  • As a landscape and outdoor photographer I have a group of settings I usually change right away as soon as I get a camera. Here's a quick rundown of the top changes I make.

    Good video but just wanted to mention a couple of things.
    First, from the research I have done and tests people have performed, after ISO 400 there is really no benefit of using uncompressed vs compressed.
    More importantly, I suggest that when recommending to shoot in Adobe RGB to remind viewers that if they are sharing the images on the internet they really want to export the images to sRGB because first of all, if your monitor is does not cover the AdobeRGB color space then the images may look a bit dull, plus unfortunately not all apps out there and browsers are good with color management so if you want to play it safe with compatibility then you want to go with sRGB.
    So if your goal is to shoot JPG with Adobe RGB but still plan to edit the photos and just wanted to capture more data, then sure that works as long as you export it to sRGB before sharing on the internet.
    I personally work with RAW in ProPhoto color space all the way to the last part of editing when I finally export it to which ever format I need depending if I am printing or posting on the internet etc.
    So in summary sure, a "bigger" color space sounds like a logical choice but is not. It depends on your ultimate goal and process to get to that final photo you will be sharing.
    Regards!

    Thank you for sharing these excellent suggestions! As more A7Riii bodies are entering the used camera market, this video continues to provide value to the Sony community. And many of these items apply to other camera brands as well.

    Some other great changes to make (for me personally but it might work for others too). I’ve set ‘C2’ to APS-C (super 35mm) - super handy for anyone shooting primes. I also back button focus so I’ve set ‘AF-ON’ as focus and ‘AEL’ as eye af.

    *#10 Volume* You got this wrong, I'm afraid! The setting you changed alters the volume in playback mode. If you want to switch off the timer and AF beeps, then it's in Camera 2, page 9, under *Audio signals*. You're welcome! ;)

    One more thing. There is a setting for shutter release that dictates how hard the camera should try to find focus prior to releasing the shutter. I find that anything other than the most strict setting - at least in the a7R2 - resulted in frequent missed focus. Default is the middle “balanced” setting but I change it to require focus.

    So what is it with you guys that you call the TOOLBOX icon a suitcase? Mark Galer ( Sony Global Ambassador) for Australia did the same thing in his setup video. In context, you are in the settings or setup menu system so having a suitcase icon wouldn't make much sense, but a Toolbox kinda seems the right thing. Minor point I know, but found the interpretation by more than one expert was interesting.

    Hi Matt, could you highlight a question for me on uncompressed raw please. I understand that when using the uncompressed raw setting there can be restrictions and grey out sections of the menu? what would these be? I think I saw a video regarding how it interferes with bracketing and frame rate? This could be a reason not to go with the R3 and with the 850 (I'm a landscaper too). Please can you identify the inconsistencies many thank for your time. John :)

    Hi Matt,
    Thanks for the video, great as usual !!
    Regarding the quality of the raw you choose uncompressed vs lossless compressed because you don't to think about it (no brainer) or you actually did see differences in quality ?
    How about 12 or 14 bits ? The math is in the favor of 14 bits but I read so many times that there is no way to see any differences.
    What is your advice ?
    Thanks

    • @MattKloskowski
      @MattKloskowski  Před 6 lety

      Honestly, I've never really researched it. I just shoot at whatever the default "raw" setting is and change to uncompressed on the Sony. As you know... there's always a trade off between "the math" and the "rules" and real world. I'd say the only way to really find out is to test it in your normal shooting environment and compare the two on screen to see if you can tell the difference. Thanks!

  • @andrewhillphotosvideos2909

    very good thanks but when it comes to the volume settings I would leave the up, why? because in video editing if you don't need audio then just delet it. if you do then you can set the audio level to what you want... in other words keep it on... maybe thats me but you have that control in edit... thanks tho great video well worth watching to the end..

    • @MattKloskowski
      @MattKloskowski  Před rokem

      This video is really old, and I didn't re-watch it - but I believe the volume I was referring to was the volume settings of the beeps of the camera. If not, the only other reason I wouldn't leave volume set high for actual recording is that's like saying "Don't worry about your highlights... just fix them in post". If the highlights are gone, they're gone - there is no fixing in post. If your volume is peaked and blown out, it's gone - you can help it in post but it will never sound as good as correct volume levels.

    • @MattKloskowski
      @MattKloskowski  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Mark. The a7R iii is the same camera today as it was when it came out. Cameras really don't change much after they're released. Always check for the latest firmware updates. And when you do, if there is a firmware update, it'll list if there are any new things that were added. But it's not like Photoshop where if you're using a version from 4 yeas ago, the version today is very different. The camera that came out 4 years ago is generally the same camera today give or take a few minor changes in firmware updates. Good luck!

    Was thinking of switching to this from DSLR but having handled and experienced the ergonomics of the camera I'm staying put. Yes the body is smaller etc but the lenses are generally just as thick and heavy as DSLR equivalents which negates the advantage.
    What did it for me though, (aware this has been debated many times:), was a recent report where an A7Rlll was subjected to an inclement weather test alongside Nikon & Canon equivalent cameras:
    www.diyphotography.net/weather-sealing-test-kills-sony-a7riii-not-nikon-canon-olympus/
    The results werent great and the A7 stop working completely after one phase of the test.
    It would appear that Sony mistakenly believe that the way the A7's are made removes the need for pro level weather sealant capabilities when it's clearly not the case.
