Thank you for posting this Killmayer work. I have been searching for more than ten years for a recording of it. In a composition seminar in the eighties, two then grad students -- John Abrams and Martin Arnold -- kindly made cassette recordings of 20th Century music for us undergrads, and Killmayer's Symphony No. 3 -- amongst works by Cage, Ligeti and others -- was, thankfully, one of them. In my next year of study I was tutored in composition by Rudolf Komorous who once said to me, "It is important to compose music every day, because then the brain begins to make connections ..."

Wundervoll, geistreich und phantasievoll. Killmayer hatte jene Eigenschaften, die den meisten Kollegen fehlen.

Some composers instead of trying to write "effective" music try to write "true" music. Killmayer is one of these.

***** See, now that's what he should have said. Instead, he went for some pontificating bullshit that more or less means nothing. Either way, I THINK he was actually trying to say that it's good. That in itself is a good sign that someone is talking complete nonsense: when they're unintelligible.

+Brakathor Symphonies are not about effect - they are about building a form, and that is a musical truth. Killmayer's symphony is more concerned with truth than effect. Therefore it's good - in the Aristotelian sense.

+Keith Gifford What you're saying may be an esoteric truism (I don't know), but I'm telling you that it's completely meaningless, and it just plain sounds stupid. Music as a whole is an abstract art-form. There IS some scientific basis that certain waves of sound arranged in a particular manner have an objective causal effect on living organisms, but beyond that, music simply exists to be heard. As such, its value can only be based in the effect it has on people. That's really not in any way at odds with saying "Symphonies are about building a form," which is the reason why I think all you're doing is expressing your own subjective reaction in a pretentious way in order to give it more merit than it's worth. Some people build their entire concept of self worth out of doing that: not a healthy thing to do.
