      Tony & Chelsea Northrup It seems like Sony rushed to launch a7riii because Nikon d850 has taken all the attention. Sony a7riii is surely a great camera but at least sony should have used new sensor. For now Nikon d850 is still the best FF camera on market at least for image quality.

      Ordered mine the minute it went on pre-sale. Would you find that using this plus a GH5 to capture 4K 60fps would work well in tandem on most video projects? The stills portion of the A7R III is a huge draw for me, since I love it so much on my A7R II. Will overheating in 4K be an issue this time around?

    Dear Tony and Chelsea,
    I know you probably won't see this but I just wanted to thank you for all the time and effort you put into making these educational videos. I've been following this channel for around 5 years now and your thorough testing of new cameras and lenses has greatly helped me when making purchasing decisions and I feel like I've become a better overall photographer thanks to your informative videos and helpful tips. I've recently decided to upgrade to full frame and consider breaking into the professional market and although the a7riii is an older camera now I felt like it was the best bang for my buck and fit my budget. It's almost like a swiss army knife in the sense that it can do a little bit of everything and that's exactly what I want/need. I just ordered a used one off adorama and I can't wait till it arrives in the mail so I can start using it! Thanks again and much love from Pennsylvania

    Tony + Chelsea, love your work here on CZcams, super helpful stuff. Wondering how you think this camera will stack up against the A7s2 in terms of low light video or the 4k video in general. I didn't like the a7r2 video - was bad in low light in my brief comparisons.

    We preordered (2) rIII bodies to replace our rII bodies. We have been very satisfied with the a7rII shots beyond anything we experienced with Canon. We shot Canon since 1984, the last film camera was the F1, and then we switched over to the 10D (6mp and very noise, but it was our film to digital transition body.) Followed by a line up of the 5D & 1D cameras. Our last canon/DLSR was the 1Dx. It was a great camera, but the file size and DR of the A7rII kept the 1dx on the shelf. Now we have sold off all of our Canon gear except the T/S lenses. We have the A9 to replace the 1Dx for FR and AF of sports and wildlife, but I still prefer the larger file of the a7rII so even with wildlife and sports, I push the a7rII using subject knowledge to overcome slower AF and FR. The a7rIII was made for us. The only camera we use for our client work is the a7rII, so they are long paid for and we will still be able to get some $$$ for them on CL. I think we will sell of the a9 as well. It is a great camera, but it falls short at 24mp. I would like to see dual high speed card slots and a flip screen. P.S. we assigned eyeAF to the lens button, that along with back button focus is a very flexible setup to achieve focus and composition in any situation. All that being said, our client business is 90% on a big tripod and manual focus Canon T/S 17&24.

    I am wondering if the speed of shooting is improved. By that I mean that it doesn’t freeze up after taking each photo like the A7Rii. I don’t shoot a lot of bursts, but even a single shot on the mark ii makes you wait about 10 seconds to review if you don’t have auto-review turned on.

  • @sethcashman1011
    @sethcashman1011 Před 6 lety +1

    Excellent review, as always. (Disappointed about the IQ findings vs. the D850, but the eye focus looks amazing.) I'm still unclear as to the limitations of silent mode. Is it 12-bit/compressed only? And did you experience rolling shutter?

  • @nyambe
    @nyambe Před 6 lety +4

    Dust on sensor? drop down to below f4 it would hardly be visible. Shoot at 50 fps or higher to lessen the 180 shutter impact if you need to.

    I have a frustration on the SLOOOW Write speeds on the 7Rii. Taking five shots in RAW usually makes the previews unusable as it writes.
    Is there a difference using the UHS-II cards on the Riii? Is it better only using one fast card? not using two to record at the same time... its one of the reasons I am thinking of changing over to the D850, even thought I love Eye-Autofocus.
    Thanks!

    Why get excited about a fast frame rate that has to be written to an SD card waiting to catch up and then later imported...Where is the XQD slot??? Sony helped develop them and they are found on Nikon D850, D5 and D500 cameras, but not in the newest flagship Sony cameras. Even my year old D500 has an XQD slot that not only writes quickly, but imports into Lightroom much faster than an SD card. When you have hundreds of images it makes a huge difference.

I was thinking about jumping the fence over to the Sony side with the release of the a7riii. I don’t shoot that much sports any more but do require a low light camera for my weddings. (Sony is attractive due to weight, noise or lack there of and file size).

    I wanted to switch to Sony mirrorless, but it's simply a more expensive option. With Sigma and other third party manufacturers coming up with excellent affordable options means a DSLR is still today the best solution for enthusiasts and pros that seek the best value for money. So even if Sony has some features that Nikon &Canon don't have and with image quality being comparable, the access to affordable lenses is a big issue, because photography is more about lenses than about camera bodies.

      Thankfully 2 years on we have Tamron providing the budget trio giving us 17-180mm at 2.8, sigma giving 14-70 in two 2.8 lenses, as well as 100-400, plus numerous 1.4 sigma art lenses ranging through 14, 24, 35, 50, 85, 105 and 135, as well as offerings from Samsung, Viltrox etc. If only Sony glass was available there’s no way I’d be getting an a7RIII today, but it’s thankfully a much more competitive space these days.

