    Lyrics:
    Sam Stone came home,
    To the wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
    Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knees.
But the morhpine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
    Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
    Sam Stone's welcome home
    Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And soon he took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold roared through his veins
    Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
    Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
    Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon,
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair.
Well, he played his last request,
While the room smelled just like death,
With an overdose hovering in the air.
But life had lost it's fun,
There was nothing to be done,
But trade his house that he bought on the GI bill,
    For a flag-draped casket on a local hero's hill.
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
    Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

"There's a hole in Daddy's arm, where all the money goes", probably the most powerful, heartbreaking line in a song I've ever heard, especially after he tells you how "the kids run around wearing other people clothes". God how I miss this truth teller of a man.

Alex Marshall So much appreciation to you for your service, and congratulations for "almost 4 years clean".... That is truly a major victory, especially having the physical issues, too. You deserve to be very proud of yourself, and I so hope you are! One step at a time will become a week, a month, another year. !! "Sam Stone" is hard for so many of us to hear. My son's godfather--a war correspondent in Vietnam--told me recently that he's teaching himself to play it on his guitar. I'm 81 now, in North Carolina, and "Hello in There" is poignant.. But, to me, JP's music & lyrics make every song a unique treasure.

I can't even begin to tell you the stories that I have heard. Please, I ask you as a veteran, think twice before you support another war.

I first heard John Prine on a PBS special in December of 1982. I went to the record store the next day and bought Prime Prine. I brought it home, put it on the turntable, plugged in my earphones, sat in a chair and closed my eyes. When Sam Stone came on, I began to cry. I was 19. And I wept like I'd never wept before.
I'm listening to this song on the night John died. I'm staying up all night listening to his music. I'm drinking beer and I thought I'd be crying into it. But I'm not. I am heartened by a quote of John's I saw on Twitter tonight. He says: "I guess I just process death differently than some folks. Realizing you’re not going to see that person again is always the most difficult part about it. But that feeling settles, and then you are glad you had that person in your life."
No, I'm not crying tonight. I am grateful. I'm glad John hung around long enough to share his music with a whole new generation. And I'm happy he no longer has to suffer.

I feared tricky Dick Nixon would reinstate the draft and re-ignite the war. So I worked hard to be re-classified by my local draft board from 1A status to 4G, "Surviving son of a deceased veteran ineligible for service during peacetime", since all our international conflicts are "conflicts", not "wars" officially declared by Congress. I hoped my new status would keep me from dying via Nixon's fiat. And, my draft number was 41 or 43: too high not to worry. I was totally blown away by his music & am still blown away to this day. Words aren't enough to describe the brilliance, power, & beauty of his songs. Simple, pure, & honest. There is something very special, hard-working and honest about Chicagoans.John Prine carried our city's flag high. Hard to process he is actually gone. It's cool you knew him. I attended HS in West Suburban Conference school also. Music is so timeless and he always seemed like a Bob Dylan-Johnny Cash mashup with almost Frank Zappa lyrics. Proud he left his mark.

@@KevinStott11 Thanks for your reply and mutual admiration of us Chicagoans. So I'll give you something you won't read in John's bio. When we met backstage, I congratulated John for his Grammy and how famous he had become. John told me about a special John Prine appreciation night with his old gymnastics team mates from Proviso East high school, including the coach, and that he was just as proud, maybe prouder, of that as any award or acknowledgement he had received. What made John so special was he never forgot where he came from.

I was privileged enough to see John Prince play before an Arlo Guthrie concert at Robinson Center Auditorium in Little Rock about 30 years ago.
I've got a good friend right now that is MY Sam Stone. It's pain killers and beer trying to fix back pain due to the invasion of Iraq. When you see videos of the first Marines entering Baghdad, that was him. Marine Scouts!!! He's got good friends around him though and he just had back surgery, so fingers crossed and prayers going up🙏🙏🙏

I was born in Muhlenberg County in 1974. My daddy, both grandfathers, and all of my uncles were Peabody coal miners. But it was always this song that made me cry even though I didn't fully understand the significance of the story. Today, at 43 and with a lot more life experience, experienced, my soul is weeps even deeper
