Short review: Overall great audio quality and very convenient have it power and audio sent through the hotshoe jack. The windscreen is not enough in windy conditions and you can't manually control your audio. If you want something that sounds decent and is very simple and easy to use or something for scratch audio pick this thing up! geni.us/notGVtT

Thanks for the great review Max! I think Im gonna save my money because I have the Sony A6300. The Sony A7r III actually works with the crop-lenses in the S35 mode. I tried out the kit lens of Sony A6300. It would be great to have a fullframe camera to get the most out of my canon and vintage lenses. I hope they announce some new cameras at CES.

Thank you for covering overheating issue, and I think it is not just for me a deal breaker, spending 5k on camera that may not work when you need it, is not an option.

Thank you for the review! I'm curious, for strictly video purposes, if price was not a factor, would the newly released a7iii perform better than this camera? Out of all the tests I've seen so far, it seems like the a7riii is slightly sharper in 1080p. Any input is appreciated.

I watched many channels/videos for getting substantial information if the Sony A7R III would be the right choice for me. Your video sold the A7R III to me although videos are less important for me than stills. Thank you! I just ordered one :-)
A7R II - This camera I really like for the photo. But you can still make films on it (as in the movements in the film, well, at the level of Blackmagica, you can achieve the same picture)? What lenses to consider? and yet about the lenses of the Xeen Cine lines that you know? ... Thank you!

Beautiful place great review : So every time I saw you you had a long sleeve shirt on, so just what was the Fahrenheit temperature during your overheating test, would it be OK in 95° weather direct sun for long video recordings?

The colors right out of the camera are really nice!

You can also use natural for more natural colors.And I have a A7R Mk1, the photos are splendid but the video quality and codecs are totally bad and the A7R without IBIS is just a bit less shaky than the A7R2 and A7R3 which still have a bad shaky inbox stabilisation.
Excellent review, as usual Max! I'm thinking I am seeing heavy amounts of in-camera noise reduction kicking in the mid-range ISO amounts. We can see heavy amounts of texture smoothing and certainly those "comb pattern" artifacts breaking on the edges. (even soft edges show this) I would rather that Sony turned down the NR and left more noise in as it's often more accurate to carefully remove noise in post. Again,...GR8 review.
Max, What did you think of the Sony ECMGZ1M compared to the Rode VideoMicro? Fantastic job on the video by the way.
Max, great video as always! Question for you, if I am planning on doing a lot of short filmmaking and such, where there is going to be some work at night, am I better going with the A7RIII or the A7SII? I have a A6300 right now which I am going to keep as well, but want to add a second body to the kit that can also be used to monitor audio.

Amazing video! Just one question: was the footage towards the end starting at minute 28:30 shot with the Sony A7R3? Or with another camera? Just want to clear that up
Nice review and I like quality of that Sony is offering. When shooting with S-Log3 what post processing profile/LUT have you used?
Your video was great on comparing 4K full-frame/output to shooting 4K
oversampled 5K in APS-C mode. But I was interested in seeing those both output to 1080p, and then compared to shooting in 1080p.
You also showed some S-LOG3 grading, but not of the same image side-by-side, compared to CINE and PP-Off, like you did some of the other tests.
And... Do you shoot 4:2:2 video HDMI out to an external recorder, or do you shoot 4:2:0 in-camera? Can you tell the difference if everything else were held constant?
Do you shoot 4K video in 60M or 100M mode? When does that make a difference, low light? Or maybe it's hard to tell.
4K in 24p vs. 30p? Sure, 24p is the old film standard, and 30p is television, but how much difference do those make on modern computer and phone
screens?
I've never seen a CZcams video showing these differences (only color grading, and even then, the videos tend to compare various graded modes
but don't show you PP-Off). I think they'd all probably be universal questions for every new a7R3, a73 & a9 video shooter!

For those who say that this camera doesn't have 4k60p or 10bit or gh5 is better..it's not rated as a video camera.it is a photography camera which can shoot amazing video.of course gh5 is better in video.but how are the gh5 photos? my opinion is that this camera is an amazing all-around camera.you have both great photography and video features in a small package .great review Max
Teo Sticea precisely. I would love this. I do both so while I would love for this to match the GH5 with 4k60 and 10bit this would be perfect for my photog4aphy too. Only problem is I'm too poor to afford an upgrade rn. I use a G7 and have 3 lenses which comes to a total value of like 2/3 of the body.

