I never want to misrepresent the realities of pursuing a PhD and also, my videos are my own diary of sorts where I share the ups and downs so I can look back on it years from now ♥️ I’m so lucky you all are so wonderful and supportive

@@KaelynGraceApple OMG, thank you so much for being so honest with us. I really appreciate it. I hate these fake CZcamsrs who flex and sugarcoat everything. I'm so glad I found you and your channel. I love the diary style of your videos for your own records or archives to look back on later in reflections and perspective.
Are you in the summer term right now or has the fall term started? What classes are you taking this term?
Do you ever plan on going to Law School or finishing up your degree at Oxford/Cambridge? I mean after Covid ends.

Girlie! On top of everything, PhD student, business owner, everything you do.... please do not worry about that course. Language is hard. And also, you only have so much brain space at one given time. You're fabulous. Do not worry.

Girl, I sympathize sooo much on the being bad at languages thing. I ended up taking Spanish for a full 6 or 7 years in school (HS and college) because I kept having to retake levels and could never test at the level I should’ve been at! It just never clicked for me. I know your pain; you’ve got this!! ❤️

Dear friend don't worry about it!! I'm also doing my PhD at Yale (2y ahead of you!) and this is no big deal at all. I've taken a few "for reading" language courses and wound up needing to take longer courses too to have any real competence :) One option is that you might hop into some undergrad classes this year (which you can do for free, both semesters!) so that you have low-pressure daily practice with the language and I promise you'll start to feel better. As you said, you don't need them to be finished until the end of this year, so if languages are your tough thing go nice and slow and don't put pressure on yourself. We all have our tough things, and there's absolutely zero shame about working around them. And tbh, you'll know the language much better if you take it over a longer period of time!

Can’t express to you enough how much it means to me to know there are others who struggle with the same worries about school and life. As we go through different stages points in our life it’s always an amazing feeling to be going forward and growing but it’s definitely bitter sweet to see the way life keeps moving. Keep going, you’ve got this and remember to treasure your sensitivity because it is without a doubt a gift

Thank you for doing a video like this. I think I can have an unrealistic idea about what grad school will be and this is honestly reassuring. It’s going to be hard and there will be requirements I don’t like (language) and that’s ok. Thank you again and best of luck with the rest of your summer!

I've been learning french for almost two years and I'll have to continue showing proficiency in my grad program. I still struggle even though a lot of english words are actually french. I'll be taking on russian this fall and I'm scared. But as a fellow language learner don't sweat it. Just pace yourself and try to enjoy it. Because the more you enjoy a foreign language it'll get better. Trust me. Thank you for showing us your journey and how it's not perfect.

Failure is still progress, we forget that. To brush up on my 2nd language skill, I listen to audiobooks I’ve already read in my native on 1/2x playback. I’ve always considered getting the hard copy to follow along. But just hearing and trying to imagine the written word helps tremendously and since I know the story, it’s not all new. Good luck friend.

So thankful for your honesty. I've been failing at keeping up my autonomous language studying and it's been hard on my perception of myself. We shouldn't expect constant excellence from ourselves though. Take care of yourself! ❤️

You're doing great!! Languages are just a completely different skills, it's difficult. I'm an online tutor and I know how much a GOOD tutor can really really help you, and mostly make you feel like actually, learning languages is not so difficult. Love your vlogs by the way!!

  • @alexisreve1

The problem with learning a foreign language, speaking as someone multilingual who has also worked as an EFL teacher, is that once you fall behind, you stay behind unless you get extra help. There's no catching up from one exam to the next because everything builds on each other. It's not you! Not sure what this specific course entails, but I'd recommend getting a tutor and/or books like "The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice."

Hello Kaelyn, I am dreading the upcoming courses in either Biblical Greek or Hebrew that I have to complete as part of my Masters of Divinity (Christian Theology) course. Languages are challenging for me too although I speak English and Cantonese. I have had trouble learning to read and write Chinese although my mother is a patient teacher. God bless and I will be praying for your success. Albert.

I know this is from last year, but I had to write that just experienced that! Summer classes are really INSANE. I felt I was anxious and rushing the entire time and that is not a good experience and a good way to learn at all. I finally had the chance to study in the school of my dreams after a long visa process, and I am feeling super upset I was not able to deliver good work.

success is build on failure so its perfectly normal to fail sometimes. You seem like a very successful and accomplished person and I am inspired by watching your videos as I am also contemplating going into studying history. I am in the first year of my STEM degree but my heart is not in it and I started out wanting to do what you are doing but "well meaning " family and friends talked me into something else because of the financial rewards. Its a valuable lesson-you need to have passion for what you study and do because otherwise you have hard time motivating yourself

I had to take a Russian course for my MA's and at the beginning of the semester I knew I would not make it. I asked my prof what were the options, and that most likely I'd drop the class, because I did not wanted to end with a bad note. He advised against it and he did not give me any further advise that would be helpful. I cried so much this past summer semester, because the course was too hard for me and it was too late to drop the class. I did not perform well on the exam and there's nothing I can do about it now, and I am extremely bitter about it. I should have listened to my intuition and just drop that class, but oh well. Long story short, failure is a natural part of our lives and we shouldn't beat ourselfs over it, because it's not worth our mental health 🤷🏻‍♀️

Would you consider going back and taking like an undergrad language class or 2 to boost up? Then you'll understand reading it more later on. I'm getting a MS in international relations and going to take a community College class in Spanish to help myself.
