I actually had a dewalt pocket knife about 3 years ago. I didnt mind it all and the only reason i dont still have it is that the hooligans caught me slacking and I left my truck unlocked one night and they got 2 cheap knives from me.
The positive side of that is that i decided to buy a nice new work knife and really was the catalyst that got me into mid range knives and tools ($100+) where i was on the more budget $10-60 side of things. Thought i was really fancy then with my spring assisted kershaw.

When it comes to folders, it'd best to have a good mid range knife. People who work and use knives are not the same as people who carry to carry, we require more, we put them through more, and a mid range folder will last forever too, and you can buy new springs and parts of you need to.

My wife always ask me why I do it and my reply has been if I lose or damage my work knife (as an aircraft mechanic) it’s not a big deal, if I lose or damaged one of my favorite folders that might cost 3x more I would be really sad 😂 and these budget knives aren’t bad, they’ll do the job for a time and then you can afford to just replace it if you want. My 2 cents anyway. Thanks for sharing!

I'm to understand that most of these makers of "stainless steel" knives are using about a 7cr17 although 5c15 is still in use in some cases. People have a sharpening stone and a pocket knife and want a new knife that sharpens exactly the same as their old one, feels the same on the stone, which is why these steels are popular even though inferior.

$15 for a knife with ball bearings is impressive in itself imo. Now here is my big question for you being you can most likely find a home depot and Walmart in most state's. What would you choose after handling both. The Ozark trail knife or this Dewalt knife?
For me I'd most likely choose the Ozark trail simply because I don't much like liner locks and prefer the ambi lock/Axis lock or even button lock and also I'm not big on partial serrations. I prefer a straight blade drop point even though I like tanto blades also I'd just rather not have the serrations. Now I agree with the Dewalt they are much better then typical smaller serrations it's still just not my style. I feel like for the $10 you get a better knife for temporary use at Walmart over the Dewalt from Home Depot.

Enjoyed your review on this knife! In the pre big box days, you went to your local shops and got very nicely made knives. back in those days I guess the steel was assumed to be ok, stainless was considered great because it would not rust, and that is what people cared about. Then we entered this kind of mass produced age where you get very poorly made knives... I think of these knives with very aggressive detailing, overly serrated blades, big obnoxious thumb studs... Obviously people felt comfortable being able to pick up a blade at the local gas station complex, instead of paying a bit more for a decent blade at a smaller hardware store.
I must say that the whole knife nerd movement, the attributes of various steels, etc sometimes is frustrating to me... I see plenty of stainless knives that are doing just fine, from older times... But alas, the movement has affected quality, and that fact is undeniable... It is also a benefit. Your points about this knife, and how it has obviously been crafted to respond to the dialectic (so to speak) is spot on D!
I just wanted to point out that a Tanto design is always an interesting choice because it is an architecture designed for combat. It gives you a virtual 2-3 inch (depending on proportions) alternative cutting surface (that other line making the triangle tip), this surface follows the contours of the body midline right up to the throat, allowing one to cut this area with a a superficial cut... I mention this only to say, combat architecture for a blade is designed to make it easy for someone to have the blade meet the surface... It is also the reason for many aggressive curves in various blade designs.
yet I see this design used now in many EDC designs and frankly it is not a bad choice! Anyhow this does look decent and I like the bright yellow lol.

My bet on the steel they used is that it will probaly be 5cr15MoV. Lots of DeWalt stuff is made in China and 5cr15 is very widely used in the cheap folders. I also happen to own a DeWalt fixed blade which has a scandi grind on it, and we know that a minimum viable scandi is Mora's 12c27 which is comaparable to the Chinese 5cr15 in my experience. China also buys 12c27 from Sweden and puts it on knives because of it's popularity. So maybe, 12c27 or 5cr15 I wouldn't hope for 8cr13 or 8cr15 but who knows? Recently I've seen reviews of a 10$ D2 folder from Wallmart so... yeah, no one knows for sure.

I'd like this DeWalt for the fact you can open and close with one hand, very useful when you have curious pets around or people not really paying attention. @@Lee-lb9qh depends on the situation. Like a milwalkee fastback is 20$. Sure I could get some dirt cheap one, but those are generally not built for even medium use.
This is sturdier than a utility blade(in that its a real knife blade) and cheaper than good utility blade options.
Now i would probably travel with a good utility blade holder, and just grab a bunch of blades when I get to where Im going. But this is a good fallback if i want a knife knife

A friend of mine gave me a DeWalt knife in 2010. He was so PROUD of it, and the gift gave him great meaning. @ first, I thot it was a good knife, as it was a one-hand open thumb-rowel design. Cute. Nice blade. It began to fall apart by 7th day of EDC. The novel design SUCKED. It was/is irreparable(well, u can jerry-rig it for 5-min use) It is 99% paper-weight now. I doubt they have done any better. F*ckem!