Hey Max! I loved the in-depth review! I currently have the a7rii and the a6300. The a7rii for photo mainly, and a6300 for video (I'm a HUGE fan of 120 fps).
I am thinking of selling both to upgrade to the a7riii. I am not sure the pros and cons (if there are any) in terms of quality and functionality, I was hoping you could give me some insight! I would love to have one camera thats capable (or better) than what both of these cameras do!

Max (or anyone) can you get facial recognition to work in 4k video with the A7r3? It shows as greyed out in the menu and no green box appears. Seems odd as there is nothing in the extended manual saying it wont work and it works in 4k on my A7rii.
Hi Max, Is it possible that the Panasonic and Fuji our perform the Sony on the ibis due to the different in sensor sizes, so the shake effect has more impact on full size sensor!!!

Hey man...Pretty loyal viewer here and I appreciate your efforts (You do an awesome job). Question: I have a GH5 with 12-35 & 35-100. While this camera is amazing for decent light video, I find that it just doesn't cut it for photos (for me). My question is.. since I live the poor life and am blessed to have what I have camera-wise, does this RIII come close to what the GH5 does for video? I am thinking it probably does but not quite? It's just really difficult for me to 'upgrade' financially.. and I need one camera that can do everything very well. My struggle is going to be getting the additional funds to buy like that 24-105 to go with it. I will probably have to settle for the 18-105 crop lens and use that for a while until I can get the rest of the money I need for the 24-105. I just can't deal with the M43 sensor for shooting into the sun for sunsets as well as portrait photos. Am I on the right track? Lol ;) (Is it worth the struggle to get this camera and will it pay off.. is the question). :) Keep up the good work, Max!!

Did you use any kind of gimbal while filming or post image stabilization while editing? For example: all those shots from 15:20 to 16:00 or so? They seemed super smooth for handheld. Also during that same segment I noticed a dust spot on the sensor when filming the blue sky. Was this a continuous issue? Thanks!
Yes definitely a gimbal. This kind of footage is impossible to get if your shooting handheld, even if you have a m43 which has the best IBIS. That’s dust on the sensor. It was very dusty there in the desert and I was swapping lenses often. Unfortunately it’s hard to see when your shooting until you get back to edit.
How did you make 4k slow motion? use twixtor? or optical flow? or up scale from fhd?

Hi Max, nice video full of exciting info especially high ISO performance. Curious to know which ISO / what is going on at 29'30" with all the ugly noise, was it shot with the GH5 ? It doesn't look like the A7R3...
Guillaume Polere This was filming outside when there was literally no light other than those very dim solar lights by the shrubs which look bright in the shot and are blowing out the area next them it but in reality I could barely see where I was going. Probably was no moon as well since I remember not being able to see lol. It was at the max iso which is 32,000 or somewhere around there.
So what do you think the A7 siii will bring?
If you could buy any video camera for under 10k what would you recommend?

is the screen still darker when you recording 4k?
Love the review and channel! bit confused though, you said no crop in 4k, but there is a crop 4k made that downsamples 5k or 6k right?
Most cameras, when shooting 4k in FF mode crops the image (1.3x crop for 1DXMk2, 1.7x crop for 5Dmk4 etc). The A7RIII does not have a crop in FF mode.
S35 mode is by definition a 1.5x crop of FF. The A7RIII downsamples 5k into 4k in S35 mode to get a sharper image.
Great video again, you tested several things others didn't want todo and open a can of worms like the heat test and battery test. I do wonder how sony did it. The internal's clearly show a better heatsink design but since battery life on 4k seems to be also way longer than it should i wonder if there is no new hardware inside to help encoding reducing power needs so heat and battery. I know its all about money but i kinda disagree with your end conclusion its always valid to upgrade since they turned it into a usable video camera now (the best hybrid for sure) combined with say a smallHD focus (when needed, for flip/side) its very powerful. I understand cost is always a issue and if you can't afford it well you can't but the differences between them do add up to the 500 euro or 800 dollar gap even for the video aspects.
Hello I have question what is better gh5 o a7III?
I'm upgrading from the A7II, is it worth over the A7R2? I don't make a lot of money with videos, I'll have to use the 7II 3 more months to be able to buy the R3 with photography money, having already the budget for an R2.