Many years ago I went into Fixation (one of the best service centres in the UK) and the technician told me they would use a raincover on any and all cameras whatever the manufacturer claimed about the seals. So I've been cautious with all my cameras not to have them exposed to more than a spray.

I'm really thinking about upgrading, because I do a lot of slow-motion with the A7R2 in 720p which is a low resulution when you do everything else in 4k! The A7R3 can do 120fps in 1080 I think, it has a better stabilizer (we use the camera in moving cars mostly with rough suspension), the battery lasts longer and you have 2 SD-card slots. Oh and don't underestimate that 3.1USB! Time is money and I hate it to wait 15-20min to copy all files! ;)

A7Riii has had it's sensor tweaked to improve image quality according to Sony but I think it's probably on the video side with the new HDR standard. Not surprised the stills are the same/similar. Ok, seriously, speaking as a Canon user, and optimist sometimes to the point of delusion, they have now officially been left in the dust by Sony and Nikon. Sony only has the downsides of mirrorless which are unavoidable and arguably made up for by the benefits. Meanwhile the D850 is better in every way than any Canon except the 1DX II, which is an entirely different beast for a different purpose. Live view is the only pro point for Canon. If the next camera they release isn't competitive in some way, that has to be the final nail in the coffin.

    I'm a sony A7rii shooter and prefer Sony over Canon/Nikon, but I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed with the A7Riii. It's too little an improvement for a camera releasing after 2/3 years of it's predecessor. No improvement in DR(as pointed by Tony). Same resolution, almost same video capabilities, same body, limited touch screen capability. I was hoping for a dramatic improvement in the Dynamic range, far better video capabilities, an increase in the resolution. Yes, The increased battery life and better FPS and improvement in the autofocus a good sign, but not enough for a 2-3 year's wait.
    P. S. Before anyone of you comment that I should buy an A7sii or a video camera if I want better video features like 10bit 422, please note that it's not easy to travel solo, across the valleys and thought the cities with an extra gear along with 3 prime and 2 zoom lenses. Its not wrong to expect a machine which can do video and photo both.

Also the sensor you claim they are protecting is a medium format sensor for a camera type that very few people even buy.

      As much as I would want this as well I doubt it will happen.. front facing articulating screens are mostly wanted and used by vloggers or highly video centric users. It looks as if Sony is targeting the pro photography market with the R line to compete with the Canon 5d and Nikon D850s (none of which have articulating screens as well).. Sony is already getting rid of in-camera novelty apps like play memories/panorama because these are features they believe aren’t as useful to say a wedding photographer or sports photographer, I mean I doubt these photographers are too keen on selfies and if self monitoring was the need they could go the route of a SmallHD and other much more capable mini monitors.. Maaaybe much more fitting for a Sony a7siii if anything given all the vloggers using it now and maybe to compete with the gh5.

Image quality hasn't been a concern for me with the Rii, but action and focus cost me a lot of time since I find myself dropping to jpg a lot, and as a consequence, I have a ton more shots to cull. Hoping I can stay in raw and get reasonable bursts and a higher likelihood of a keeper in once burst vice 5. Would be nice to only carry one spare battery instead of 4 or 5. The focus will be a big winner too. I never thought about in-camera rating before, but that is an interesting idea.

  • @DSP1337
    @DSP1337 Před 6 lety +4

    I am really hesitant to like the A7R3 and the A9 because of three reasons:
    1) Handling: My D750 feels awesome in my hands. Yes, it doesnt have touchscreen or a decent joystick, but when shooting a wedding for 10-14h, the deep grip means everything! Even my D600 gets pretty uncomfortable because of the shallower grip. I dont think any Sony mirrorless would be suited for me on a long shoot.
    2) Low ISO dynamic range: The A9 lacks DR at base ISO compared to the D750 when pushed and now the A7R3 also lacks DR at base ISO compared to the D850. I often don't have a choice to work with strobes or studio conditions, so every bit of DR counts. Because even when exposed correctly, harsh sunlight is a difficult task for every camera!
    3) Slower 2nd card slot: I know, as a wedding photographer, no one thinks, you could ever run out of buffer. And I rarely do. But there are always some rare moments were you capture action and having a slower card that hinders your fast redundant shooting can be a huge pain then.

    • @norseatheart1086
      @norseatheart1086 Před 6 lety

      DSP 2) the difference is very, very slim between the D850 and the A7R3. I have a hard time believing it would make a bug difference in the real world.
      3) The buffer on the D850 is only 21 frames writing to both card slots. So the A7R3 isnt inferior in that regard.

