Upstate it's going to be freezing cold.

Any reason why you decided against splitting the caliper to paint them?
Yeah a proper job would have been to completely disassemble them, strip the old finish then powder coat them. And finally install all new seals
Stephane Leclair Most manufactures don’t powder coat due to the caliper retaining heat. (Or so I have heard)
Brembo and Akebono calipers are powder coated from factory (the one that are "painted")