      I have a Nikon D750 and a Sony A9. While you are right about the grip of Nikon, you can still comfortably shoot Sony whole day ( I shot for three days in a row ) . Once you own it , you will either buy the battery grip or hold the lens instead of the camera body. The body is so light that yo will prefer to hold it by the lens. I worry about the grip only when I'm not shooting. When we are on the job, one hand will hold the lens if you are using a heavy G master and the other will hold the body

Looking at the situation without bias, it's pretty clear that for someone not invested in either system, buying a D850 or A7R III comes down to personal preference. Mirrorless cameras have been closing the gap consistently and are now very close to even the top DSLRs. The remaining problems like infrastructure and lens selection are a matter of time. Yes, buying a D850 today is still a good idea - for now. But at some point within the next 2-5 years we'll look at DSLRs vs mirrorless like we were comparing old nokia mobiles and smartphones. There's simply no reason to assume the old flippy mirror technology will hold up long term against the much more flexible mirrorless sytem.

      Landscope 360: I totally agree with what your're saying. In a few years it's all going to be mirrorless, absolutely. I just bought the D850 to add to my D500 and D3s. I also have all the long glass associated with wildlife and sports photography( that's what I do). That said, I also believe that the D850 will be my last DSLR. All others should be mirrorless. I suspect Nikon will be moving to that in 2018. As far Pro/non Pro discussion. I would submit that if you do street, portrait or landscape, you're well served with a mirrorless camera. For sports and wildlife, a DSLR ( with the associated glass) is the best option at the moment. That's what should guide your purchase decisions. This weekend, all of us shooting wildlife will have either Nikon's or Canon's DSLRs. None of us will be pro's. It's simply because of the glass and the performance in these conditions. IMHO. Is the Sony A7RIii a good example of mirrorless catching up to DSLRs? Absolutely!

      Nikonuser today would you say for night and astrophotography the mirrorless would be better or worst than something like the D850? Seems manual focus is ideal for stars.
      I agree it’s just a matter of time before Nikon and cannon start making mirrorless pro bodies. I think Nikon and canon have it down on ergonomics and weather sealing. They have done it for so long. I think Nikon should upgrade to as large or larger mount vs Sony and canon to maximize future lens options. Canon did it in past and it paid off, perhaps start fresh on a new mirrorless. A lot easier to design lenses from an engineering standpoint I would imagine not having to worry about old film technology mounting limitations. Nikon is def king of wringing out the maximum from a mount designed in the 50s. That is pretty amazing. Time to remove the restrictor plate.

    Im thinking to get this camera instead of the Canon 5Dmk3 with adapter and Canon L glass is this a viable combination since Im sick of canons outright shitty cameras and I dont want to switch my whole lenspark.

    Hi T & C,
    I downloaded the raw files, and played around with them,
    I noticed that some of them, have missed focused, is this due to taking fast shots on the fly in the event? or because the 42MP sensor?
    is it something you noticed?
    All the best,
    Asa

    Didn't Sony invent the XQD card?! Seriously 2 SD cards? It's almost 2018? Silent shooting... Rolling shutter?! Will it get hot in video? Plus if you have an A7Rii and want to upgrade. Who is going to buy it off You? Just my 2 cents . Better battery, and eye detection is all I can see. Well played Sony. 🙄

      Sony invented the XQD, and will use XQD in near future.
      They need to careful about utilizing new form factor cards, since they had lost the race with Memory Stick I & II.
      Sony use Nikon as their Market Tester & Penetrators.

    Just a small question. Has any one tried these new cameras with older lenses - or only with the latest GMasters? Would seek your opinion on older lenses on newer cameras. And newer lenses on older cameras (old meaning some 2years only, not vintage). Or else it’s like re-hauling entire gear. And it’s not coming cheap. Thanks in advance for your invaluable insights.

    Sony would be ok if you had little tiny hands, I need room, plus they just look odd with a big lens on that little tiny camera

      Yeah, looking odd 'cause of a big lense on a small body is a huge disadvantage

    • @ancientfishing
      @ancientfishing Před 6 lety +1

      Pixel shift doesn't even work in most cases because everything has to be absolutely still. Its useless for landscapes and wildlife. Its like Nikon's Focus stacking feature, useless unless everything(did you actually watch the video?) is perfectly still. Also IBIS isn't a huge deal since almost every zoom lens for Nikon has 4-5 stops of Image Stabilization built in to the lens and even with VR most Nikon Lenses are still cheaper than the Sony Counters and there's more options. AR73 is a fine camera but for right now, if I started with nothing, I'd get the Nikon D850 instead of A7R3.

    • @thebadmanreturns
      @thebadmanreturns Před 6 lety +2

      *Wrong*
      Pixelshift very powerful in Still Life Photography, its looks amazing on Pentax K1, in A7Riii even more promising.
      Its almost comparable with 100Mp Medium Format IQ,
      so dont mention the conventional D850. Not in the same class.

    • @ancientfishing
      @ancientfishing Před 6 lety

      Yeah, still life doesn't move. You can also use focus stacking as well that the Nikon D850 has to achieve vastly better sharpness. Its pretty much useless for landscapes, wildlife, insects and stuff that moves, even a little bit. I was really excited about the focus stacking on the Nikon and this pixel shift thing, but as mentioned in the video, its not that useful for most people.

    Not upset about the lack of flip screen?? That was a deal breaker with Canon, we carried on about that as if canon should go out of business based on that alone
